In a dozen prior Game Sevens over the course of their four-decade history in the National Hockey League, the Washington Capitals had never scored more than two goals in any of those series-deciding games. A lack of offense in those games led to a dismal 3-9 record.

In Game 7 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with the New York Islanders on Monday night at Verizon Center, the Caps once again failed to score more than two goals.

This time, it wasn’t a problem.

Washington thoroughly stifled the Islanders’ attack, limiting New York to a mere 11 shots on net – only three of them from forwards – and one goal. Evgeny Kuznetsov’s dazzling goal at 12:42 of the third period stood up as the game-winning goal as the Caps eliminated the Isles with a 2-1 victory. Washington moves on to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, where it will face the Presidents' Trophy-winning New York Rangers.

Too bad the rangers will easily sweep the caps.

They played the Islanders. They'll choke, they always choke. Always.

If the Caps want to have any chance against the rangers, Ovi needs to step up and score some goals, Mike Green needs to get back to his old self, and Tom Wilson and Troy Brouwer need to get tough and knock out pretty boy Henrik Lundqvist and Marty St. Louis.

I like the Caps, but all signs point to them getting royally fucked by the Rangers. The Rangers dominated their first playoff series while the Caps barely beat an injury depleted Islanders team. Given the Caps recent playoff history, this next round will be over for them in 5 games.

This time it "wasn't a problem"? They won the game by 1 goal and NYI had a PP late. The Caps went out and finally decided to play their best hockey in a game 7 for a change and won themselves an opening round series. Nothing more. Let's be clear...after 40 years of play in the NHL, this team has won nothing. Zero Cups.

I have never seen a superstar athlete disappear in big games the way Alexander Ovechkin does. Did he even play last night? How many times have we seen Gordie Howe, Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier go out and PERSONALLY carry a game 7? Many, many times. When have we ever seen Ovie do the same? Never. He scores goals in the playoffs when the games are decided.

The Rangers win round 2 in 5 games...Nash, St. Louis and Lundqvist ALWAYS play their best hockey in the playoffs against WSH. They'll be hampered a bit by Zuccarello being a scratch but, they will run over the Caps and it "won't be a problem."

DET is currently in the midst of a 24 year NHL playoff appearance streak. 5 more and they tie the all-time record. They've been in business for 89 years and they've won 11 Stanley Cups. That means roughly every 8 years on average, they've won a Cup. Admittedly, their longest Cup-less streak is 1955 - 1997.

You know what they say in that town when the Wings get eliminated? "Fuck...we didn't win the Cup." Nobody says, "Well, we won this many playoff series..."

I thought Trotz made some great remarks in the post-game last night concerning the history and future of DC sports. He said we're poised on a new era here. Respectfully, it starts with player and team performance though. We've been screaming our lungs out since 1992 and having nothing to show for it...with apologies to DC United.

I was amazed they made it this far, I am happy about it, but still surprised.

now that the Caps are playing decently, more haters come out of the woodwork to bash their shitty playoff history. there's no pleasing any DC sports fans anymore...

Look at Ward's performance in game 7 and in last night's game 1... a notable difference in hustle from the offensive line, including Ovi. See the game highlights? He had at least 2 shots that could have been goals. Caps have stepped up, and the nutswingers who have no hope or sense of loyalty to their home team can suck a throbbing knob.
