Drama (literally) at Edison
Posted by: Public Speaker ()
Date: March 26, 2015 11:10PM

The principal at Edison is looking to cut the theater arts teaching position from full-time to half-time. The official explanation is declining enrollment but the rumor is that Brumfield is significantly less supportive of the theater program and instructor than Croghan was.

Let the trolling on this thread commence ...

You can't ask for a thread to be trolled. We only troll people looking for general responses.

You know who might be interested in working half-time, which is almost nothing in a nine-month a year schedule, Robb Spewak, also known as Fatt Rob. He was a theater arts major.

Edison is not really known as a good theatre arts school. They might do better by making it an after-school only program with three part time teachers to lead it.

Do away with drama and music, who cares?

+1. And sports. If you want that for your kids, pay to join a club. We can no longer afford all these bells and whistles - stick to academics and if you want an extracurricular program, pay for it yourself.

Drama and music ARE academics. Music is directly linked to other classes. History, math, etc.

When you die or get married you won't get any music at your event, OK?

You don't need a football player in order to have a funeral or a wedding.

They are activities - nice ones. Nothing against them. Just that you should pay for them just like violin lessons or club sports.

Get rid of all after schools clubs. Why should we be having "Science Olympiads" and "Robotics Clubs" and "Chess Clubs?" Who is paying for all that? Math, Reading, Writing. That's it. Everything else is frills. We can't afford it. You want your kid to learn chess pay for a private tutor.

It is an accident of history that schools have sports teams and band/orchestras. If you want it for your kids (and I want it for mine), you should pay for it. Or go to a private school where it's included.

The same argument could be made for foreign languages, PE, vocational education, AP and IB classes, ESL and Special Ed. Then we could cut history back to just enough to satisfy the SOL requirements, and teach that in the kind of mass lectures that are used for intro level college courses. That ought to allow us to massively cut the cost of providing an education for high school students. Of course the typical student would be graduating with the skills necessary to be a retail clerk, our test scores would probably drop to the level of East Bumfuck and people from southern Virginia would start complaining about the preferential treatment Fairfax students were getting in UVa admissions.

That isn't to say that FCPS shouldn't spend its money on these extra programs wisely, or that the current level is appropriate given our resources. Maybe it doesn't make sense for each high school to have its own drama teacher, chorus or band instuctor, ancient Sanskrit teacher etc, and for the schools to offer the complete range of extras they currently do. Maybe we should look into having teachers for some of these extras split time between two schools, or look into part time instructors. Maybe we look at switching some of the more advanced programs to optional after school activities. Point is though that many of them do offer something that makes keeping them in some form worth while.

I believe the three R's the poster is referring to is short hand for academic subjects, not just reading, writing, and math. Point is that some kids (some athletes, musicians) get their activities school funded while others do not.

I remember being in band in HS in PA and the school had no harp. You could play piano, or bass, or a number of other large, costly instruments that belonged to the school, but not harp. So there was a girl that had her own harp, and would bring in to school on Monday's and take it home on Fridays. So play piano, get a school funded instrument (in school of course) but play harp, too bad.

The activities the school funds are really just random, and as the country becomes more diverse, that will become more obvious. We have plenty of Asians in Fairfax - why no school badminton? Lots of Indians - why no cricket? Better to just eliminate it all and let parents fund it themselves.

You want a good drama program? Go to a school with a good drama program. Like these:

If you're calling for all after school activities to be cut you're an idiot.

It'll never happen and the fact people suggest it is just mind blowing

Drama is cut and some art sections because Edison has moved from a 4 x 4 to block scheduling. Thus instead of being able to take up to 32 units, students may now only take 28 units over four years. Many of those are state mandated and thus the number of electives students can take are diminished. As staff knew this was happening, those who had well subscribed elective programs should have put an enormous effort in to recruitment especially for rising freshmen. Often students who begin with music, art, drama, journalism stay with the programs for four years.

Dear baah you need music for a funeral? You only need casket and cemetery. Do you think people go to school to be in bands? I bet that Mr. Nick Nack and Great Zuccini went to school for something different. Do you mean to say if they went to school for music they would be better? A lot of weddings have a DJ and that is not taught in school. Did you think you can have a DJ and not a band at your wedding?

Can't go back as they were the only secondary school in FCPS to have the 4 x 4 and it was incongruous with all neighboring jurisdictions. It caused great problems if students transferred out to another FCPS school or in from another jurisdiction.

school plays "influenced" by dc blacks and foriegners at the DC Teaches Union Head Quarter in DC

are hosting new scripts having children play out the race card:

a play where whites apologize for being alive and foreigners play as if they were right to illegally enter the country and do crimes to punish them.

the DC Teacher's Union has OFTEN been investigated. it is a corrupt union organization run by DC blacks who CLAIMS to be the treasurer of teachers union:

but isn't. it's a big fucking lie.
