State Theater in Fairfax
Posted by: MrMephisto ()

So the show starts promptly at 8, and the main act is over by 10:30. No big deal.

Me and a group of other people are waiting out in the lobby to meet the band. The band comes out, we're having some laughs, and I offer to buy them a round of drinks. "Sure," they say, "we would like booze." Keep in mind, it's ten fucking thirty.

I go up to the bar, and the bar is closed. At 10:30. Disappointment is abundant, but we're not deterred. We decide to go to the smoking area and have a cigarette, but what the fuck, the smoking area is closed, too. By 11:00, the staff is trying to herd us out the door. I felt like they were saying, "Thanks for coming, now get the fuck out."

It's an amazing venue, great lights, great sound, and reasonably priced drinks, but that "You're done, now scram" thing at the end of the night left me less than enamored with them.

I have to agree. I've been to State Theater a couple of times and it's more of a Disney family type atmosphere, not time to party. It may have some thing to do with Falls Church cops police station a couple of blocks away.

I've taken a couple of dates there and they all worked out well. I always plan to go to some other bar after the show. There's a good Irish bar in walking distance on the corner of Rt 7 and the road that goes by the Theater. If not there you can hit up one of the bars around the Tyson's area.

FYI - The bartenders probably wanted to go party with their friends as many regular bartenders get Monday and Tuesday evenings off.

The Four Corners, or something like that? That's where we went. They did good business that should have gone to the State Theater.

What concerns me is, drunk assholes are how bars and nightclubs stay in business. The music venues are dropping like flies in this area, and this business model just doesn't seem like a good idea to me. Maybe they do great on weekends, I don't know.

The state theater is in Falls Church City. That's why. Life is different in little red neck falls church city. EVerything closes early, the cops have nothing to do.

And...the owners do not want to risk paying overtime in some cases. I've
also known bartenders who work two jobs and want to get some sleep
before going to the next one. A bartender in another establishment once
told me that if they didnt chase everybody out at closing time,
some customers would stay until daybreak.

I was shocked, too. I didn't mind, though, cuz it gave me more time to get drunk with Mike and Jon. It was awesome.

If you were at the Four Corners afterwards as well, send me a PM and I'll let you know who I was.

Yes! My younger brother and sister were addicted. They lived there. I went a few times, but it was really their hangout. Did you go to FC city schools or county schools? We were right on the border so we went to Haycock, etc. Highpoint Pool?

Nah, I disappeared after it was clear they were taking apart the stage. It would have been cool to get drunk with them. Was it just me or did Jon look kinda like Philip Seymour Hoffman?

I liked that opening band Into the Presence too. I keep seeing comparisons to Queen and I think that's definitely fair.

WingNut, I grew up in the Fairfax County section of FC (Longfellow and Marshall HS) and do I ever remember ice skating at the Village House on Friday nights! Were you one of the fine young men wearing hockey skates terrorizing us gals? Whatever happened to that place?

MrMephisto is correct it is the 4 p's!! They also have GREAT food!

Now that you mention, he looked exactly like him. Especially when he was wearing his little hat.

They were very talented, too technical. Granted, the drummer was from fucking Primus and the cello player's sister is Paz from A Perfect Circle, so it's expected on some level. As musician, I thought they were incredible. However, as a fan, I couldn't enjoy it. I don't mind a couple songs like that, but the majority of their set was too "progressive" for me.

I didn't think they sounded like Queen at all, but the singer did have a great voice.

I still bought their CD, though.

You don't have any experience with this, so I'll clue you in: when you're going to a bar with a rock band and a group of girls, you don't give fuck what the sign over the door says. I'm surprised I even noticed that "Four" was in the name.

The name of my band is "I'm Not Stupid Enough To Tell You and the Why Don't You Get Fucked Orchestra."

Go figure though, their semi-progressive style is exactly my cup of tea. And I didn't mean the band sounded like Queen so much as the lead singer did. But I went out there looking for CDs of the band and only saw shirts. But still, yeah, it would be hard to not appreciate them live.

I love Tool, so it's not like I can't enjoy progressive-type stuff. I'd just prefer every song to not be in a 23/59 time signature.

Another thing is, I'm a singer, so I pay more attention to the words and vocals; however, EVERYONE complained that his levels were not high enough, so I couldn't understand much of what he was saying. That kind of killed it for me too.

You are an accomplished singer? Where have you played? Why don't you try out for American Idol?

It's understandable, it's not always accessible and often overly pretentious music. There are other problems with the label "prog" but I digress. I like the older stuff like Genesis and King Crimson, but also newer stuff like dredg and Oceansize. I'm also probably gonna go see Dream Theater later in the summer. I'm gonna be nerding out somethin fierce there.

Can you pick up on the meaning of a song upon hearing it for the first time?

About as much as anyone else can. I think the best songs are the ones that can mean something different to everyone.

Sometimes I find a less-than-obvious meaning in a song because I've written stuff that sounds like one thing, but means another, but... often, I'd rather not know. Making a song personal to me is what I like about listening to music, and I'd hate to find out that the inspirational, uplifting lyrics that fill my soul with passion (or something gay like that) are really just about the guy's cat. For example.
