repo boat

I have a friend who has a boat that is under repo. He has it hidden and gave me permission to use it. Do you think I could suffer any consequences from driving it?

Repo doesn't care who's driving it so long as you give them the boat when they find you.

so you would think that I could use it but one day someone will come looking for it??? no real problem for me aslong as I can get some use out of it.

Repoing a boat is a civil matter afaik. I don't think they can somehow pull the boat's registration or do anything with the police except get them to help if you get hostile during the repo process.

Just go out and float around. Worst case scenario they make you go back to shore and hand it over. Just make sure you have your buddy's permission.

This has been your free legal advice from a random dude on the internet. use it wisely.

From I've seen the boat patrol doesn't have a system for checking registration numbers. I got stopped once and the only reason was because one of the letters fell off the registration number on the bow.

In order to confirm the boat was registered they asked me to showed them the paperwork. They looked over the papers briefly and then went on their way. I've never seen a boat number called in. Repo's are only recorded once the boat has been seized so police know it was not stolen.

Woudlnt the repo company have to bring a trailer that fits the boat, if it is in the water? I'd think that would be a bit of trouble

they have trailers that fit a wide range. My little ski trailer can hold up to 11 foot boats.

If the boat is in repo mode it might not be registered. On the water without registration? Don't cross the marine police or Coast Guard. And if it's in repo it's probably not covered by insurance - but clearly you don't seem to care much about risk to yourself.

As for repo-ing it - a repo-er is going to have the necessary trailer - probably a hydraulic boat trailer for nearly any size OR they'll just hot wire it (REAL easy to do on a boat) and take it to a marina with a lift to plop it on a trailer. Repo-ing a boat is easy.

as long as you don't exceed the water speed limit, the boat patrol won't care who is driving.

Depends on where you are. Some locations are hyper vigilant and will stop whomever, whenever they feel like it. Don't have required safety equipment, over loaded, "poaching," leaking oil (even a sheen), improper operation? You get a citation (Oh, and leaking even the smallest amount of oil can cost you $10K plus clean-up costs). Have and expired registration? Your day ends. Most people don't realize that the Coast Guard can board you without probable cause under their charter to enforce customs, environmental and numerous other laws and regs. NEVER screw with the CG, they can make your day suck in a big way.

Yeah, and if you can't pay for it, give it up. They'll get it sooner or later.

Sounds like just another member of the parasite class.

I am not looking to get over on anyone. I want to try adn negotiate with the bank to take over the boat I am just waiting to get all the info.

The boat is in great shape so I do not think i would get stopped for driving a POS that is polluting.

Do you think I will be able to register the boat? What is required to register a boat? Maybe I could just try to renew the existing registration?

Course, you could probably get a finder's fee from the repo people if you tell them where it is and then use that as a downpayment for your own boat.

The boat is being stored on a trailer at someone elses property, that is how it is hidden.

I'm sure everyone already knows, but that show "operation repo" is completely fake. I can't stand it. Its almost as bad as that terrible "double pits to chesty" commercial that comes up sometimes on that network.

If you don't know what I am talking about, count yourself among the lucky.

I don't know what they do with the nickel and dime boats, but the lenders will pay big bucks to get a goldplater back.

I'm a professional captain who normally does deliveries, but I'll take a repo if the money's right. The lenders fly me and my crew anywhere and we always get our boat. My favorites are the trans-atlantic jobs. The last one we did was a 185 footer that was in Gibralter (Mediterranean) and they wanted it delivered to a broker in Miami. It was a 20 million dollar boat (gorgeous). The fuel alone was 100K. Fun trip.

Hawaii to the West Coast is a nice ride too.
