Slavery seems like such a small issue now, compared with the Federal Government takeover of so many parts of local society.

Those who know history know that slavery was on its way out in the 1860s, and the real battle was how much independence each state would have.

Well that's simply not true at all. The southern slave economy was enormously profitable at the time, more profitable than at any other time in US history and one of the most profitable industries on earth. And there were almost 4 million slaves in the U.S. in 1860- more slaves than at any other time in U.S. history.

To say it was "on its way out" is flat out wrong. It was growing in both numbers and dollars, and was defended with increasing furor in the south. Furor so intense that they seceded.

Recall the many, many powerful textile mills throughout the beautiful northern states? They were making millions of dollars back then by tolerating the institution of slavery and converting the raw materials sold them into textiles that were then sold on to Americans and many European nations. Millions, in the 1800s, on the backs of southern slave labor! The British and other nations did the same, turning a blind eye to the "peculiar institution". The Confederacy lost the war. Civil war or not, NO defeated side's flag should continue to be displayed and honored. All it does is help to keep our country divided.

A country which permits the continued display of a flag under which defeated secessionist States rallied, will never allow for its wounds to heal.
