Virginia School Board Member Compares Transgender Rights To Desegregation Amid Chaotic Meeting [VIDEO]

During a raucous, crowded meeting of vocal parents and transgender activists Thursday night, Fairfax County School Board in Virginia touted that adding “gender identity” to the county’s non-discrimination policy would make the county “a leader on civil rights issues” and likened the transgender policy change to the fight fought over desegregation.

“Friends, 50 years later we’re fighting the same battles that our fore bearers fought to provide equal access to our facilities for all of our students. The push for protections based on gender identity is the civil rights issue of our day,” Fairfax County School Board member Ryan McElveen said at the school board meeting.

Moving out of Fairfax principally due to the schools. Kids would have gone to Oakton but I'm moving into the District and committing to sending my kids to private schools. Fairfax in general and FCPS in particular have gone to shit.

Shame, I would have loved to vote against this douche, but I'm so glad to be getting out. To everyone else, I suggest moving out while you can. You are one article from Jay Mathews away from seeing your housing value crash. At some point soon someone important (kills me to say that about Jay Mathews) is going start reporting the truth about FCPS, and no one will want your house anymore.

I find it very interesting that you are reacting so uncivilly to a change made bya board that was entirely civil in making the change. Says something about the users of this forum, I think.

When I was buying my house, I did not care at all about schools. Only about my commute and the neighborhood. I have a 1 acre lot inside the beltway, but it feeds to Annandale schools which are terrible. Did not bother me at all as I knew my kids would be going to private schools regardless of the district. I would have paid almost 2x as much to be in a "good" school district such as Oakton. Private schools are the way to go.

Ethan, I don't care one bit about what you do or do not do in your bedroom or in your private life. And if an adult wants to have a sex change and can pay for it, have fun with that. Pushing transgender issues onto minors in public school seems a bit of a reach, which is why so many people who might otherwise be sympathetic to your cause are reacting the way they are.

The bigger problem with this whole thing is that there are, well, bigger problems. Class size, crumbling infrastructure, transportation problems, ESOL costs, declining test performance - these are all serious issues for the Board to address. Instead we get the annual pissing contest with the County Board over money and transgender bathrooms. Really? These are not serious people on the SB.

I'll do my damndest to vote Ryan McElveen and the other like-minded SB goons out of office.

It pains me to say this as a second generation FCPS graduate and native, but I'm lost faith in FCPS. Really, to waste a colossal amount of time and resources debating and funding "gender identity issues" when my third grader has 32 students in his class (and one arrived last week and surprise, speaks no English) feels like a betrayal. So many other issues that need immediate attention - like mass overcrowding (due to huge numbers of ESOL students that keep arriving), teaching to the lowest level (I practically home school my students to keep them sharp and learning) and more and more "special" programs.

Enough! Fix the problems facing us now, FCPS - don't go searching for more.

I predict mass exodus to private and perhaps a grass roots effort to form charter schools. Money talks and parents will walk! Seriously thinking about it now...

Sort of Brian. I think he has posted more here over the past five days than you probably have in all of the years you have been on here.

Seriously, if this kid Ethan is indicative of the kids FCPS are preparing to enter the world, we have serious problems.

The problem with going to a private school is that as homeowners our money is still going, through taxes, to this mamouth wastrel, retrobate school system .. which is now becoming a laughing stock and an inconvenience place for our children to learn.

Hey, idiot. Other parents don't mind this policy and are happy as fuck to see the whiny right-wing cretins pull out and send their bratty kids to Our Lady of the Tea Party. It's one less bully or mean girl their own kids will have to deal with.

FCPS will not be a premiere school system until they start focusing on instruction and not on bathrooms for a select few and switching start times.

Uh, huh. Out of curiosity, exactly how many times have incumbent School Board members been unseated in the last decade if they wanted to be re-elected?

For an at-large SB seat, candidates have a big advantage if they are endorsed by the Democrats, are incumbents, and have some name recognition. McElveen is all of the above, so you might as well get used to his shiny bald head if you're going to pay attention to the SB.

