I'd say Shoppers would be cheaper, but never try Harris Teeter unless you're from the newer LoCo neighborhoods/Arlington yuppie.

Depends on what you're buying and what's on sale wherever that week, coupons used, etc. That's been shown in almost every equivalent shopping basket comparison. Other than on some particular things that I buy at one or the other I don't see much difference. Not like you're typically going to save 20% just going in and buying random stuff. A bigger difference will be in buying store brands or stuff that's on sale. Giant and Safeway you need to sign up for their cards otherwise you'll pay more than you have to for all of their sale items.

Giant fuckin sucks, it's too expensive. Go to Aldi, much cheaper, but bring your own bags.

Shoppers is the cheapest, but their meat and produce are iffy sometimes. If you are buying canned and packaged shit, they win.

Seafood
Giant : Good seafood
Shoppers Beware. I have had as much bad there as good.

Meat
Giant Good
Shoppers the same

Veggies
Giant Good
Shoppers the same but a wider variety.

Canned or Ready to cook foods Frozen
Same

Treats: Shoppers has a huge donut selection, bagels ect, Hot food bar
Giant not as wide a selection. More expensive

Salad Bar
Giant Food wins hands down theirs is the best in the area
Shoppers Ok

Both stores have aisles packed with things to buy.

Giant has some things on sale but you need their Bogus Card, No stinking cards at Shoppers.

Check Out Less time at Shoppers Giant has many self serve checkouts but few with people .

Giant and Shoppers are my main stores in Nova and Food Lion when I get to one #3

Um, no. Giant's seafood is mediocre at best. OTOH, I wouldn't buy seafood at Shopper's.

Both are OK at best. Shopper's has a wider selection, with stuff like chorizo and random turkey parts (good for soup).

Both have OK produce. Shopper's tends to have cheaper prices on it.

True.

"ect"? Oh, "etc." -- that'd be short for "et cetera". Never "ect" -- that's short for electroconvulsive therapy. OTOH, maybe that's what you meant.

I'd agree with that.

How unusual in...you know...a store.

Heh, I like "Bogus Card"!

Shoppers' self-serve checkouts are the sanest in the area. If you know what you're doing, you can really fly. Every other store that I've been in has something stupid that slows you down.

> Giant and Shoppers are my main stores in Nova and

Wegman's for most stuff, including meat/seafood when I can't get to Whole Foods; then Whole Foods (for seafood and meat--it really is better, but of course pricier), then Giant (because it's near), then Shopper's, then Hairless Tweeter, then Food Lion if you're desperate.

Of course geography plays a large part here, though I'd drive fairly far to get to a Wegman's.

If you do shop at Shoppers, check the expiration dates on all products. I've been burned several times on different types of items.

One thing that burns me is that both Giant and Shoppers either never carried or discontinued a lot of different products per store. It's like they plan it out to give each grocery store the edge on specific items. My imagination or not??

Shoppers is cheaper though giant can sometimes win if it's a good sale.

Safeway is nice, I like the Vienna one the best.

I'll second Wegman's. Great prices, great selection, almost never long lines. The only problem is it's way out in Fairfax. I live in Annandale so it's a trek, but I usually make it out there every 10 days or so.

As for Shopper's vs Giant; Shopper's wins. Harris Teeter is okay, but I usually only buy things I need that are on sale that week. Otherwise their prices can be high.

Giant's seafood sucks. They wash their fish, shrimp, and scallops in a water+bleach solution (this keeps the fishy smell down when it starts to turn) to keep it in the case longer. The Burke Shopper's Seafood is in the same case as the deli meats and the deli workers also get you the seafood. For that reason, I won't buy either at Shopper's.

Since Giant has gone to precut meats packaged in PA, the meats suck now. Good luck getting a special cutter, thicker steaks, etc. Giant's meat cutters in PA don't know how to properly cut a strip steak. I saw a package with a least 2 inches of fat on the top side and a tail that was 2 inches X 3 inches of nothing but fat.

In anticipation of the new Wegman's in ALex, Wegman's just has a significant price increase at the DC area stores on their fresh cut in store meat, strips steaks there are now $11.99 (up from $9.99) per pound and never go on sale.

Safeway now offers USDA Choice and still has in-house butchers that will provide special cuts (provided their not on the union mandated 20 minute break per hour).

You could go to some of the butchers that have stores in the area (Springfield Buthcer, Meat House in Fairfax) if you really want good quality meat!

I work at Giant but I get my meat from Safeway. Since Giant has gone to precut the quality has gotten worse. We dumped a lot of material because 1) the people they use to don't know about "facing" and trimming, 2) the shrink wrap process uses too much heat which promotes bacteria. For some reason, I see a LOT of chuck roasts with green sores, which might be from injections which didn't heal or tumors.
Giant's solution is to use darker wrap on the Angus and the Nature's Promise so you really can't see what's inside the package and they raised the price.

Safeway, on the other hand, sees this as an opportunity to get customers from Giant. They cut daily, it looks fresher, and they will custom cut. I've found the family packs are cheaper than Giant also. With Giant, you have to wait at least 2 days for them to get a special order.

Just shop at Wegmans, it's actually cheaper than both and much higher in produce and meat quality. Just stay away from the food bars, bakery. Excellent products but too expensive for poor people.

Shoppers have cheap but questionable produce with gnats and are from countries that douse everything in pesticide and you will get cancer later from eating. IMHO not worth the discount.

The only purpose for Shoppers is for the donuts. But even they vary in quality store to store.

Just curious -- how does "In anticipation of the new Wegman's" lead to a price increase?
