Summer Jobs/Good Jobs for Recent College Grads

Does anyone have any tips on a good summer job for a recent college grad to get into in the nova area? Maybe one that pays well or has something fun/easy to do.

Sure! Try your local Army recruiter. They can have you in the ranks of the
employed in record time.

What's your background, any identifying qualifications?

Fun/easy to do - be a lifeguard

Pays well - doctor/lawyer/management

Not trying to be an ass here, but, if you are out of college and got your degree, why are you looking for a "easy" summer-type job?

PM Vince(1) and ask him to hook you up with his Hispanic lawn-mowing crew. Its easy and fun to do.

Be sure to knock on all the doors and ask for tips too.

Search for Summer Intern Positions with well known firms.

They are short term (2-3 months) and usually don't pay that well, but look fantastic on a resume.

AND ... if you do well during the internship, the company may hire you.

====

The Government is also hiring college grads. Again, the pay isn't that great, but the jobs are secure and the benefits are there.

Good luck

Some of those company internships include some nice benefits as well. Definitely a good place to start, plus that'll get you networking in your field even if you don't want to stay in this area after the summer.

I used to have a project where I'd bring in an intern every summer, basically to suck up extra budget money and help around the office. While it was good resume experience for the people, and certainly better than retail or construction, they pretty much did all the office grunt work nobody else wanted to do. Monotonous data entry, scanning documents all day, organizing files, etc. There's no way I'd want some intern-type job if I had a degree in-hand. And taking a summer off so you can wait tables and party with your friends, that just creates a hole on your resume- one that is very visible when you're first starting out.

You're right about intern work it is rather shitty work...though as you noted it is good resume experience. I do disagree with you on the summer off bit. Often times travelling about and learning (yes via partying) about other cultures is a life-affirming right of passage especially for kids in Europe/Australia. I would highly recommend going out and about for a few months and I wouldn't think at all that it reflects poorly on a resume that you didn't get a job right away after graduating. Tis easier to do it after finishing school than when you start settling down/getting jobs etc.

Travelling to another part of the world for a summer would be an excellent experience. I wish I had done something like that after college.

But, taking an easy summer job in FFX county so you can goof off for a few months, that just strikes me as irresponsible (I know people who have done it).

If you have at least 60 hours of college credit, sub teach in FCPS. Prince William Schools don't even require that.

There are many schools which need subs during the summer. Some even start in early to mid August.

Go to www.fcps.edu and follow the prompts.

If you get approved to sub, then take the bus driver training program which lasts about four weeks. You get paid to take the classes, earn $16.75 hourly for forty hours, acquire a Commercial Driver's License, and then tell the fine folks at FCPS that you have reconsidered the wisdom of driving a school bus.

You will not be the first.

Thats actually not a bad idea for how to get a CDL and get paid. Wonder how FCPS feels about it

i have a background in political science. I have done nothing but labor jobs in the past, so far, and was a college athlete. Looking for a job that i can use as a placeholder or stepping stone to get to my career, maybe law enforcement or security or something.

As I indicated earlier, apply to sub teach.

While you are waiting to get approved, obtain CDL manual at DMV.

Study CDL manual and acquire CDL learner's permit.

After you have been accepted as a sub, apply to be in bus driver training program.

Obtain CDL in bus driver training program. Training is PAID. That's right.

You get paid to get the CDL rather than pay a company for the training.

Upon obtaining CDL, drive for FCPS while looking around for something else.

I know drivers who would drive in the morning, sub during the day and drive in the afternoon. There are also evening classes at Falls Church High and Pimmit Alternative in which one can sub.

Dennis Houlihan, former FCPS assistant principal, used to drive in the morning and sub as an administrator before returning to work.

He was a great bus driver and administrator.
