Phone report from reliable source about 20 minutes ago.

East-bound Lee Highway Rt. 29 blocked at Cedar Lane by fire truck across all lanes forcing cars into gas station at southwest corner with FCPD presence.

Major police presence at nearby Lee Hwy/Prosperity intersection and also EB service road of Route 50 just east of Prosperity.

Checking FCPD twitter feed per below, it is funeral procession for retired Fire Chief.

Alternate routes should probably be used for a little while longer.

FairfaxCounty Police @fairfaxpolice twitter feed:

The funeral procession for retired Fire Chief Gaines will impact traffic in the Tysons/McLean area at lunchtime today. Please plan ahead 1/3

Procession will leave McLean Bible Church @ 12:30 and go east on Rt 7. Left on Gosnell to Gallows, stopping at CO13. Then traveling thru 2/3

neighborhood streets. They will turn left on Rt. 50, rt on Fairview, rt on Rt 29, left on Hollywood into Natl. Mem. Cemetery. Plan ahead 3/3

I was caught in that backup. I thought there was an accident. 2 ambulances went screaming off to Fairfax . it was a long backup and blocked the entrance to Tippy's

Glenn Gaines deserved to have a funeral procession like this. He changed many things in the fire department, particularly the way the department attacked garden apartment fires. RIP Chief.

Loot the outer apartments first, then work inward.

Taxpayers paid for those firetrucks to run.The family needs to pony up a few thousand to cover the cost of diesel and everyone else who had to sit with their cars running wasting money and precious time. In a budget crunch no one wants to see taxpayers money wasted on someone no one knows funeral.

How many ambulances were used in this procession? I want the family charged the 500 dollars per ambulance the county charges when anyone is transported. Were on duty FCPD personnel on the clock in taxpayers cruisers directing traffic? I want a freedom of information request to see how much this cost the county.

No one gets a free lunch.

If they were EB on route 7, they should have taken a right on Gosnell to get to Gallows, but oh well. Probably in no hurry, striving to inconvenience as many as possible in the spirit of an actual Fairfax County emergency over-response.

Right you are. There was an accident at around the same time.

I turned on WTOP just after I got the phone call about the closure of Lee Hwy. WTOP did not mention the funeral procession traffic disruptions, but said that there was an accident near the 66-Beltway interchange.

The County will close libraries, but waste money on this. The chief's family should have paid for this, especially in a time when the County is complaining about how broke it is.

When you die we will have a procession of 50 shopping carts manned by your fellow Walmart employees and we wont charge your family anything

A procession 50 shopping carts manned by fellow homeless derelicts would be more like it.

To all the whiners,
You're absolute right. A man who spends almost 50 years in the direct and often dangerous service of your home, county, and country, doesn't deserve this. A man who raised a daughter to he a selfless, self-sufficient person and spends his "retirement" working for free to improve your odds of survival is "a nobody"...to you. To you, he is the reason you had to sit at a stop light and didn't get your beer. To you, he's a nobody because YOU are ignorant. The funny part is- Chief Gaines would have, as his daughter so eloquently stated, "said that he didn't deserve this". His grandchildren were in that procession and if the chief's men wanted to honor him, and give a grieving family the same support that ged given to thousands of others, then deal with it. Grow up and thank your lucky stars that Glenn Gaines cared about your community enough to protect it.

He deserved so much more.
Oh, btw....it's precisely because the firefighters wouldn't abandon their posts, that the procession had to go to them.

At the end of the day it is about the paycheck and nothing else.
