It's territorial and when they are up close and personal with another fox on their turf. They do that first to try to avoid a fight.

First time I heard it I thought some woman was being attacked. I remember hesitating, standing there listening and wondering what I should do. But then I realized the noise was coming at a steady interval which meant it was more than likely and animal than someone being attacked. I've heard it a couple of more times since then. I don't recall really ever hearing it much before this year so I'm wondering if that means the fox population is rapidly expanding.

It sounds like someone is being gutted. I felt bad for them because they were doing it in the dead of winter when it was like 0 degrees outside. I thought they were dying or something.

Foxes bark. They do not "scream". It sounds similar to a small dog barking.
You city folks are hilarious.

We've been hearing some sustained howlings coming from the woods behind our house ever since the weather started warming up. at first we thought it might be a wounded animal but our neighbor became very alarmed one night when a strange whistling noise from off in the distance seemed to get closer and closer until she could hear it coming from her very own front porch. Very chilling. whatever it is its growing bolder.

Wow, I swore off this website and I'm glad I came back. I live in Fairfax City, I've heard very spooky intense screams several times coming from a distance. They are always at around 2 - 3 in the morning. The last time it sounded exactly like a woman being tortured at first. It made me wonder if Fairfax has some Ariel Castro somewhere. Awful noise.

Maybe it is a woman being tortured, you should probably walk back in the woods and check it out.

The freakiest one of all are barred owls when they scream.

They don't always do the hoot along with it. Just the loud rising scream part that will scare the shit out of you at night in the yard. lol We've had one in the woods behind us for years and it still gets me every now and then.

Might sound scary, but they are not very aggressive around humans. Pets might be another story.

fox are like owl they mimic their prey's (mating call?) in such a manner the prey are distracted or even come out to take a look (owl, mouse)

they are known to mimic cats and dogs at times

unless it's a mating call or a moon call - that's a screetch
