Jet Skiing On The Potomac

Aside from the obvious limitation of the Falls, are there any legal restrictions on where one may jet ski below the Falls?

The legal restriction is a 6 mph speed limit starting at Memorial Bridge.

And Metropolitan Police Harbor Branch WILL be there to enforce it.

Let me reiterate what the above guy said. The Potomac River above Memorial is reserved for canoeing, rowing, and paddle boarding. Other vessels are allowed as long as they DO NOT THROW A WAKE. People would be injured or killed if jet skiers were allowed to be the nuisance that they always are.

So, keep your childish jet ski horseshit below the bridge! Believe me, harbor patrol has boats that you can NOT outrun!

The potomac above the falls is open but gets real shallow in spots. The area around Georgetown is no wake on the potomac all the way to the falls.

You can jet ski be the airport and south of it with exception of the American Legion bridge area.

One of the cop boats has two 150hp outboards on the back. Thats good for 70-80mph at least. They blew past me once at full speed (fire up near fletchers boathouse) - extremely fast!

There are four police patrol boats in the DC area of the Potomac. They are always sitting near Fletcher boat house and Georgetown checking boats.

There's a mile long No wake zone 6mph along Old Town Alexandria to the Woodrow Wilson bridge.National Harbor has a 6 mph speed limit in the harbor area but not the main river. Belle Haven Marina has the same round the marina, Colonial Beach ditto in the close in area . From 100 yards past the Woodrow Wilson bridge south, you can let it rip all the way down to Norfolk as long as you stay in the main channel

I used to have a 65 footer with twin 12-cylinder Detroits. That boat threw a wicked wake and she drew jet skiers wanting to jump my wake like moths to a flame. The old school jet skis that you stood up on were usually no match for my wake unless they were really good riders.

One day, about ten of them took off after me. I fiddled with the throttles and tabs to maximize the wake (easily 8-10 feet) and I got 'em all! They went right over the handlebars!

When the sit-down PWCs came out, I would only get one every now and then. Not worth the wasted diesel fuel to create a really big wake.

Not sure why anyone would want to jetski in the shit-filled Potomac. Not to mention too choppy and shallow trees everywhere that will fuck you up really bad if you hit one.

Lake Anna is a far better choice.

The Potomac is a nasty cesspool. I think your skin falls off if you get any Potomac water on you.

Sounds like the AMOS the hugh sportfisherman that used to be on the Potomac .It threw a huge wake and the Wee Ski people were always looking for it. AMOS American Maritime Officers society, they lobbed congress on the boat with lavish trips on the river.

I have launched at both Pohick Bay and Algonkian Park. Late in the season the hydrilla (or whatever it is called) grows too thick and clogs the jet - so you're out in the more open waters.

I haven't yet been to Lake Anna. I hear you can launch near Reagan airport.

Gravelly Point. You can only get to it driving northbound on the GW Pkwy. Head straight out to the middle of the river with your vessel and have fun. Slow it down by Old Town.

The parking lot gets insanely crowded on the weekends, so get there early.

DC harbor patrol boats are fast but theyre klunky as hell. cant maneuver for shit. I was tubing under the wilson bridge with my buddy when those fuckers pulled up swinging the boat hook. I spun around in my innertube and headed for the va shore. I could hear him cussing as he jammed it in reverse to avoid the pylons. did the okey doke on him at least four times and finished my steel reserve before i touched bottom in VA. unfortunately he had hooked my pal so i couldnt just leave. went to court for "harbor swimming and diving" and the prosecutor laughed and tore it up. poor harbor master grooms went purple!