It's not a prediction - private schools are at capacity, and they don't add trailers to the parking lot, and they don't take kids that can't speak English. Couple of Catholic HS's had 1000+ applications for 250 freshman slots this past year. The private competitive HS's are more competitive now than ever, and those that were less competitive are becoming ever more so. Unless your kid has great grades AND something else (great athlete, musician, artist, etc), you can forget about private school, especially HS.

If the massive tax base paying for waste in the County and schools starts to erode for whatever reason, McElveen, and his position, become irrelevant.

This is my concern as well. Regardless of where you stand on the issue (and I don't support anybody being discriminated against), is this really something that needed to be addressed immediately?

I can't believe that this is such a pressing, tremendous concern that it had to be addressed by the SB and could not have been handled on a case-by-case basis at each school.

Unfortunately, we don't have a lot of folks running for School Board so the alternatives aren't present to address the concerns some of us have with how serious the Board is being.

We have the representative from LGBT (McElveen), the representative from Korea/GT (Moon), the representative from Musical Theatre (Strauss), and so on. What we need is people who are more than one issue candidates.

Ethan, considering that this forum is essentially the Northern Virginia eqivalent to the Stormfront message board, this is cordial.

People on FXUG do not reflect the views of the vast majority of Fairfax County, they are a obnoxious vocal minority, like the Tea Party. Only difference is the TP actually show their faces, FXUG trolls cowardly hide theirs.

These idiots must think private schools sprout like weeds.

Fools: you can't afford the tuition and your thoroughly mediocre kids wouldn't be accepted even if you could.

Getting included on a list of FFxU all-stars is now something I can cross off my bucket list.

In any event, I appreciate Ethan's willingness to engage in generally civil discourse, even that's outside the norm of the forum.

In the end, this SB policy will have little impact on the vast majority of the population, and certainly doesn't deserve as much attention as it got/is getting.

It certainly is outside of the norm to engage in civil discourse on this forum, but I think doing so is the most likely way to actually be productive for either side.

I agree Ethan. You made your point a long time ago. There are too many problems out there to sit in your basement and be a troll weeks. Go on a mission trip with your church, if you don't belong to a church join one and go on a mission trip or volunteer to help people with life and death needs. Just do something. What you are doing now is counter productive in so many ways.

Actually I suppose you might be right. I'm clearly not able to get the fact that transphobia is bad through these guys' thick-headed skulls, so it might not be worth trying to do so.

I think I'll donate to some LGBT charities instead.

I'll probably continue being part of the troll culture here, but I'll avoid getting into blatantly hateful threads or discussions.

In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

Romans 1:27

The angels were visible as human men. (see verse 1,then see verses 8 and 12 below) Lot was an idiot for offering his virgin daughters to the crowd of homosexual men, but the fact remains that Sodom 9and Gomorrah) were twin cities of abominable homosexual immorality in God's judgement.

Genesis 19
The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground. 2 “My lords,” he said, “please turn aside to your servant’s house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.”
“No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”
3 But he insisted so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast, and they ate. 4 Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house. 5 They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”
6 Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him 7 and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing. 8 Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”
9 “Get out of our way,” they replied. “This fellow came here as a foreigner, and now he wants to play the judge! We’ll treat you worse than them.” They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.
10 But the men inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door. 11 Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness so that they could not find the door.
12 The two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here, 13 because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it.”

Protection for all but come out to whomever and when ever it's right for you. Why launch this witch hunt?

^^^ It's not a "witch hunt" that being launched.
There is no hunting .. it will be out of the closet and out in the open, in the restrooms, locker rooms, etc.

Whatever is "right for you" ... should that include what isn't right for the majority?

Being given special rights and accommodations is part of the complaint.
Your comment is as offensive and facist as the comment "right side of history",... in other words, your saying people have not the right to disagree and if they do, then that makes them some how evil? or witch hunters?

"worried mama" .. OK, you're truly a worried mama .. we all believe that. ;)

I was wondering if you had any advice on how to be a better power bottom? I'm grinding as hard as I can but I'm not getting the balls deep in there. Is there anything I can do to widen my anus? I've been posting as much as I can about transgender policies but my asshole still can't get stuffed by a 14 pound butterball. Please help.

Would using WD-40 help?
