Inspection

Anyone know a good place to go for a quick inspection and pass? And I do mean somewhere that's not nit-picky. My driver's side door window thingy is broken and it costs a fortune to fix.

yes there's 1,000,000 auto repair websites online for free

and buying the right tool for the job "made in USA" tool from Sears to do the job right is cheaper than dealer cost - has been for ages

next time do not hold the up/down button nor let your frienemy passenger do so

it burns out the motor, cars have no protection and windows that can sever your arm. less recalls that way

I burned out a window motor a few years ago. I found a Latino auto shop in Hyattsville that replaced the motor pretty cheaply.

they are famous for fucking over customer AND the parent companies, continually stealing

they unplug the window motor or leave it in a manner it will unplug itself after a few door slams

you go back to get it fixed: the fuckers plug it back in and bill you for a repair and parts

that's not in somewhere USA that's here in fx co VA

If you REALLY need to fix it, save your money people.

www.car-part.com for quality Junkyard parts to search online

For an actual physical junkyard- i tend to go to Brandywine in MD as they have the largest selection and can get the part that day 99% of the time! I do drive a common car) http://www.brandywineparts.com/

If you must have brand new parts, www.rockauto.com is VERY good on pricing (compare to advance or autozone or napa! Just gotta be willing to wait 2 days for shipping, most stores will order it and make you wait anyway unless its something simple like brake pads or spark plugs)....

TL;DR
www.car-part.com
http://www.brandywineparts.com/
www.rockauto.com

DONT GO TO THE DEALER!!!

Window regulators are expensive to have fixed but not bad if you do them yourself. With the internet its not that big a deal. A pain in the ass yes but not impossible. I had a 93 town car that ate regulators every 10 months. First time I had to drill out the rivets. After that it was mostly fussing inside the door to wriggle out the old broken regs and wiggle the new ones in. Sucked but cost 100 bucks each time vs. 500 bucks each time if a mechanic did them. Helped me earn my Shadetree chops yo...

If your power windows work or not isn't something they check for on inspections.

Sometimes its easy. My Volvo V70 had a window drop out halfway and when I opened the door did a little research found all I had to do was replace 2 small plastic rollers - easy. Didnt have to remove the regulator or window. Just like this SAAB video

Yes it is, I didn't get 10 steps before the guy called me back and said it's an instant fail if the drivers window does not work.

Think about if you got pulled over how unsafe an officer would feel if you opened your door right away etc.

The drivers window must work...the others aren't in the inspection except for the glass being intact.

Go in on a hot day when they are busy. and have the windows down. Find a station with white employees and you should be good.

My window motor has a thermal circuit breaker. My vehicle is a 1999 GM -- nothing exotic.

Window motors fail because they are rotating parts. Repair is usually a bit tedious since these things seem to be installed before the door is assembled.
