Well, I just learned something new. Had never heard of such a thing. I had to Google it.
What do you like about that kind of a system?

Maybe you should move into the 21st century bud.

A natural gas A/C? That just sounds fucked up.

Anyone have a ballpark estimate on a new gas system for a ~2500 SqFt 2 level home?

This is new construction pending, getting my numbers together!!! Already have my solar quotes and picked that out.... :)

ammonia ...

Flash point flammable gas
Autoignition
temperature
651 °C (1,204 °F; 924 K)
Explosive limits 15–28%

natural gas boilers - steam danger, and heat source for igniting ammonia

"i'd put it indoors, next to my mother in-laws room, to keep it clean"

-----------------------

probably you want to insure your unit is repairable if it needs maintenance - that might become a problem if you get a custom technology install - be it good or wrong

efficiency well. figure the btu (as measured by you being in a room with it - not beleiving a fucking thing for the label or ads)

and compare the trouble of it all with the $bill. check to see if it's made and serviced in The USA by your good neighbors not some foreigner who's trying to bankrupt america

then ask your horse is your right - and hurry up there's not allot of sun left to decide

I had to call them, they were my only option. They got me going for about 300 bucks. I love gas air conditioners. Back in the 60s and 70s most people in this area got their A/C from washington gas and light. You could even borrow the money to have one put in and make payments on your gas bill. The electric company simply did not have the infrastructure to cool us. I have a sump pump back up battery rigged to my gas A/C and my unit will cool for 6 or 7 hours if the power goes out, I love that!

Uhm no.

The technology of absorption refrigeration has been used for cooling purposes for over a hundred years now.

Gas refrigerators and freezers require no electricity but not so for air conditioners, you still have two fan motors to run. Gas A/C was very common in this area in the 1970s. It was often the only option in the suburbs because of limits on electric infrastructure at that time. Washington gas even serviced, sold and financed them back then.

Gerry is factually correct. Rural folks used gas refrigeration units ages ago. I worked on 2 of the a/c units for a client 30 years ago. It uses flame from flammable gas to change gaseous ammonia back to a liquid state instead of an modern electric motor driven compressor using freon. I finally talked her into replacing the units because the system od tubes holding the sealed system of ammonia was deteriorating. I didn't want a large quantity of raw ammonia leaking out hand hurting some one. The system sent only cooled water into the a frame in the house.

How does one use a flame (to heat gas, it seems) to convert gaseous ammonia to a liquid state. which connotes a much cooler, rather than hotter, temperature?

Not saying that the laws of thermodynamics precludes such a system from operating, just questioning the description provided in the below post.

Look at a phase diagram for ammonia.

Using partial pressure, you can boil the ammonia on the indoor side (and remove heat) and on the outdoor side (at high pressure) condense the gaseous ammonia to liquid. Use heat to create the higher pressures for the condenser.

That's the expansion valves in the diagram above. It separates/controls the pressure regions.

I think #2 on the diagram is an attempt to cool the superheat region.

Yes, his name was Dan and he knew the Arkla Servell units inside and out. I need my A/S unit winterized shortly but there seems to be only one guy that will come all the way from Woodstock Virginia to do it. If anyone knows a good absorption man in the area please let us know Thanks!

If you do the conversion math Gas A-C's have about a 6 seer. Do yourself a favor and get a electric system 14 seer or better.

What century did you bring gas air conditioners from? Today, completely different ones are relevant, for example, you can buy modern and high-quality air conditioners here https://www.nationalairwarehouse.com/. Thanks to a rich selection, you will be able to choose for yourself a certain type of air conditioner that will not torment you with the smell of gas (I remember how much trouble I had six years ago from gas conditioners, it is a real hell). Time is changing and there are new versions of air conditioners

So, to summarize:

The electric company sucked in the 60s and 70s, so you had to get a gas powered ac, and still sucks because you need to back up your gas powered AC for those long duration power outages that same sucky electric company has.

Ahh, good old Virginia Power. Only electric company I know of that can have a 4-hour outage in perfectly clear weather.

The mayor has since sold MIFCO and isn't running again. I guess that's the end of his political career.

I don't think anyone will miss Hal Parrish. He proved what a little bitch he is when he ran for Colgan's old seat.

Virginia Electric Power Company, aka VEPCO, got the nickname Very Expensive Power Company for a reason.

And those rates are only going to go up, if you've been paying any attention to what they've been up to.

Gas air conditioners are good for folks living at the edge of the grid. Propane can be trucked in and provide a shit-ton of cooling where minimal electric is available.

I read somewhere that they are dangerous and can burn. I'm not sure that it is exactly the same model. I'd recommend you for your safety to look for the Best Air Cooler in India because you have to understand which brand do you need and how long will you use it. Also, the freezer is very important because if it will work bad you won't be able to keep different types of meat there and I think this will be a real problem. Soon I'm going to buy a Liebherr I can't wait already. I know that this is the best refrigerator in the world.

If you still use a gas a-c Washington gas will send a sub-contractor to your house and you can even pay for the service over time on your gas bill.
