Hollywood month hits FCPS
Posted by: FCPS MOMMY ()
Date: June 03, 2015 09:44PM

My 6th grade son, learned today that he can go ******.com and free (iLLEGAL MOVIES). Today he was in recess for one hour. and Watched two movies. and attending specials. so really he stop learning. I emailed the Teacher and CC the Principal and Assistant Principal about this issue no respond yet. Why is FCPS starting Movie week earlier and earlier? Why is it that after passing the sol they stop learning? They can't learn anything new?

This has been going on for at least a decade, June is basically a playground until school lets out . That's why I laugh when I hear complaining about not enough instructional time.

It's true that there is not enough instructional time between September and the May SOL window established by the state. We should be sending our students to school earlier in August and then releasing students as soon as the SOL is over. Or, if we insist on maintaining our antiquated school calendar, the state should push the SOLs further into June. In the early NCLB days, they said we had to do them in May because they needed time to get the results out. Now with computerized testing, that simply is a lie. We get our results in 24 hours.

What is equally true is that most students simply quit working once the tests are over. Teachers who try to keep going face much resistance. I sympathize with your argument, but I also know what it's like to deal with the masses. They're lazy in general. In June, they are beyond lazy.

Fish rots from the head. Blaming the kids for the disgrace that June is in FCPS is pretty ballsy. On Monday my daughter went to Kings Dominion and completed some BS 'physics of Kings Domnion' assignment on the bus home so it counted as educational. Teachers have become brazen in their contempt for students and anything approaching a professional learning environment.

I have a major assignment due tomorrow, June 5. I will get back to you on how many students actually show up with it complete. I can tell you with certainty that I have about a 50% completion rate on most other assignments prior to this one assigned for June. I suspect the completion rate on this one will be no better and will probably be much worse.

Fish does rot from the head -- the heads of the families in Fairfax County.

I literally stop teaching after the SOLs. It's movies & pizza parties in my class from here until June 19th. Finals are over too, btw I'll enjoy collecting my glorified babysitter check at the end of this month.

After the new health curriculum swings into motion, the kids can enjoy Robin Williams movie specials in Health Class; like cross-dressing Mrs. Doubtfire and Gay agenda "Bird Cage".

FCPS schedules SOLs in the latest window allowed by the state. Yet the state won't let us start school earlier. SOLs should be like finals, since they are supposed to cover everything learned in a school year (or two). Or, if we all started opting out of SOLs (which you can do until HS - when they are mandatory for graduation), maybe the state would start paying attention because a lot of fed money would disappear.

The elementary school teachers have a lot of things to do by June 19, per the principal's directions for end of year checkout. When is that supposed to get done when we still have kids all day? So we put on a movie so we can work. I don't think it is okay, but there are only so many hours in a day and I can't possibly get it all done at school. I do many hours of the paperwork at home - am just about to fire up my laptop so I can do my report cards and evaluation data at home on my own time, taking away from my family.

Don't ask how many hours these teacher evaluations have taken this year. An incredible amount, if you are curious.

This year we have students in class until 1:30 on the last day of school, unlike previous years where the kids showed up for two hours. So I can't get much done that day. We are also told not to pack up the room ahead of time, so when it is supposed to be done? Yes, I am coming in the following Monday, but one day of packing is not enough.

There are no specials on the last day of school in my elementary school, at least, so those teachers get a day of cleaning and packing for art, music, and PE, but not the classroom teachers.

It is not just the SOLs that have to be done early. The elementary DRAs - the reading tests - had to be done by May 29 at my school, although there were several weeks of school after that. This is because the state wants them then, and the school data team can have time to "analyze" the results (don't get me started on that).

However, I do not feel that it is okay to show movies all day. When my daughter was in high school I did not understand why that was happening. She could have been doing much more productive things.

In my class, we are making end of year books, doing science experiments, doing a unit on a country that is not in the SOL, etc. I enjoy the end of the year when I can teach what is fun and interesting to kids, and sparks their interest, rather than being bound to the pacing guide.

But, it all comes down to leadership. The parents need to complain, the principals need to say "No movies" and the teachers need to submit lesson plans that show they have something worthwhile planned.

