I'm looking to rent an apartment or town home from a private owner. Does anyone know of any good websites to check out?

When I listed my condo for rent, I posted an ad in the Washington Post (first choice), and then local newspapers. If the apartment or TH is in a good location, it will go fast.

Many homeowners are now using Craigs List too because of the cost savings.

If you find a privately owned condo or TH and schedule a time to look at it, ALWAYS take someone with you.

added: let us know where you're looking and (taken with a grain of salt on this forum) someone who lives in that area might be able to lead you away from neighborhoods that may not be so desirable.

Try Wiechert (Weichert?) Realtors, or someone similar. They have access to a list of privately-owned rental properties, and is how I found the house I rented for a bit.

Keep in mind that the realtors don't make much money from this transaction, so they're not as enthusiastic about it. However, they all have access to the same info, and in this economy, I think they'd be happy with whatever they can get.

Another caveat, more people are renting these days, so it may be harder to find. Rent on a house is usually much more than the mortgage would be if you bought it outright. Just some things to consider.
