What do you think people should not be allowed to buy using food stamps?

Candy, chips, soda, cigarettes, booze, cake, cookies. I think steak and seafood are fine.

You're already not allowed to buy cigarettes or booze with food stamps.

I think that if you do buy cigarettes or booze with whatever cash you have, you should have your food stamp benefit reduced by that amount.

Candy, chips, soda, and other non-nutritive foods should also be restricted. Probably a food list similar to that for the WIC program should be implemented. http://www.vahealth.org/DCN/Publications/Files/PDFs/WICfood%20List%202012%20web%20Eng.pdf

Basically, if it wasn't on the list, you couldn't buy it with food stamps.

I don't think they should be able to make deals with normal paying people in the store or before getting to the store, to buy food for them using the stamps in exchange for a lesser amount of cash so they can buy restricted items.
Happens more than we think.

Who's going to hire someone who has no reliable transportation, two or three young children, no high school diploma, and a spotty work history, let alone pay them a living wage?

And you don't get to say, "Well, she shouldn't have had those kids" or "she should have studied harder in school". Your employment solution must address her situation as it is.

While it's clear that liberal policies and generational welfare led to most people being in that kind of situation, plenty of other people are too. Ever heard of walking or public transportation? Get a fucking GED, go to college, clean fucking toilets, do something and work your way up. Oh, that's right, the leberal mantra is " you didn't build that" to encourage people not to try.

Quit being a stupid fucking chump. Steve Jobs was a fucking orphan and college dropout and he did all right.

Maybe if those 3 kids saw you don't get anything for making bad decisions, they would not follow in the footsteps and try to make something of themselves. Instead they grow up with their hand out.

food stamps should only be able to purchase NON prepared foods.

IE freshveggies, canned or frozen veggies, raw meat, rice noodles, sauces, breads, ect.

Oh and I'll let them buy condoms. we don't want them reproducing...

Who cares? It is not like they can go get more food stamps when their ration is spent for the month. If they blow their budget and go hungry, then that is a lesson learned.

Actually, I think it happens a lot less than you fantasize it does. Once food is sold at retail, it's essentially worthless.

Also, it's likely a person who relies on SNAP benefits has a social circle where most of their friends ALSO rely on SNAP benefits. In that economy cash is conserved for things like paying rent or utilities, or for buying alcohol, tobacco, and narcotics.

What DOES happen is that a retailer gives cash or prohibited items such as cigarettes or alcohol to someone in exchange for some portion of their SNAP benefit, usually at between 30 to 50 cents on the dollar, which means that 10 or 15 dollars of taxpayer cash goes into the pocket of some crook for a 5 dollar pack of cigarettes.

The solution to this sort of fraud is simple: if your store accept food stamps, you're not allowed to sell alcohol or tobacco products.

You stupid fuck. The deals ekt4x described happen all the time.

And your solution sucks dick. It means no grocery stores in Virginia could take food stamps.

Here is the list. The above link did not work right.-----

Items that can be purchased with SNAP include:
•Food or food products meant to be eaten by people
•Vegetable seeds and food producing plants, roots, and trees for family consumption
•Baby formula, diabetic, and diet foods
•Edible items used in preparing or preserving food such as spices and herbs, pectin, and shortening
•Water and ice labeled for human consumption
•Snack foods
•Meals delivered to elderly or disabled SNAP recipients if the organization providing the meal is authorized to accept EBT cards

Items that cannot be purchased with benefits include:
•Prepared hot foods in grocery stores
•Any prepared food (hot or cold) sold and meant to be eaten at the store
•Alcoholic beverages and tobacco
•Cleaning products, paper products, toiletries, and cooking utensils
•Pet foods
•Items for food preservation such as canning jars and lids, freezer containers, or food wrapping paper
•Medicines, vitamins or minerals
•Items for gardening such as fertilizer and peat moss

Retailers will not give cash change on an EBT purchase. The EBT card will not allow a person to receive cash from an Automated Teller Machine (ATM).

Food purchased with SNAP benefits is exempt from the state sales tax. However, sales tax is charged on the value of manufacturer's coupons that might be used in the transaction, and the sales tax must be paid in cash.

Example: An EBT cardholder's groceries add up to $27.50. She has manufacturer's coupons which total $3.50, to reduce her grocery bill to $24.00. $24.00 is deducted from her EBT account, and she will owe Virginia's food sales tax on the value of the coupons (2.5% food sales tax times $3.50 equals 8.75 cents, rounded to 9 cents). When items that were purchased with SNAP benefits are returned to the store, the merchant credits the money back to the EBT account. Cash is not given back.

At the checkout counter, tell the cashier beforehand that you will pay with your EBT Card. Depending on the store, you may need to separate the items.

Every creature of God deserves sustenance. That's an easy concept to comprehend.

Every fit and able body needs to employ his hands for his or her own sustenance, and for those he or she supports. An easy concept to comprehend.

Finally, every fit and able body should pitch in and help those who need help.