And yes, the younger kids should be opted out of SOLs so that they can really do hands on projects and not be stressed about test scores.

my kid watched during the school day year round in elementary school, sometimes 3 times a day, other teachers couldn't do anything about it because she was not white. kid took money to school, teacher found it, used it for her sodas, told her it was his allowance, she didn't care. why would I want to pay more taxes to give her a raise? when kids left toys at school, she told them she gave them to her daughter.

Oh, so it's a busy time at work, and you need to spend some time at home getting caught up? Yeah, that NEVER happens to anyone else. Except they can't put a movie on at the hospital/police department/office/etc and stop doing their job.

The public school teaching "profession" has become a joke.

Oh stop about our salaries. You could have been a teacher too. And for the record, we do not work only 9 months. Everyone knows that with technology being 24/7, we get harrasssed, on the regular, by kids and parents at all hours, wanting to know stupid SH1T like, what did I get on that 4 point homework assignment or when can I make up the test that I missed due to my unexcused absense. We work all but 12 weeks out of the school year and even during that time off, attend trainings, meetings, and prepare for the next year, so F off!

Here's your summary 'cause I know you didn't get it from the first few replies:

ONCE YOUR CHILD PASSES THE SOL, then it's over. Go complain to someone that gives a FCUK and dont ask me what your child's final grade is.

At Laurel Ridge we were told via email that on the last day of school, June 19, they will start showing movies at 9:15 in the cafeteria, to continue through lunch (which the kids are going to eat on the floor, seated on beach towels from home) and then they dismiss at 1:45. Good luck getting a kindergartener to sit that long doing anything. This is so the teachers can pack their rooms. They have a stack of movies ready. I have never shown a whole Disney movie all the way through in my classroom. I can't wait to drop off my kids and go pack my room and see how that turns out. I have not spoken to single teacher yet that thinks this is a good idea. We did not ask for it. We are astonished at the idea, and would have thought it was against the rules.

I am all ready for the kids to pass out at Field Day tomorrow in ninety degree heat. The new adminstrators have no planning abilities.

You all are clueless. The state test window goes until June 26. The schools are required to identify a 3-4 week window of time within the state's test window during which they will administer their SOLs. If your school is finishing SOLs in May, that's an issue to take up with your school. The school I work at is still administering SOLs this week. Next week (the last week of school) is for administering finals and wrapping up the school year.

It's really not a complicated concept. If you move up the school year four weeks so that it ends in May, then you're also moving up the SOLs. It will have exactly ZERO impact on the amount of instructional time prior to the tests.

Good Lord, you people really have no clue.

Grading deadlines are established by the administration -- starting with central office that trickles down into the school. Grades are due tomorrow, Wednesday. We then get a verification sheet on Thursday. Corrections and final export happens by noon on Friday. All this happens so the data people can print and mail home your child's completely inflated report card within the week -- because God forbid if you don't get them immediately. That would just give you bastards something else to complain about, wouldn't it?

Teachers are NOT even contracted to work next week, except for Monday, when we again are ordered by administration to have our classrooms packed up and cleaned up by 11:00 am. Starting on Tuesday, we begin our UNPAID furlough.

When the hell else do you think we're going to get our grades done and classrooms packed if we don't do it while also babysitting your kids who are completely berserk and checked out by now?

I am absolutely certain that the students who are the biggest pains in the ass are the children of the parents on Fairfax Underground.

Sorry about your "unpaid furlough". I have to admit that is a creative term indeed. I'm guessing that the "furlough" was not part of the contract when you started teaching?. I would love to see year round school just to listen to the whining of having to work during the summer. I actually find it offensive that you have the opportunity to make extra money during your furlough if you so desire when you have already made the salary that many people make but put in 12 month a year to get it. Teachers are their own worst PR enemies.

+1. FCPS and the teachers that inhabit it are pretty much DMV or USPS level government employees. Just like the cars and the mail, the kids will always be there, there is no competition or accountability, and they cannot be fired unless they commit a (serious) crime.

Very true, even then it is a fight to get rid of them. Several teachers at my kids high school liked to do group projects, independent study or in one case show family and travel photos for most of the semester. Thanks to those slugs my kids had a few challenges to work through in college. The slogan should be, Teacher for life in FCPS , no matter how ineffective you are.

And you think the parents on FFXU are winning the public relations war? HA!

