FCPS to consider school name changes in light of Confederate flag controversy?
Posted by: Appalled FCPS Parent ()
Date: June 24, 2015 03:18PM

Seems there's already a push to do so name changes at FCPS facilities based on removing offensive terms, names, or imagery.

These now include:

Jeb Stuart HS

Robert E. Lee HS

Anyone know if this is on the agenda for the next school board meeting?

Are they going to rename all the roads like Lee Highway, Lee Chapel, Lee Jackson, etc.?? What about Leesylvania Park? How about the Lee House at Arlington? How about Washington and Lee University? What about Jefferson Davis Highway (while we're at it)?

Somebody needs to make a list and get started.

I can think of several 100 street names that will need to be changed. NOVA features street names such as:

Black Horse Court (4th VA Cavalry)
Confederate Lane (oops)
Stonewall Road (rebel general)
Longstreet Drive (rebel general)
Jackson Avenue (see Stonewall Road)
Longstreet Court (see Longstreet Avenue)
Traveller Street (rebel general's horse)
Beauregard Avenue (rebel general)
Mosby Street (rebel terrorist)
Mosby Road (see Mosby Street)
Mosby Woods Road (see Mosby Street)
Bartow Place (rebel general)
General Johnston Place (rebel general)
Breckinridge Lane (rebel general)
10th Alabama Way (rebel regiment)
Ewell Street (rebel general)
Ranger Road (rebel terrorist battalion)
Pender Drive (rebel general)
Thomas Brigade Lane (rebel general)
Fields Brigade Road (rebel general)
Early Street (rebel general)
Stuart Court (rebel general)

That's just off the top of my head... a lot of work to be done...

No. It would take more time. It doesn't cost much to lower a flag. You need cash to buy new uniforms.

But you are right that those two schools are the primary focus.

From the Alexandria Patch, 1/28/14

Alexandria City Council approved an ordinance Saturday erasing several outdated and superfluous sections of the city’s code, including a rule that some new city streets bear the names of Confederate military leaders.

The street-naming section dates back to the early 1950s when the city annexed the West End from Fairfax County, essentially doubling its size. Alexandria was known to fly a Confederate flag above City Hall at the time and, according to a 1953 Washington Post article, the naming requirement was aimed at reducing some confusion.

The deleted section required all new streets running in a north-south direction to, “insofar as possible,” bear the names of Confederate military leaders. The change also erased a requirement that new east-west streets bear the names of persons or places prominent in American history.

City resident Dino Drudi spoke in general opposition to the change, saying naming streets after historic figures has importance.

“The sense of what is obsolete is very subjective,” he said. “I find naming streets after prominent persons does help me with wayfinding. … The name matters. It means something. ‘Oh yes, Beauregard is this guy from the civil war, this famous person’… or something that you might have studied in history or might get talked about because its important, you might remember.”

Councilman Justin Wilson, who drafted the ordinance, said the city does a good job bringing historical context to the naming of new roadways. He specifically cited the new development at Potomac Yard, which has incorporated the names of historic railroad lines and other elements dating back to the area’s time as a huge rail hub.

“Looking into this, the staff has done a pretty good job when we’ve had new developments of working with the Office of Historic Alexandria and coming up… with names that are historically important to the area, people and places,” Wilson said. “I think we do a very good job of that. This doesn’t change that at all.”

Let's not leave Lanier Middle school off the list of school named after Confederate heros. Sydney Lanier was the official poet of the Confederacy and Jefferson Davis was his bestman at his wedding.

If current parents and students want to change the name of other schools besides Stuart and Lee, they should have the right to express that view.

It's a given that FFXU is full of basement-dwelling racists, but most of them, for all their stupidity and lack of ambition, didn't have to attend schools knowing that they were named after people who fought to keep their ancestors enslaved.

A full review of all schools needs to be done. Obvious one's like Mosby Woods Elementary need to be renamed - but associations must also be weeded out. For example, Ravensworth Elementary needs to be renamed because - face it - Ravensworth was a slave-holding plantation owned by white southern slavers like the Fitzhugh's, Lee's and Custis'.

This may be true. However the timing of flushing "city code" drivel, making it news, while attacks on the rebel flag are in the news.

