Local dealerships received their "lay off" letter from Chrysler, with further instructions as to stock liquidation and service contracts to be provide in mid June.
Slice and Dice Ford if you like, but Ford was the only one that didn't go to the Bail Out Buffet Table. I'm proud to be a Ford owner. As soon as they make a hybrid small truck, I'll be at the dealership with my check in hand.
The only reason Ford didn't take a bailout is because they have been able to maintain sufficient liquidity thanks to 23 billion dollars in private borrowing in late 2006.
They put up ALL their assets, right down to the blue oval, as collateral.
They are still losing billions every quarter and when that loan money is gone, you can bet your ass they'll belly up to the Bail Out Buffet Table. However, if the economy picks up soon....they may pull it off.
But after how I got fucked on a new Ford F-150 in 1993 (5 trannies in 80K miles)....you couldn't give me a fucking Ford.
Speaking of dealers closing, this is just the beginning....GM is pulling the plug on Saturn, Pontiac, and Hummer. How many stores do those brands have around here?
They are also going to close LOTS of dealers of the surviving brands...I think I read 2600 of them nationwide. Unfortunately, the biggest, most dishonest of them will probably live to swindle another day.
They've had too many dealers for years...6200. Toyota, which sells almost as many cars has 1800 dealers in the US. The problem with closing dealers is that it's expensive....many states have tough franchise laws to protect dealers. But when GM files for bankruptcy in June...they can dump all the dealers they want without paying them millions.

Good riddance. There are too many American car dealerships. The Big Three inherited all these mom & pop outfits over the decades as they acquired brands. This culling is about four decades overdue.
Nope, Farrish is not on the list. And Fair Oaks Chrysler/Jeep is not on the list, though its literal next-door-neighbor Ourisman Chrysler/Dodge is on the list.
Make a Fucking car that doesnt burn 2 gallons to the mile, lose transmissions every 23000 fucking miles, Leak oil all over everything and power steering fluid within the first 40,000 miles of its life, and maybe people would buy aMERICAN CARS. $54,000 dollars for the Mercury Marauder????? Its a FUCKING 4 DOOR SEDAN for Shits sake. For guys being paid in excess of 85 dollars an hour on the factory line I expect much better than what I have seen. I worked at Lustine Dodge for 3 years and Lindsay Chevrolet for 8 and some of the shit that came through the shop was pure JUNK!!! Fucking embarassing!!!
This is all part of the "it's going to get worse before it gets better" part of this recession. I imagine lots of mechanics will be a impacted....these are our neighbors and friends...very sad.

A lot of this has to do with all the bullshit dealership contracts these automakers have had over the years. Instead of building a really good Camry or a really good Accord, GM uses the same frame and parts to build shitty Chevys, Pontiacs, Buicks, Saturns, etc, to meet their stupid contractual obligations. Lots of shit out there to satisfy the demands of dealers who can't sell.

I wonder if the Moore Cadillac/Hummer on route 50 will get the boot... right now they're building a nice brick perimeter around the lake in front of the buildings

The Hummer part for sure....GM is getting rid of that, Pontiac, and Saturn.
I don't see how GM can dump these dealers without filing bankruptcy first, as Chrysler did. State laws that protect franchise holders are most easily voided by bankruptcy. It cost GM a billion dollars to shut down Oldsmobile...most of that to pay off the dealers.
Shutdown can equal non-renewal of a franchise agreement. I doubt bankruptcy would be a requirement for a company to decline to renew a franchise agreement.

How is the national company helped if there is no real financial dependance and the local dealers are independently fiananced?

But, that dealership is like brand new... anyone think that another GM model could go into that store in it's place?

In the case of GM, they are cutting brands, so it will be less expense sticking Pontiac and Saturn features on a Chevy to pacify those dealerships. As for Chrysler, I imagine there are still heavy costs associated with servicing these dealerships, even if the dealers offset some of those costs of shipping, etc. The company probably employs or contracts out tons of drivers and trucks to get cars to dealerships in BFE. If Chrysler passed on the real costs associated with delivering these vehicles, the dealerships would have been out of business a long time ago.
Tubby has it right. The franchise protections in the Commonwealth of Virginia are among the strongest in the nation. GM has to clear very high statutory hurdles to demonstrate cause for not renewing a dealers Sales and Service Agreement. That said, the real importance of these notices that GM sent is that it likely identifies tha dealers that it will target once they are in bankruptcy. Once there, GM is no longer bound by its' contracts with dealers, and dealers are no longer afforded protection under state laws. This is what happened to those 17 Chrysler branded dealers in our area. These are dark days in our industry. But it all has been a long time coming. There are way too many domestic dealers in this and most metropolitan areas.

Probably not.
Moore Cadillac is in very good shape financially.

GM is probably figuring these dealerships don't have the money to fight them in court. If they manage to get some momentum, GM can drop back into Chapter 11 and fuck them over a second time.

I wonder who the bondholders thought was going to buy GM and Chrysler's assets if they were allowed to be liquidated.
