World Police and Fire Games

Fairfax County is hosting the Games this year. They run from June 23 through July 6. I am only learning about this now. Are these games attending/supporting?

Don't forget to check out the new event this year, the John Geer simulator. How many kill shots can they get on an unarmed citizen standing in a doorway?

A new event this year is the Taser shooting gallery! But don't press your luck, because a dead inmate earns no prize.

And then there's the classic football pick 'em where you can settle up your bet with a well-aimed shot to the aorta.

How much will these games cost Fairfax taxpayers? It seems like an ego booster for Sharon Bulova. She's still mad about the failure of the trolley and the meals tax.

She says it will be good for businesses, but which ones? Certainly the average taxpayer gets nothing out of these games. You'd think, with the county and schools crying about money, they'd think twice before wasting money on something like this.

Oh well, Bulova's out of office this year anyway, after voting herself a raise for doing nothing.

Well I'm not a smart man, but with all the athletes coming from around the world as well as spectators, that should make the local businesses boom. They all have to sleep, eat, and I'm assuming sight see. I see this as a good thing as far as money intake is concerned. But again maybe I'm wrong. But common sense tells me that money will be made by the county as well as businesses.

Good points. Sounds like a win-win. I would bet any public money spent in this will be recouped in hotel taxes, etc. I have heard the hotels are packed. The restaurants will make a fortune. You would think they would charge an admission fee.

Show me what the county spent on these games, then show me the revenue. I don't own a hotel or restaurant. I sure hope I am not spending even one dollar for this event.

But... those hotels and restaurants will be paying taxes to the county on the income earned. The wage workers and tip earners will have more money to spend in the county, and so on.

Oh great, so you, Mr. Non-Economist, are suggesting that the rank and file residents support hotels and restaurants? Maybe the way to go would have been to have them pool money to fund these games. Let them take some risk to get some gain.

As it is, the rest of us are just stuck with it.

well I am voting against Bulova and Gross anyway. Enough of them and their stupid policies.

Why do we feel the county is spending any money on this? The majority of the events are at places that are built. We don't need to build a water area, we already have one we don't need any fields or rinks, we already have those. We don't need any buildings with stairs for the fire games, we already have those. The "workers" are mainly volunteers so no money there. I'm not seeing where money is being spent. I'm sure some money will be spent on salaries of county workers to work the games, but we ALREADY pay them. I'm don't get it. Am I mossng something?

Thank you Fireman Bill, the last I heard the figure was at 5M. Wow so they are going under a million a month. Glad Fairfax can afford to take it in the rear. Don't look for a pay raise next year brotha. Stay low

That 5M probably doesn't include the extra positions and promotions the fire and police dept's have made.

Can't have a regular officer of fireman work at the games....has to be a white shirt in charge. A white shirt making six figures.

Not all costs are financial. I have been told that fields that are usually rented out by the county are not available for rent this year because they are being used for the Games. I have also been told that at least one Farmers Market is being impacted because of the Games, and that local law enforcement may be required to provide motorcade duties to permit those participating in the Games to travel to and from events in a timely manner.

I heard they are going to use school buses to transport the athletes, so driver pay needs to be added to the costs.

Also wrecker fees because school buses (if my kid's is any example) break down constantly. Even if the athletes make it to their venue, they'll probably be asphyxiated en route by the fumes those wheezing clunkers belch inside and out.

No chance they can get the venues to give the space for free.
They aren't charging for admission, and I'm not sure why anyone local or worldwide would attend any of the events.
The participants have to pay their way here.
They are looking for handouts left and rights. It is downright pathetic.
No chance they get that many volunteers, since you have to be willing to stand in one spot for 8 hours and not move. Good lord, who wrote the descriptions. They aren't paying for any positions. Zero.
No chance those sponsors listed paid for their listings with a straight cash sponsorship. Trade sure maybe.

Ha..you are funny. If the Greer thing had happened in Brazil it would have gone down more like this...IF the cops even showed up.

First they would have asked the woman what her problem was and why she was bothering them while they were napping in the afternoon. They would have asked her to pay their fee for showing up. They would have told greer to knock the shit off. The moment he showed them that he had a gun, they would fired a volley of machine gun fire into the house and then dragged his dead body out the front door. The fine cops would have then killed all the witnesses and claimed everybody died in a gang shoot out. All would have been over in 20 minutes or less.

Yeah...those great cops in Brazil are such great guys. I love them

there is no such thing as World Police and if they stick their dick in the USA they will be arrested

That's called "safety in our community"

A program which firefighters canvass neighborhoods with smoke alarms and safety info. They offer to check and replace smoke detectors and batteries. For free.

The smoke detectors were free to residents as part of a grant

The firefighters are being paid whether they are there giving you free smoke detectors, or if they're sitting on their asses in the firehouse.

This program has already proven to save several lives, money, and property in the county already.

I know someone who went around the bend with the County over this. Fire Dep't came out, offered smoke detector. They tried three of the ultra cheap ones they carry around, not one could be made to work.

Fire Dep't apparently reported this to Code Enforcement. Code Enforcement 1st said they would provide a working detector then backed down on that. Person went to HD and bought one. For some reason, this did not satisfy Code Enforcement, they took the person to court. They took the detector off their own ceiling, with pictures to prove it. When the Code people said the HD detector was no good, the person hit the test switch. It worked, made a lot of noise. Judge was not happy, but less happy County would prosecute the guy who spent his own money on a detector.

This grant is a waste of money, just like most of County's initiatives.

Yes, that is quite a shock because I know of no companies in this area that pay you to do volunteer work.

Go stuck in one of those fucking motorcades at Braddock and FCP today. Thanks assholes.

You probably work for a shitty company. Many tech companies, including mine, offer PTO for volunteer work. We get 16 hours annually and employees are encouraged to use this along with 120 hours of vacation PTO. If you don't take at least 40 hours of vacation every six months you are more or less forced to spend time away from the office and the turn off your e-mail so that you don't do work on the side. This creates an incredible work environment with no guilt when you decide to go away for a few days.

How much is this costing the taxpayers again? Money down the drain to stroke politicians' egos. Nice.

I still say those companies are few and far between.

Let's see 16 hours of "Volunteer leave" equals actually getting paid, unless they consider it LWOP without effect on your work record. I'm going with door #1 Monty. 16 hours of "paid Volunteer Leave". Don't come whining when the County demands higher taxes

I can't read this without tearing up...

our mascot character, Captain Courage, who is a valiant Eagle coming to cheer on the all of the athletes featured in the Games. According to the story, Captain Courage grew up always wanting to serve and protect the citizens of the United States since he was a baby Eaglet. Even though he was told by his fellow Eagles that his impact would be unnoticeable, he took on both the roles of a Police Officer & Firefighter and humbly served his local community. Today we have the rare chance to see him soar with his fellow firefighters and law enforcement officials as the animated face of our Games.

Sharon Bulova needs to publicize the cost of these games. Why is tax money being spent on them? Did County residents ask for them? Was it put on the ballot?

NO, Bulova and her cronies just up and decided to do it. That is so typical of Fairfax, making decisions with no input from residents. It is the same thinking that will double taxes to pay for more consultants for the schools as well as the transgender gyms and bathrooms.

Is that a joke? That's they gayest thing I've ever heard of.