Is highly impertinent and shows their willingness to attack civilians who are fond of the rebel, that thay are "above it all" and offering foreigner chances to attack natural citizens - yes - even the long residens since the county had a flag.

In my life time I have heard a lot of derogatory comments against blacks, but I have never heard of any derogatory comments against blacks that included any connection to the confederacy and or the confederate flag. This is about destroying heritage. And the blacks are too sensitive. The blacks can use the N word, but a white person can not. And the Native American (Indians) had it much worse than the blacks. And so did the Jews in Germany. Seems to me that there is a hidden agenda to destroy America. To get different races feuding. To divide and conquer. To divide Blacks, Whites, Hispanics and Muslims etc. That this is a small piece in a many year plan (30 to 50 year plan) to destroy America. We have lost our manufacturing capacity, they are trying to take away our guns, no Christmas in school, no pledge of allegiances in school and now the stage is getting set for there to be race wars on many fronts. And Obama had fueled the race war fire with his comments on cases in regards to the police shootings of blacks. And Obama is a Muslim. I saw the Youtube video where he said he was Muslim. I do not consider myself a raciest. I wanted Colin Powell for president. But with Obama and what ever is happening with the black movement against the white establishment. This movement against the confederacy is out of control.

Well, I must adjust my rant. On this site there is the post of a Klansman with the confederate flag in the back ground by (Come and take it N*****). OK, this is the first time I have ever seen the confederate flag used with a racist comment. Totally inappropriate and not helping the cause. The cause should be to allow more freedoms, not restrict freedoms. If the majority is OK with Christmas in school and Christmas on government property then it should be OK. If the majority is OK with the confederacy then is should be OK. If those who fly the confederate flag do not have racist intent then those who are offended should keep their mouths shut and not whine. This PC where the few who are offended rule over the majority. It's B.S.

Then we can have Lesbian Lane, Transsexual Turnpike, Bisexual Boulevard, and Homosexual Highway, or, if you prefer, Gay Gardens.

And, they'll be lining up at Contractor Concourse to make some money off the whole mess that is FCPS.

I am off a little bit and slow. So excuse me for making adjustments. I guess the point is: That we should not cave in and change names to satisfy the few who are offended. I saw on TV this morning that a high school mascot is the midgets. That a group of midgets and dwarfs are trying to get the name changed because it is offensive. The mascot name midgets came from around (1930?) due to their basket ball team. That their team was shorter than the other school teams yet they were very competitive. No one would choose a derogatory name for their team. Like the Washington Redskins. To all of us fans the Redskins name is not derogatory. I am white and my name is Barry. Some (including my self) would find it offensive to be associated to the name of Marion Barry. Maybe I need to change my name.

High schools were named for notable Virginians, Civil War generals, Statesmen and US Army General George Marshall, Medal of Honor recipient James W Robinson who went to Annandale HS. WT Woodson Supt Fairfax County Schools. And the Areas they were in Fairfax, Annandale, hayfield Oakton Herndon.

Jr.High Now Middle Schools were named for poets Joyce Kilmer, Lanier, Frost,

Elementary Schools were first named for the community or features in the area. Little Run, Camelot, Mantua, Quander Road . Later some were named for People of Note Drew Smith, James Lee, Scott Crossfield.

Richmond had nothing to do with it. Many Americans who have fought for this country did so with high respect for the Generals and men in Gray of the Civil
War. And carried that respect and devotion to their duty in their hearts in battle.

I just cant see Bruce Jenner, Hillary, Obama, or any of the current Libs energizing ANYONE in the military about to go into combat.

And Fairfax County was once a three way split. Either you were in the Military, worked for the Government or were in private industry. Fairfax County did and has supported the defense of this country a long time.

No name Changes are needed or should be changed.

Students Urge J.E.B. Stuart H.S. Name Change

July 8, 2015 7:32 PM2 Comments

By FCNP.com

An online petition signed by 338 people as of Wednesday morning is urging Mason District School Board member Sandy Evans to spearhead a name change for the J.E.B. Stuart High School in the Sleepy Hollow section of greater Falls Church. J.E.B. Stuart was a prominent Confederate general during the Civil War, and the petitioners contend that when the high school named for him was built in the 1950s, citizens deliberately chose the name of Confederate soldiers as a means of protest against court orders to racially integrate the schools. “The use of Confederate names was used to intimidate and shame black students,” the petition states.

