Asian Gathering Herbs on W&OD
Posted by: omg wat? ()

I have often noticed Asian women on the W&OD trail gathering some sort of herb or plants or whatever along the side of the trail. Anyone else notice this? Very bizarre behavior.

Was it near bamboo? My Asian mother likes to go out and pick bamboo shoots this time of year.

Asians are smart when it comes to picking herbs and such ... that is why their food tastes so good. My grandfather used to pick wild onions from the yard and put them on his sandwiches ... we are not Asian .. but why not pick, if it's good to eat in the wild?

It really bothers me when they are 4 abreast walking on the left side of the path!

When I was a kid we'd occasionally pick berries from the side of the road or pick flowers from whereever, so I don't see it as that unusual. If you are really worked up about it though, it is illegal and you can call the cops on them.

They could try to come up with bigger menus. I always have to alternate between general tso's chicken, garlic chicken, schezhuan chicken, beef and broccoli, then start over. Gets old.

Yes, picking plants from the ground is indeed bizarre behavior. I don't think I have heard of, or seen this done, outside of Fairfax. Seriously, why don't you ask them?

They're just pacing the distance to your MG positions. Wait till dark when the mortar rounds precede the full attack.

Try Kim Chi, Bulgogi, Bi-bimbob, ChapChae ... I guarantee you'll love it! (Korean food)

Would you rather have them going around picking up the neighborhood cats and dogs? Be glad they're only taking plants to eat!

I've noticed that too in my neighborhood. Asian women squatting and picking what my grandma called spring onions. The only problem, she was doing it along the walking trail by the powerlines. The power line company sprays herbicides there during the fall. Ouch.

I've made it a point not to eat most things in the wild here in Fairfax. Unfortunate, yes but it's the truth. I've caught some pretty decent sized bass and catfish out of Hemlock but I would never consider eating any of them. With the chemicals and drain runoff from the highways no telling what the fish have in their system. VA DNR has a chart of the recommended servings of fish caught in the region and I think you can eat 1 in Fairfax and not run into health problems. Catch and release

As a non-US born Caucasian, I have been warned many times by Caucasian Americans as I picked mulberries along Four Mile Run/WOD, because they are poisonous! :-)

@RoseM: I cannot believe that anyone is so stupid as to claim that mulberries are poisonous. Just last night I had a drink with gin and some native mulberries that I picked a year ago---delicious. Also made a pie yesterday from from 1/2 wild blackberries and 1/2 wineberries. That, too, was delicious. And by the way I am Caucasian.

Wild onions around the area are delicious! They would be assume in Chinese dishes.
