Conservative vs. liberal Catholic churches nearby
Posted by: Meadowridge99 ()

I live in Great Falls, and I've gone to several different churches. I am a parishioner of St. Stephen the Martyr out in Middleburg, but I like a closer church to go to as well. It seems many of them are more conservative in their values, but I am more of a liberal Catholic. I have gone to:

-St. Stephen the Martyr (Middleburg)
-Christ the Redeemer (Sterling)
-St. Joseph's (Herndon)
-St. Thomas Becket (Reston)
-St. John Neumann (Reston)

Which churches you've been to seem more conservative, and which ones seem more liberal? Stay away from St. Catherine of Siena in Great Falls. I have never been there but they are one of the most conservative Catholic churches in the DC area and their pastor sounds like a jerk from what I've heard.

Just stunned that any Catholic would ask advice on where to find a liberal Catholic church. Why bother to be a "Catholic?" Can't you find a Unitarian church?

this isnt just political, its also things like letting girls be alter servers and how much of the mass is done in latin, there are churches that are more progressive then others. St. Raymonds church disbanded their boy scout troop when gays were allowed in. St. Bernadette, down the street, did not. One is more liberal than the other but that doesnt make it a liberal church.

The Arlington Diocese is known for being on the conservative side. I know some Catholics who attend services in DC or Maryland because churches in Virginia are too conservative for their taste.

The one in Great Falls is very conservative, I've even heard them say the word "nigger" during mass. It's a very conservative church.

From the list, St John Neumann is most lib.

St Raymond's is very conservative.(Springfield)

Nativity Church in Burke is very liberal.

Otherwise, not familiar with churches in the Reston, Herndon, Sterling area.
You probably don't want to drive far...so stay local..

Uber Conservative Catholic is just another Liberal who hates Catholics, and all Christians.

Don't listen to his lies. That's how Liberal work, through lies.

Now, SCOS has its own rules, and you can call them whatever you want, but they're not racist. It's silly for anybody out there to believe the last post, and it's pretended use of the "En Word".

I, myself, choose not to attend that church because I'm a Protestant and feel unwelcome there. I have actually been there numerous times, for marriages and funerals.

But I respect that church.

I do not respect Liberals and their lies.

Prove that the virgin birth or the resurrection ever happened. Absent that, the
Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster has as much claim to your allegiance as any. The more ignorant you are the more fervently you believe what you can't prove.

sorry but I've heard the father say the words "faggotry" and "fudgepackers" more than once during the doxology. maybe not racist, but definitely more conservative than mass in other churches I've visited.

I know the Arlington diocese is known for being more conservative. To me, Christ the Redeeemer in Sterling seems to be more liberal. Not really sure, but I get more of a liberal vibe from that church so far. I meant stay away from the very conservative churches because they are often not very welcoming. I am a church organist, but I don't play for one church all the time. I am in high school, so I am not music director at any church. I've also been to St. Charles Borromeo in Arlington, which is known for being a more liberal church. I've heard Our Lady of Hope in Potomac Falls is also pretty conservative, but I don't think it's as conservative as St. Catherine's. I know some in Reston have transferred from St. Thomas Becket to St. John Neumann, because the latter is more liberal and welcoming. Many people have left St. Catherine's because the pastor there yells and screams and even hit a 10-year-old boy in the face once. He also turns his back to the congregation, something that most churches have not done for decades. You can expect any Catholic church, even if it's not in NVA and if it's known for being more liberal and accepting, to be at least a little conservative. The Catholic Church tends to be more conservative than other Christian denominations.

The greater or lesser doxology? Do you have any idea what that word means? (If you did, you wouldn't have used it in this context.) I call shenanigans.

I don't believe that. Anything a liberal brings up church they try to spin it like they have blacks. So over everyone using black people such as myself to push their new way to HATE if you don't believe the way I do.

If you don't want to follow the bible why are you going to church? Church is for repenting your sins because you love and have faith in GOD! Not the selfish "GOD better change" because "I have", followers!

Liberal Catholics aren't Christian at all. They are performing the rituals, thinking that'll save their own souls.

You see, they don't believe in Jesus.

If they did, they wouldn't be Liberal.

They wouldn't believe in abortion.

Liberal Catholics are self-loathing, misanthropic types. They hate themselves, their church, and their country.

While I am against abortion, at least I get some succor in the fact that only Liberals have abortions. So, those irresponsible parents can't pass their fouled genes onto their offspring.

"Liberal Catholics" are normal Catholics. It's the crazy conservative Archdiocese of Arlington that is out of step with the Pope.

I am reading these post and I am appalled. I am what you call a "liberal catholic" and that never made me less of a catholic because I used my faith to hate on people... I just followed a less "doomsday" cult of the sacraments. I also went to seminary and prepared to take my vows as a catholic nun.
There's always something the professors used to say when I was preparing to teach Cathecism: "faith is one thing, and the church is another. Sometimes, to make the church (the people) have faith, you have to keep fundamentals truths or they won't follow the church".
So, let's just remember Jesus Christ, the reason his apostles created our Roman Catholic Church, dined with sinners, paupers, peppers, prostitutes, single mothers, and tax collectors among others. As a sign of acceptance and tolerance to all. His message was meant to all, not the "self-anointed pious". The Pharisees were always hanging out outside temples an de had scriptures remembered and sometimes written in their clothing, Jesus rejected those who rather talk the talk but not help the people who needed the most.
Jesus ministry was for the poor, the needy, and the lost.
Self righteous assholes not needed.

Do unto others...

Uber Conservative: Saint Raymond's in Springfield. No female alter servers, banned the Boy Scouts, and openly questions our present Pope. And in this weeks bulletin, a movement away from English to Latin only (just a few times a month, but just wait....Fr. DeCelles lives in the 1950's).

This church had the abandoned spic baby someone left outside a couple of years ago.

The parish enjoyed the baby with Fava beans and a nice chianti

Like u said, this poster sounds like she would be more comfortable with a unitarian church h, rather than a Catholic church.

"St. Raymonds church disbanded their boy scout troop when gays were allowed in. St. Bernadette, down the street, did not."

Wouldn't being liberal mean throwing away the Bible? If they condone holding onto sin, what good is the church? You can't be Catholic, Christian, whatever, if you just ignore the Bible. Being gay is a sin, no question about that. Being gay means you are not willing to give up the sin. Doesn't that make you against the church, and not for it?

Or do you like churches that let you treat God like a buffet,

"I'll have two servings of the don't murder, a don't steal, but please hold the don't be gay - I don't like that". Doesn't work like that, it's an all or nothing plate. Either accept all God declares as condemned, or you're just going there to be part of a country club.

Like others said, Unitarian is a very "we don't care about God, just be who you are, and we'll make each other feel good" church.

Our Fr. DeCelles tells it like it is. This week it's a right endorsement in our upcoming school board special election. Soon its Latin now and forever during Mass. If you don't like our return to a pre-Vatican II stance, leave now and worship at one of the Old Keene Mill Road lefties parishes.