In the wake of the murder of nine black members of an historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, moves have been swift to remove images of the Confederate flag throughout the south, and the J.E.B. Stuart petition is in that spirit. It includes a list of schools around the U.S. where name changes have occurred out of sensitivity for racial equality. Rising Stuart senior Anna Rowan has spearheaded this petition effort.

In addition to J.E.B. Stuart, the petition calls for the removal of all Confederate-related school names in Fairfax County.

I'm sure they'll push for something suitable like Mumia HS or Trayvon Martin HS.

How many schools are named after Benedict Arnold? He certainly matches confederates' bona fides as a traitor...

Proving once again that history is written by the winners. Arnold would have been a hero if Britain had won. The southern generals and leaders would also be heros if the South had won. But Britain and South lost. Thus, traitors, not heros. True history doesn't care about partisan rewrites.

They're not going to rename just pretend the "Lee" name was for some other Lee or Jackson like Chinese philosopher Soo Fung "Lee" or actor Samuel L."Jackson".h

Hindsight is 20/20. Slavery is the worst thing to happen to the US. Why? Because now we have to deal with these pavement apes.

Figure out how to spend more money and raise taxes, import more illegal aliens,
more civil rights for pedophiles, and shove more political correctness up everybody's ass. BTW, white people suck and Jihadi's are misunderstood.

I am going to term my position as pro-confederacy. I think it wrong and a disgrace to try and rewrite our history and or destroy our history. That the movement to rename the high schools is a disgrace to our history. And I am a Northerner. My ancestors fought on the Union side. We should remember and embrace all aspects of our history. But I think it a bigger disgrace to display strong anti black rhetoric that includes a hangman's noose and to connect it to the confederate flag. (Come Take it N*****)'s post is very bothersome, and just plain wrong. It will cause the community to loose respect for all that are in the pro-confederacy camp. I ask that those who are in the pro-confederacy camp to condemn and separate your self's from (Come Take It N*****). To condemn his post and reaffirm you position is a respectful way.

"South" is offensive. All state's DOTs need to change exit signs using that offensive word and change it to "not north".

Compass manufacturers need to re-tool so that no "S" is on the compass face - replaced by NN.

The CIA needs to get rid of that offense compass rose referring to the offensive direction.

Not North Dakota.

Not North Carolina.

Traffic reports about not northbound I 95 during rush hour need to be fixed immediately.

Please sign David Chagon's petition against the name changes See link at end.

This move to change the name of Jeb Stewart High, Robert E Lee High and W T Woodson Schools is being spearheaded by the book writer Lisa McQuail. She is a white democrat for whatever that is worth. It plays up Fairfax County as being very racist in the 50's and 60's. The petition mentions that in the 1990's, 23 schools in New Orleans were renamed, many or most for black people. Quote from McQuail's petition "We have launched a well-funded Facebook campaign. You can be assured that national groups such as the NAACP and Black Lives Matter will be standing with us." People on Social There is concern that this will progress to renaming many streets like Jeff Davis Highway. This is a serious and strong movement. If this issue is important to you then please sign and help spread the word.

As of 9:00 AM July 12th, McQuail's petition to change names has 747 signers where as David Chagon's petition against the name change only has 568 signers.

Fairfax High School is a double winner.

Lord Fairfax, big time slave owner and oppressor.
The Rebels. Can't get worse than that.

Or can we?

How about changing Robert E Lee to Freddie Brown School or Gentle Mike Brown High School?
It would help recognize important blacks in our society, and their contributions.
Instead of Lee Lancers, you would have the Fred Grey Niggers or the Mike Brown Niggers.

That's not their mindset. If you don't want to be associated with the name of Marion Barry, everyone else needs to change. You don't need to be inconvenienced. Confederate leaders were just that...leaders.

With that information maybe we should change the name of Fairfax County... and this website lest we continue to honor the name of a slave holder.

If the school board doesn't act and reverse and correct this outrage maybe a class action lawsuit would be best.

I am scarred thanks to these names of racists imposed upon us by racists.