Again, an easy concept to comprehend.

The problem is the people who can work, but choose not to, and then receive benefits that should have gone to a needy person.

You see, Democrats prevent Government funds from going to the needy. The Unions contribute to the problems.

It's a true Conservative notion to help those in need; the problem is, in the Democrat world "those in need" includes the real needy ones, and the on top of that, it includes anyone who decides that they don't feel like working.

Well, I'm not convinced M O'M needed to be quite that vituperative, but I was going to point out essentially the same point: if taking food stamps means you can't sell alcohol or tobacco, then folks who rely on food stamps will have trouble finding anywhere to shop. How many stores are going to chase away the white-collar, upscale crowd (OK, that's mostly the booze nowadays, as smoking drops off -- but still) in favor of folks on food stamps? I'm guessing about zero.

So the stores that take food stamps will likely be small and overpriced. And the spiral continues.

Food stamps are supposed to be supplemental to recipients' budget. They are not, and were never meant to cover the total sum of grocery costs per allowance term.

Often, there will be talk about the daunting task of effectively sustaining a healthful, balanced diet on stamps. What's truly astonishing though, is the abundance of people unable to grasp the intended purpose of food stamps.
L O L!

Personally I have no grudge against food stamps nor those that collect gov't assistance of any kind. But let's not front like the gov't intentionally doles inadequate stamp credit so recipients are destined for malnourished obesity on processed junk. Recipients that rely exclusively on stamps to buy food are misusing them and only have themselves to blame if the ultimate result is struggle-fat.

Agree. Most places sell beer and wine and cigarettes in addition to food. Can't think of one that does not.

That's the intent, but I have gone through a period of buying all my food solely from food stamps equal to 6 dollars a day, for close to a year. Of course I'm white and live in a largely white area, within walking distance from a Giant. Given proximity to a real grocery store, it can be done, deliciously, with plenty of meat although I can only cook simple meals even with unlimited budget.

I HEARD that someone in my neighborhood found two unlocked newspaper machines and visited them on a regular basis when the urge for a 24 oz. strong beer, Steel Reserve or whathaveyou hit. Also heard that after months the machines were eventually locked. Maybe he got greedy taking ALL the quarters from the more popular machine, but apparently it went on for some time.

I work two jobs, pay my child support regularly which takes the majority of my paycheck, live on Ramen and would never want food stamps!

Breakfast: Eggs any style, toast with butter, milk

Lunch: Leftover cooked meats or cheese on bread sandwich's, some fruit, fresh raw veggie, milk

Dinner 1 : Baked chicken, steamed veggies, mashed potatoes, bread , milk or water
Chicken left over for next days sandwiches.

Dinner 2 Baked Ham, mac and cheese greens bread milk and a bunch of left overs ham and eggs, Ham omelets, Ham sandwich, Scalloped potatoes and Ham, veggies galore

Food item ideas galore so what's the problem with this Is VERY true?

Convenience items should only be for those on assistance with no working kitchen stove such as having only a microwave. Only the very poorest elderly low income people who CANT WORK, as example should get a wider selection.

I would like to thank all you "do-gooders" for holdin a job that pays taxes. I appreciate the $480 I get a month to feed me and whoever may swing by. The steaks, chicken, shrimp and anyything else that looks good. As well as the fast food when I get the munchies after I get done blazzin a blunt. Yea, I make plenty of $, could defenetly afford all that food myself. The government don't know bout my funds tho', never will. You whites owe us for what you've done to our ancestors and we'll take it however its handed out. You expect me to go and get a job makin $10 an hour for you white people to take a third of it for taxes. Hell nah! You must be on somethin better than what I'm smokin. Guess what I'm eatin for dinner tonight...a $17 grilled steak, (grilled on a $800 grill that ur white kids help pay for with their addiction) wit a1 sauce, onions and mushrooms, baked potato with butter, sour cream and chives, and I haven't decided what else is gonna be on the plate. Some sort of veggie. So keep on bitchin bout how us niggas are spendin ur money. Ain't anything gonna change. Write ur congressman, governor, hell you cvould even wrtite the president but he a nigga too, so he got our back. Gotta go tho', taco bell is callin my name.

I think you should be able to buy toilet paper. That is a necessity of life.

With an attitude like that,
Conservatives would applaud you.
Liberals would condemn you.

The ebt program costs nothing. It is an investment in our future. We are feeding future taxpayers. Every dollar spent on ebt returns hundreds of dollars to the tax base. It is a great program.

I hate you bastards. You were born on third base and think you hit a home run.

I was born in a public rest room.
The police took my baby pictures.
The city named me. (not Jane Doe but not much more creative)
18 years of foster care in numerous houses. (they only do it for the money).
Then the street.

I make minmum wage and I take any freebie I can get. I do what I need to do to get any enjoyment out of life and fuck anybody that diont like it.

I feel for your difficult situation, but the more handouts you give, the more situations like yours come up.
