We used to collect a lot of bottles on Telegraph Rd. 2 cents a piece at the time, LOL. The jackpot was finding a big glass milk bottle (1/2 gallon?). I think they were 10 cents a piece.

They weren't typically all you can eat. Though I suppose you could have just kept asking the waitress to bring and charge you for another order. They were very good of course. Almost universally praised. These days, Sea-Pak makes a very reasonable substitute that you can bake up at home in 20 minutes or so,

If you were to order some Heinz India Relish off the internet, you'd have the key ingredient in making the perfect tartar sauce to go with the clams. Others would be mayonnaise of course (maybe three tablespoons worth), just enough lime juice to add some tang (3/4 of a teaspoon-ish), a bunch of dried minced onion and crushed dried parsley, just a dash of garlic powder, and a couple of quick shakes of Season-All. Make the sauce while the clams are baking so the flavors have time to meld.

And that tartar sauce plus a couple of generous squirts of ketchup gets you the perfect 'secret sauce' for burgers and cold-cut sandwiches too. Yum!

Haha! That was the old black balloon man from down on the mall. He did a standard station-ID read to add to it and became an on-air regular. Those were the days of the real HFS-tival -- when it was out at Lake Fairfax. Amazing!

Before liberals from up north overran this area in the early part of this century they overran it in the sixties and early seventies. Before the current wave of immigrants broke on our shores there was another wave that hit after the Vietnam War ended.

Now democrats have turned it into a police state where criminals and illegal aliens are treated better than the citizens. The government hates anyone who wants to see our constituition enforced.

Then there was the place where the center in Kingston is now that was the same.
At the 3 way intersection of Beula Rd back then and The road that passed Allen Glass Co at the power lines down to Telegraph that's still there at the end of Hayfield HS football field at the light today .

There was a country type store there sitting on big gravel lot , nothing else around they and the same tub of ice cold beers and sandwiches too..

I could not partake, while on duty but they looked dammed good and got a sandwich some tater or mac salad from the deli cooler and a soda

Putting 6 packs of canned beer for sale in a tub of ice water is a serious health code violation. People put their filthy hands in there and spread disease, even death. Any stores caught doing that today would be shut down.

Sure do . . . Hi Gear Fairfax City (). Purchased some stuff there. But Fairfax Auto Parts and Track Auto just took over the market. Some History:

DATED: April 15, 1997

Nearly 40 years after it began selling auto parts to car tinkerers, Hi-Gear Auto Tire and Auto Supply Inc. of Capitol Heights yesterday announced it is liquidating and closing its 36 stores.
Hi-Gear filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last September, but was unable to reorganize because of intense industry competition, an auto parts market battered by the increased use of computer components in cars and an aging population. The chain's problems were exacerbated by a mild winter, company executives said.
"It's been soft for everybody and, of course, the competition that we face is from huge publicly funded companies, which we're not," said Stan Love, senior vice president of the chain.
At its peak in 1995, Hi-Gear had 65 stores in the mid-Atlantic region, but closed 29 outlets last year in an effort to reduce costs and streamline operations. The majority of its remaining outlets are in the Washington-Baltimore area.
Going-out-of-business sales at Hi-Gear stores started Sunday, Love said. Although the company's 200 or so employees will lose their jobs after the liquidation, "many have been solicited by other companies" in the auto parts business, he said.
Analysts said Hi-Gear's woes are shared by many in the auto parts industry, but that medium-size chains such as Hi-Gear suffered in particular because they are not small enough to be niche players and not big enough to wield influence with suppliers.
"The biggest ones are getting bigger -- and that would include AutoZone, Pep Boys and Sears -- and the small ones are finding it more and more difficult to compete because they don't have the buying leverage, the economies of scale and the relationships with the supplier that the big ones do," said Beth A. Richard, a specialty retail analyst with Everen Securities in Chicago.

"The middle is a bad place to be," Love said.
The retail auto parts business has softened recently because of changes in the automobile business, according to industry experts, and the changes have been particularly hard on small chains such as Hi-Gear that cater to individual car owners.
As cars become increasingly computerized, experts said, it's more difficult for the average person to fix things that go wrong with their cars. And with cars containing a larger number of more complex parts, retailers must stock more supplies, which is costly and more difficult to manage. For small chains, that cost can be overwhelming.
The growing popularity of leasing cars also has affected auto parts retailers because many of those cars are covered by warranties for the length of the lease. That means people take their cars to the shop rather than lift the hood themselves.

In addition, as the population ages, people are less likely to work on their cars, which benefits auto companies such as Pep Boys that have service bays as well as retail parts stores.
"More and more people want to get their cars fixed for them rather than fixing them themselves," said Richard, the financial analyst. The service side of the auto business, she said, is growing quickly, hampered only by a shortage of skilled technicians.
The final nail in the coffin for Hi-Gear, Love said, was recent mild weather, which kept the chain from meeting sales objectives it had set during bankruptcy proceedings.
"One of the huge problems we had was this was a very, very bad winter for us, because there was no cold weather," Love said.
People usually buy batteries, antifreeze and windshield wiper blades in winter, he said, but not this year. "A lot of things that take place in cars, take place in extremes of weather," he said.

Back in the 80s I when I came back to Fairfax I felt at home when I saw Mexicans working on their cars in the parking lot in Annandale, just like they did in California at Pep Boys but the JIB was gone alas ! And today I can still get that feeling when I go by Pep Boys as their still replacing brakes in the parking lot there , all jokes aside some very strong tough Latino people as Ive seen them hustling working on vehicles on road sides on impossible jobs but they get it done DAJAX Wonder if it will pass state inspection ?? Yes, and you could get them for breakfast. Why don't most Mexican places deep fry their burritos today?

Listening to WEEL during a late night snowstorm on a transistor radio until they announced school closings. Will always remember the blizzard of '66 when they announced that Fairfax County schools would be closed indefinitely!

I've been here since 1961, and in the 70s people were starting to get a little alarmed. I pick 1983 as the year it all went to shit based on the growth and development rate: that's when it started skyrocketing,

The last 20 years is just shit-icing on the already baked turd cake.

Agree. That's about right. Early 80s was the start of the huge influx of outsiders.

I call it the St Elmo's Fire Effect. That movie was an infomercial for career opportunities in the DC area.
