Where can I get fill dirt?

I need a load of fill dirt to be dumped in my yard and spread. Not exactly rocket science. It's just dirt.

How much of a load? Craigslist has plenty of listings for free fill dirt. If you want someone else to do it for you you'll need to arrange that. Local garden centers that do landscaping could do this, but it won't be very cheap.

What exactly do you need? do you need fill or do you need soil?

yes there is a diference.

fill dirt is usually shit dirt, with rocks, concrete, and construction debris. Soil will be very clean, no large rocks, or debris, and usually some organic matter.

if you ever wish to grow plants or grass in your gard then you need soil or top soil not fill

The dumping it in your yard part is easy and pretty cheap. But they will dump it in your driveway or front yard---not on the street or around back. Moving it by wheelbarrow and spreading it is what will cost.

If you don't mind some undocumented workers in the mix, I can help you out...

Just go to down to the 7-11 in herndon with a pickup truck..

All you have to do is slow down to about 10mph and they will jump in...

Remington's in Falls Church will deliver filtered/unfiltered fill for a price, minimum 5 yards I think? Craigslist posters will do the same, they seem to be mainly guys from construction sites making a little extra cash. It won't be filtered.

Spreading it will require someone else, maybe a couple laborers. Depending what you are doing, it can be a bear of a job. Get it done before the hot weather settles in...

Filtered/screened fill dirt sounds good.
So I just need to find somebody legal to spread it, which is probably easier said than done.

Screened is going to cost. And legal help is going to cost. Mericans don't want to work

300 cubic feet of fill dirt from Remington's runs $30 for unfiltered, $40 for filtered. We need five loads. Each will supposedly cover 10 foot by 10 foot 3 inches deep. For $50 more I am getting the good stuff. We are going to rent a small piece of heavy equipment to spread it, or I will do like I did when I needed a shed torn down. I picked up a couple of good old country boys at the gas station that were made in America and were hungry. Where there is a will there is a way. We are older with some orthopedic problems. Sometimes you just have to pay people to help.

300 cubic feet would cover 10x10 3 feet deep.

If a "Load" covers 10x10x3" deep a load is 25 cubic feet.

You woulf need 12 loads to be 300 cubic feet.

Renting a small piece of heavy equipment sounds good idea. You can charge your neighbors to take turns moving dirt and reduce your overall net cost.

^Thanks for catching my math error. Actually, it is 30 cu feet per load. I accidentally put in a extra zero. But, we still only need five loads based on the size of the area we need to fill. Like I said, I am old.

^^Crap you are right. It is 25 cu ft. Doesn't matter. We still need five loads.
