Does anyone know when the freight trains come through Burke? Like, is it always around the same time, or just anytime?

Tims River Shore on a weekend . That's the main line south. You got a front row seat there.

Lake Accotink Park too its in Burke some what West Springfield area but theres not as many on that track to Manassas one way DC the other and beyond and there up on the trestle but that's close and easy for you and has a merry go round for children too. Its a fun family place lots of picnic spots snack bar and a tour barge they run on the lake for a little ride that's cheap. Good Cheap safe fun. Fairfax County Park Authority Park.

Tim's is in Prince William on the Potomac River. Hard to find, the area is called Cherry Hill. Its a super popular crab house with places to sit and wait. But they have ice tea sodas water ect and kids food if he's hungry.

head out to harpers ferry. several trains daily cross the river and you can get real up close and personal with them, plus you canget some history about the civil war. its only a bit over an hours drive.

well worth the trip.

Go to the Springfield Metro station,
Walk through the main station area to the back.
On your right are some stairs going down.
Go down to the platform below.
Sit and wait.
A very loud and tall freight train will rumble by within 3 feet of your 2 year old and make him into a man.

Yes to Springfield Metro Station. A good place to watch trains. You can go above on the crosswalk and look down on them too. Great for taking photos.

Frank Rizzo be careful at Burke Station. Norfolk Southern will use those tracks and the Doppler effect allows the trains to get right on top of you before you hear them coming so keep the little guy close to you. Other good places to watch trains is Woodbridge Auto Train Station and Ashland. Ashland is cool because the trains run right down the middle of main st. Its a great day trip with the family. Fredricksburg is good also.

Hey Frank @ Burke you can also see the circus train and the parade to GM where they have the show. Also the trains in Ashland move at very reduced speeds due the the main street thing. And consider hearing protection for the little guy as the screeching of the metal on metal is deafening.

Awesome info, thanks!

My original plan was to hang out on the bridge on OX road and watch them pass below. I think I'll plan some trips to these other locations now too.

Thanks again.

Stand on the platform at any depo when the train pulls in. I like Frederksburg waiting for the northbound train. As it makes the bend coming into the station. If you don't do it often, its enough to knock your socks off.

The old Norfolk & Western 611 steam loco is supposedly returning to service and is going to be involved in at least one run between this area and Lynchburg. My guess is that the steam loco will only operate from Manassas south because there isn't a place to turn it between Manassas and DC. You will need to do an internet search to find out the schedule.

No more circus train and parade to GMU Patriot Center. They stopped this within the past year or two...I think that PETA or some other group protested, so now they park at a siding in Alexandria and put everything on trucks.

In the past they were stop at Fairfax Station and walk the elephants down 123...a really cool experience.

Their is an entrance to Lake Accotink on Carrleigh Parkway near Cardinal Forest. Park the car at that entrance and walk 50 yards to a fenced metal enclosed bridge right over the RR tracks. The train will go right under your feet. You can then walk to the park and ride the merry-go-round.

Hey Frank almost forgot King St. Station is good and just off Van Dorn st there is a little Norfolk Southern switch yard that occasionally gets some BNSF trafic. Always cool to see a "war bonnet" loco. Great early Sunday morning fun when mom needs a break and wants to sleep in.
