Things NOVA is famous for?
Posted by: EatMorePeeps ()
Date: July 17, 2006 12:39PM

This is my first post after lurking for many months, so please be kind.
I was thinking of what events fairfax/nova is famous for. The first few to mind are:

- The Lorena Bobbitt incident in Manassas
- Sniper shootings
- The Reston Monkey house of ebola fame in the book "The Hot Zone"

what else?

Hi and welcome to this site. You will love posting here. Everyone is very sweet!! Another Fairfax occurence is the Hanssen spy story and the plane that hit the 14th street bridge. I know that was in Arlington but it was pretty close.

The plane that hit the pentagon on 9/11 - I'll never forget driving across the TR bridge at about 2:30 and seeing the huge black smoke cloud and helicopters circling over the pentagon. By that time, there was no traffic at all - clear ride through town, across the bridge and down 66.

Not as cool as some of those other ones, but you get out west a little bit, and the Virginia Wine Country is pretty famous among wine connessiours (sp?).

Also, the Reston/Vienna area is world famous for computer technology, I've heard it referred to "the east coast Silicon Valley".

How about the whole Chandra Levy ordeal? I guess that was in DC.

We also have the Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, that's getting to be a pretty popular tourist attraction.

Also, Linda Tripp (Clinton/Lewinsky deal) lives and runs a German Christmas store in Middleburg. Here's an article about the place:

It was in DC, she lived near the Taft Bridge across from Woodley Park.

That Linda Tripp article is funny- big career move for Linda. Where the fuck is Middleburg?

The Udvar Hazy Center is under-rated. It's a very impressive museum. They have a space shuttle and the Enola Gay, I was surprised.

Yea, its Annandale-on-Hudson, in upstate New York. Thats where Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, the core of Steely Dan, went to college. Steely Dan by the way is not a person. Stick with Justin Beiber and Lady GaGa, who are.

Steely Dan is a GROUP, not an individual person. Of the two founding members, one went to HS in NJ, the other in NY. Do some fact-checking, Dude. And AGAIN, the Annandale referred to in the song is Annandale-on-the-Hudson, in NEW YORK

Sorry to tell all you loyal Tribesmen (and women) from the College of William and Mary in Virginia, but "My Old School" is not a reference to your alma mater. It is about Bard College, frequently referred to as "William and Mary-on-the-Hudson". Hence the shout-out to W&M.

taken from: http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=7629

This song isn't referring at all to the venerable College of William and Mary in Virginia.

Bard College, located in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, is sometimes nicknamed "the William and Mary of the north". The Wolverine is a passenger train that once ran from Boston-New York-Detroit-Chicago and stopped close to Bard College.

The song's about a marijuana drug bust. The drug references are subtle: "smoking with the boys" and oleander (a plant that doesn't grow in New York's climate unless under an ultraviolet growth light).

The bitter narrator had an equally culpable female accomplice who turned state's witness in

Bard college is not in northern Virginia and is not even mentioned in the song. Steely Dan was lamenting the inferior education available in Williamsburg at William and Mary, and stating his desire to attend one of Annandale's fine colleges, either NVCC or the University of Northern Virginia. Unfortunately as of last month the University of Northern Virginia was ordered to close, which leaves Annandale with only Northern Virginia Community College.

Nice. I never knew that. We used to hear the line that W&M was "the Harvard of the South," and laugh that you never heard a school up north refer to itself as "the William and Mary of the North."

That's an interesting tidbit about Bard. And kind of... sad.

Front Royal is definitely Northern Virginia. So is Winchester, Woodstock, Edinburgh, Strasburg, and New Market.

Northern Virginia is not limited to the area around Washington DC. The
Northern Virginia Daily newspaper is based in Strasburg.

They lived in Falls Church and Alexandria before they fucked up Oasis. Typical Northern Virginia losers who are given a family business and run below the ground.

Our namesake, Lord Fairfax and his family, the most brutal slave owners in the country.

That alone should cause an uproar to change the name of Fairfax.

That is a terrible thing to say about Meade Skelton.
He bathes more often than that, I think.

And he shampoos himself with shampoo for women and fags.

Bourbon whiskey was originally invented in Fairfax County, back in the 1640s. At that time, West Virginia and Kentucky and Ohio were also part of Virginia. But the distilling started in Fairfax County!

That's where the name came from, you fucking dipshit. The formulation of the mash was invented here when Kentucky was nothing more than the western part of Virginia.

If true, it's an error. Five Guys started in the shopping center at the corner of Columbia Pike and Glebe Rd, in Arlington. We worked around the corner and used to go there all the time. Good times.

Oh, I know where it started. Not to nit-pick but the poster did say "NOVA" and Arlington is NOVA.

Also, Dave Grohl and NOVA is a good place to store circus animals during the winter.

As far as the whiskey argument goes (and I'm too lazy to look this up right now), it might be that Nova is/was known for Corn whiskey (80-100% corn...usually 100). Bourbon Whiskey is a mash that is at least 51% corn but less than 80 (usually around 70%). Wheat whiskey (at least 51% wheat, usually 100) is often considered to have originated in Virginia and maybe Northern Virginia...which is why Kentucky distillers often create wheat whiskey as a "Virginia exclusive"