I'm not complaining one bit about the job I have to do, the job I signed up to do with full knowledge of what I was getting into, the job I actually love because I get to make a difference everyday in somebody else's life.

What I'm complaining about are people like you. I honestly just don't get some people's downright obsession with bashing teachers. It's not even logical.

Here are the facts -- facts that pretty much apply to any job -- jobs that I don't bash or harbor any grudges towards:

1. Teachers do not create the work calendar. Why bitch about teachers having time off when they have no control over the days they do or do not work? Do you have any control over your work schedule? Probably not. Do you hear me commenting on the hours you work? NO because I don't give a fuck. Why do you give a fuck about mine?

And while we're at it, you-who-know-nothing-about-me should know that I am the biggest advocate of year-round school BECAUSE IT'S GOOD FOR STUDENTS. Your dipshit kids start every September having lost about 30% of any gains they made the year before because you parents let them sit around IN FRONT OF THE TV all day long, or on their phones snap chatting nude photos of themselves, or sleeping until 2:00 in the afternoon. Hell, I ask my students how many of them even have chores at home, or eat meals at a table with their families, or read books for pleasure. Next to none! When all parents start pulling their weight during July and August (never mind September-June), you can then criticize me for trying to get my grades done by a deadline in June with a movie on. Given what some of my students openly report about their parents, I'm sure I'm doing a much better job than their parents are at caring for them. At least the movies I show are appropriately rated, compared to some of the filth they report being allowed to watch at home.

2. Teachers do not (and cannot in this right-to-work state) negotiate their salaries. Why bitch about teachers making a certain salary that they have no control over? Everyone in this economy is struggling. We completely understand that because we deal everyday with students whose families share their struggles. We believe all workers should be making more, not just us. When we gasp at our .6 percent cost of living adjustment, we're not asking to be singled out as deserving more than everyone else. If you're gasping at your own lack of financial advancement at your place of employment, I support you. But if you're sitting back and thanking your boss for _not_ giving you a raise, I scratch my head. Who does that? Do you go home after not getting a raise and tell the people in your community how awesome that was to get turned down for your raise?

So to all you government contractors out there, gas station attendants, restaurant managers, dog groomers . . . whatever you do for a living: I hope you like your job as much as I like mine. I hope you are rewarded for what you are worth. I hope you get all the time off you need or want.

If not, if I ever hear you complain about your job, don't worry. There will be no judgment from me. I will never sit around in my life bitching through an online thread about my ungrateful hairdresser who gets better haircuts than me but still complain about her tips, or the truck driver who gets to see a part of the country that I don't get to see but constantly complains about his back problems.

You see, I'm not envious of anybody else's working conditions. We all have our shit that we deal with in our jobs. Get over it. Get a life. Spend time with your kids. Spend time at your kids' schools. Get to know your kids' teachers. Volunteer to help with a class project. You will find that after spending just one day behind the scenes as an adult in charge of 130 kids that you really do know NOTHING about what a teacher's job entails, anymore than I would claim to know what a veterinarian's job is like.

That's what I'm sick of -- the smug arrogance of people who think they know everything but really know nothing -- but also the absolutely illogical nature of the rants against teachers on FFXU and in this country as a whole. It's preposterous because it's just so stupid.

I hope you have a wonderful summer, and I hope you enjoy your next family outting at the movie theatre. I hear Jurassic Park is amazing.

Thank you! That's exactly right. Some parents who can't even watch one kid all summer have no clue what it would be like to watch 30 kids a day every hour and half, 7 days a week. No clue. It's NOT the same as sitting in an office at a desk and working with adults. NO clue!

WRONG AGAIN, you-who-know-nothing-about-me. I decided very early in my career that I would NEVER bring your child's papers into my home. Why ruin my mood, my relationships, and my health spending any time outside of my job reading the crap your kid produces? The only way I've managed to keep loving them is to keep it all at school. I recommend it to any teacher who shares their burn out stories with me.

Now let me ask you . . . Really, at 7:35 in the morning, you are on Fairfax Underground? Again, since you are so fucking obsessed with how I spend my time, answer me. You get on FFXU as soon as your kids get on the school bus? Now that is pathetic.

And please allow me to grade your writing at 5:03 in the afternoon . . . F on sentence structure. F on apostrophes.

Bye, Movie Mommies. Good luck changing the world on this cesspit of a forum. I'm done here.
