My carry piece is a .38 Special revolver. Always ready to shoot, never unloaded.

1. Most of the time, no; some of the time, yes. No single condition is always right. The risk/reward profile is dynamic, and accidents do happen. Further, external safeties and retention on holsters (or lack thereof) play a role. So, too, does one's firearms handling and carrying aptitude.

2. No. But again, consider your own circumstances.

1. Not usually.

2. Take mag out, but don't empty the mag. I switch mags every couple weeks so as not to run the spring.

1.)I Always do, but your situation depends upon your weapon and level of comfort in doing so.

2.) I place mine in a small gun safe at night

This. If you're going to carry, carry. What's the point in wandering around with a gun you can't shoot?

Honestly, I mostly don't carry these days - too tricky with babies. Can barely manage the huge effing diaper bag.

I'm a lady so I bought a cute handbag that locks. At night or at home, everything is locked up. If you are worried about getting to your stuff, get a safe with fast access. Gunvault makes nice ones. I have a few and the speed vaults are excellent.

Yes, the shots let my family know I'm home.

What other people do is irrelevant. If you're coming here for advice you shouldn't be carrying.

Emptying the chamber of a pistol every day is a bad idea. If you buy a holster designed for your model of gun it should be virtually impossible for the gun to fire. (Rigid holster that fully covers the trigger area.) Talking the gun out of the holster and pulling the slide to unload and then reload just increases the chance for a negligent discharge. It also could lead to a setback and overpressure problem if you keep re-chambering the same round.

CC what is the point? If you shoot a perp, there will be roits, and the police will hang your ass out in the wind to save their own asses.

Look at the situation in Baltimore, and remember Black Lives Matter above anything else - Including the law.

Depends on a couple of things:

1) Sometimes I carry a Glock which doesn't have a thumb safety. When carrying it, I don't have one in the chamber.
2) Sometimes I drink while carrying. See #1
3) When carrying my 1911, I feel safe with one in the chamber because of the thumb safety.
4) I don't carry the 1911 while drinking (leave it in the car) because it has a bigger profile than the Glock and I don't want concealed carry exposure in a bar or any place nonetheless.
5) Really all depends on how comfortable you are with the piece.

You should always carry your defensive handgun with one in the chamber. If you aren't comfortable doing so you need to change something so you are comfortable. In an emergency there probably won't be enough time to rack the slide. The police always carry with one in the chamber for a reason and most times they're carrying glocks too. If you are using a proper holster in good condition and keep your finger off the trigger, the gun won't fire itself, ever.

> 2) Sometimes I drink while carrying. See #1

It's illegal in Virginia to be intoxicated and conceal carry. Even just having alcohol on your breath may be enough to arrest you. Just like with drunk in public, there is no breathalizer required for the police to say you were too impaired to be carrying.

> 3) When carrying my 1911, I feel safe with one in

No gun will fire unless you pull the trigger, safety or not. You student let a safety give you a false sense of security and you should always practice keeping your finger off the trigger until ready.

It's illegal to conceal carry and drink ANY amount of alcohol in an establishment that has an ABC liquor license in Virginia

> 5) Really all depends on how comfortable you are
> with the piece.

You should be comfortable enough with any piece you carry to at least carry with one in the chamber.

Not really true. A gun without some form of firing pin block or disconnect can fire if dropped, etc. Even when not cocked if the striker is hit it can fire. Many used to. That's why they started making the pin/hammer blocks. Most modern guns will not but some still can.

No problem with the rest.

The round in the chamber question was a big deal during the Zimmerman trial by the asshole prosecutor . How else will the gun fire? And all revolvers have rounds in the "chamber(s) if there loaded. If its a .Colt .45 single action some carried the 6th chamber empty and set it under the hammer to avoid a discharge by hitting the hammer. Todays firearms have safety's to avoid that'

As far as unloading goes the least an loaded firearm is handled the better. The CCW laws that require removing the firearm don't help anyone. A loaded gun carried should be treated like a sleeping dog, leave it be. In a holster leave it be. And be careful when you disarm and watch the muzzle always. Most firearm accidents occur with disarming clearing the chamber then letting the dog sleep in a safe place where kids and others wont touch it as in a gun safe or other lock box or if a revolver putting a hand cuff around the frame with the cylinder swung out so it cant close and fire. If careful you wont screw anything up. Autos are a bit harder to safe as they require jacking the slide ejecting the chambered round after removing the magazine.

Yes to a point on hitting the hammer on dropping the gun. You never know.

1) Yes one in the chamber for two reasons:

You should always have your firearm in a holster that covers the trigger. With a good modern weapon, it's next to impossible for it to go off without the trigger pulled. Keeping it in your pocket or tucked somewhere with the trigger not covered is asking for a negligent discharge.

In the tragic circumstance you might need to draw, in most scenarios you will a) have very little time to do so, and b) not be focused on proper draw procedure. Most CCW's therefore prefer not just one in the chamber, but no safety at all on their carry gun. That way there's no chance you might forget to turn the safety off in the heat of the moment.

(Personally I like the peace of mind in having a safety though)

I'd definitely recommend training drawing from your holster and firing at a range (avoid Blue Ridge Arsenal and check with whichever range that it's okay to do drills drawing for a holster). Remember the phrase, "most people don't rise to occasion, but fall back to their level of training".

2) Definitely leave it loaded in a safe. Leaving a gun laying around is asking for your kids or visiting kids to find it, or to be stolen during a break in. See also: https://www.reddit.com/r/nova/comments/3cj31i/protect_your_house_its_home_break_in_season/

I leave it loaded so that a) if I need it at home it's ready to go, and b) I'm more likely to carry it somewhere if there's less hassle.

Id like to add that there's no need to unload a full magazine at the end of the day. Keeping a magazine loaded indefinitely will not shorten the life of the spring inside. The only time I unload my magazines are at the range while firing or for cleaning the internals of the magazine once in a while.

Chambered, but safety engaged.

It goes on one of my many quick draw gun magnets in places around the house.

When I go places where I cannot carry, it's in a lockable steel box in the vehicle.

If I am drinking for the night, it stays home.

Oh, also read up on the Tueller Drill. Basically it takes an attacker only 1.5 seconds to run 21 feet from a stop. So if an attacker is already in that 21ft and you wait for them to "come at you" before drawing, you have less than 1.5 seconds to draw, aim, and fire. That leaves no time for racking the slide back.

> Sergeant Dennis Tueller, of the Salt Lake City, Utah Police Department wondered how quickly an attacker with a knife could cover 21 feet (6.4 m), so he timed volunteers as they raced to stab the target. He determined that it could be done in 1.5 seconds.

^^^
And that's why police depts. practice shooting at the 7 yard line 21 feet for the exact above reason. As well as even closer and farther.

In the case of the DC Metro 4th of July Stabber, Even if he had been shot at 6 feet away he could have lunged and cut before he died unless it was a head shot. And if the bullets penetrated him others could have been shot also. A bad situation all the way around.

If some one has a knife and a cop tells them to drop it and they make any kind of move after, their gone.

Although I enjoy around-the-clock protection by dozens of heavily armed guards, I don't think anyone else should have the right to armed defense. After all, we wouldn't want one of my sons to get hurt while robbing and raping you!
