UVA and W&M decisions are out

What the flying fuck. I had a 4.4 GPA and 2160 SAT and I got waitlisted at both. They're gay as ever this year. The only people that got into both for my school were ~7 people in the top 10. Overqualified nova kids inflate the instate acceptance rate to 45% despite how hard it is to get in.

Who else did or didn't get in?

UVA and W&M are by no means bad schools…but, truth to be told, you should also apply to real leaders such as Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, as well as some good foreign schools such as Oxford and Cambridge. If you can speak or learn German, there are some excellent schools there as well.

Tech is, frankly a joke-not as bad as Regent or Liberty to be sure, but still a joke nonetheless.

They're giving the slots to out-of-state applicants who pay triple the in-state rate. Understanding state taxes subsidize their over-paid faculty, they still don't care to admit many VA residents. Write your delegate and complain.

To the contrary, public colleges are required to accept students in numbers expected to lead to a yield (which is the actual number of admitted students who then enroll) off 2/3 in-state. It still means qualified Virginia kids don't get in, but there is a cap on the number of out of state kids. I think UVA gets less than 10% of its operating fund from the state too, but I don't know where the rest comes from then. It's definitely frustrating. My son had stellar stats, certainly in the range for it but was denied at Virginia and went to Tech, and he loved it. My daughter got in to both UVa and W&M and chose Virginia where she is very happy. My next son didn't apply to any of the three and is at another state school where he is flourishing. I'm sorry, OP, but I would bet you'll go to the admitted student events at Tech and be very excited to attend school there by the time you leave. Good luck.

There actually isn't a hard cap, although legislation was introduced and not passed. It's more of a 'pressure from Richmond' cap than a real one.

Remember the story of David Franklin DeJesus. Applied to UVA in 2009 as David Franklin using his Virginia home address, and as David DeJesus from his mother's Maryland address. Exact same application, though he used an SSN on one and a TIN on the other. Virginia application rejected. Maryland application accepted, with plenty of financial aid.

Know someone went to Harvard, trained as a lawyer, and is trying to work as a programmer. Very intelligent person but never really gets anything done on his own. Notice they now provide programming language classes in CompSci and other majors. In my day, you were expected to learn languages on your own time.

UVa takes that Public Ivy line seriously. They don't really need another overachieving NoVa student with a high GPA, high test score and large number of advanced classes for an incoming First Year class that is already overstocked with these. There are a large number of colleges and universities out there who are looking for precisely this type of student though, and are willing to offer nice financial incentives for you to go there. If you had done your homework you might have found a number of very good schools that would have taken you, and that would have offered enough money so that they were roughly comparable to UVa in net cost.

I had no idea this was true until my child decided to major in something that is not well-represented in Virginia schools. They received terrific enticement packages to go to out-of-state very prestigious schools. We did not qualify for any financial aid by any stretch of the imagination and never really expected or asked for anything. I think the Virginia schools are driving away Virginia students with their acceptance policies and admissions policies. I know that they are also limited in the number of students they have room for.

The entrance standards are MUCH LOWER if you're Black and indicate that you want to major in Victim Studies. That's a fact, which is why degrees "earned" by Blacks are worthless.

With the school’s long history as a technical institution, graduate offerings include programs in the highly ranked College of Engineering. The school is also a research powerhouse, with seven research institutes and two university research centers – including the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science and the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute – that offer research opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students alike. All students can also take advantage of the Math Emporium, an off-campus lab that houses more than 500 Mac computers, tutoring sessions and classes. Notable Hokie alumni include football player Michael Vick and talk show host Hoda Kotb.

Top 25 in engineering. But I guess you worthless business majors wouldn't know nothing about that.

SO you arent from nova? How shitty is the backwater you are from that you come on this website to talk to humans. Go back to goochland or danville or richmond you cunt. Your highschool is a joke, thats why you didn't get into those schools. Wow you took AP calculus? So do 40% of Northern Virginia students, its expected along with 6-9 other AP courses.

Correct, and I'm also top 10. That wouldn't happen in nova. UVA bottlenecks it so that they only accept the top 10% of a highschool's class so they can keep their precious "percentage of students in the top 10% of their graduating class" statistic high, regardless of how well qualified the top 25% or 50% may be. That's why the kids at TJ get buttfucked every year.

Only fools would apply or attend Virginia Tech. It's the NOVA of universities. You would be better off going to NOVA for two years and then transferring to a real college.

But if you don't mind being murdered or turn up missing, then go ahead. That school has a great track record for those sort of things.

Genuine question...

Is the expense and hassle worth it? What options are there besides a four-year college? (please fight the urge to post jokes about McDonald's burger flipping)

If you're set on a STEM job, there are still options other than a 4year. such as NVCC that someone mentioned upthread.

What sucks about NVCC (or any community college) is that credit transfers are a pain. I have found CLEP to be easier, cheaper, take far less time, and be universally accepted.

My personal experience and opinion is that my time at college was a waste of time and money. I worked instead. I ended up equal/better than college grads in my field with my additional years of experience, but I didn't have a huge debt to pay off. I have consistently made over $100k each year for the last 15 years with a couple of $200k years during some good times.

Today, can anybody reasonably expect to make a career without an education?
