George Mason is in a state of decadence
Posted by: Real LK ()
Date: March 23, 2015 01:35PM

The internet is awful--On a college campus, it should be state of the art.

The food is overpriced.

There is always some sort of construction going on.

The education is okay, although sometimes it moves too fast for you to actually learn anything.

A sense of community? At George Mason there is none. Little to no effort is made at bringing students together or providing them with a stimulating extracarricular enviornment.

All of these things and more lead me to the conclusion that George Mason is in a state of decadence. It is more concerned with its image as a business than paying attention to the needs of its students. Instead of sinking 650 grand into the bank account of the basketball coach, in the hopes that they will make it into the sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament, which they never do, they should upgrade the internet for starters.

George Mason gets a C- in my opinion.

A real GMU student would not use the word decadence so flamboyantly incorrectly. What word are you actually trying to use?

Agreed...what (correct) word is it you're looking for, college boy?

Decadence, n., : behavior that shows low morals and a great love of pleasure, money, fame, etc.

This is George Mason for you, it's filled with a bunch of materialist, capitalist pricks who are not concerned with academic excellence, but instead fitting in with the decadent culture of this entire region. You get girls that have social rights stickers plastered all over the backs of their laptops, and want-to-be artsy types that sit outside puffing on their electronic cigarettes like they are the oracle from the Matrix. Who on earth counts going to George Mason as a blessing? Going to school over here offers to gaurantees. They do so little to help you along in terms of a career path, really, all they are concerned with is money and fame, hence my use of the word decadence.

P.S. I'm an English major, don't question the diction of an English major, lest you want to be reproved.

I'm guessing he means "decay". But he's from GMU, so we can understand how the mistake happened.

DICTION: the accent, inflection, intonation, and speech-sound quality manifested by an individual **speaker**, usually judged in terms of prevailing standards of acceptability; enunciation.

Diction refers to speach, not writing.

man, when's the last time they upgraded the books in fenwick library, 1969? Those books are falling apart, you open one and a cloud of dust comes out. this whole school is garbage.

One of my professors is teaching four other classes. They need to take some of the money they put into that lame basketball program and give it back to the students, because, as things stand now, you get NO bang for your buck at this school.

OP must be a commuter.

Internet if fine. Sorry the wifi isn't strong enough to suffice your porn addiction.

Food is moderately priced you fat fuck

The fact that there is always construction is a good thing. It means the university is expanding and making an investment to its and your future.

There are hundreds if not thousands of opportunities to get involved at George Mason outside of a classroom that are appealing to almost every interest, religion, culture, etc. Mason pushes hard to get connected. The fact that you find yourself complaining only shows that you are socially awkward and inept to network.

Do yourself a favor and transfer.

If it was in a state of "decadence" they would be getting so many applications for admission they wouldn't be able to keep up.

Decadence normally means moral decay.

You mean the basketball coach only makes $650,000? Coach K makes just under $10 million a year!!!!! GMU won't do anything until they start paying their coaches reasonable salaries!

Really hoping OP is a troll and not really a George Mason student, which would mean a high school allowed him to graduate with his atrocious writing "skills."

Only thing I remember going there is that nice new building...yet no new parking.

Oh, they built a parking garage, then price gouged people to actually use it. That was all they did. All I remember was driving around following people going to their car. I felt like a creep when it was a girl.

The only sense of community was going to the cafeteria and seeing Persians sitting with Persians, Asians sitting with Asians, blacks sitting with blacks, etc. ...so much for all of that inclusion BS they always yapped about. The greek scene? My goodness that crap was just sad and pathetic. I laughed my ass off when I saw their events. I knew a few people who lived on campus, and their dorms were shit holes. Not with the $$$. I was thankful to be working and renting a townhouse with friends while I went there.

I cannot totally bag the school. 60% female population, on a nice warm spring day, was AMAZING. Once I did park my car, the campus was pretty cool. While I loath some classes (liberal arts mandatory shit), I loved my major core classes. Some fantastic professors.

Overall, if I had the funds, I would have gone somewhere else without a doubt.

Fucking parking.

I see the difficulty. Your arguments are so illogical (non sequitur) that the word choice still doesn't seem appropriate. If you were really a GMU student you wouldn't throw such unfounded accusations at the university because you are a misogynistic prude.

OP understands neither decadence nor 'state.' A 'state' implies a temporary or transient condition of existence ('state of shock' 'state of the Union'); decadence means moral decay or cultural decline as characterized by excessive indulgence in pleasure or luxury.

He needs to highlight the contrast better; 'high food prices for students but free meals for basketball players; no internet for the general students but the coaches get high-speed internet; no social events for commuters but hourly massages for the athletes. You have to show basic decency is being neglected for excess for pleasure in another area.

Sounds like the real state of affairs is one of apathy by the university towards the students needs according to this person.

I would frequent the campus to see friends. Let me tell you, Mason does not maintain an exclusivity on idiocy.

Today's college studens, no hyperbole, are completely useless. All they are beholden to is what the nanny-state, Establishment social-engineers have indoctrinated into their little skull salads. I could wipe my ass with most of their degrees. Unless you're going to Law or Medical school, college is worthless IMO.

This is the best out society can produce? Moronic, socially inept vampires with bad attitudes and entitlement complexes? These are our "best and brightest"?

George Mason University was NOT a public school for democrats to train facist foreigners using money - not borrow - but forcefully taken from taxpayers

until the 80's or even 90's it was PRIVATE. around the days of democrats and teachers unions in 90's, GMU got subsidy (only fair, as NVCC was public and competing)

the whole fantasy of gov running schools and being the "decider of what is legitimate" was from democrat teachers unions in the 90's

absolutely none of that crap was happing before. none of the socialist facist crap.

adults got FREE night classes paid for by their employer: run by employer, and graded by employer. college was for mostly people with EXTRA TIME AND MONEY who wanted to pad their resume. in the 80's. and some said in the 80's: college is for people who can't do the job

every school book today will deny that up and down

fucking liars - i was there. so were they. and i wasn't the only one complaining about their facists socials moves toward the money - and the bank doors.

George Mason University announced today that it will be an education partner with TheDream.US, a private national scholarship fund that helps highly motivated undocumented students attend college. TheDream.US works with colleges across the nation by awarding up to $25,000 to students who qualify and have received and maintained Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status. The goal of the scholarship is in line with George Mason’s commitment to making college accessible and affordable. And it supports Mason’s desire to collaborate

You need to check the dose of your meds, you're either hallucinating or just plan nuts.

That's one messed up looking project. Resembles a jumbled bunch of legos thrown together. Who was the architect on that mess?

GMU IS A JOKE

There is a reason why people refer to GMU as NOVA 2.0

It's in the lower tier for Virginia Universities. Low ranking tier for academics, quality of education, quality of the student body, etc. VCU and Christopher Newport even exceed GMU in ranking.

A majority of the students at GMU are borderline mentally impaired. No joke. May as well take classes at Phoenix Online or DeVry University. Don't surrond yourself with those unmotivated dumb GMU students who all wish to party with Lil Wayne one day. LOL, it's not going to happen. Get a job.

avg gpa for GMU is 3.9, can't compare, VCU has art and pre-med program, CNU is a 4 year liberal arts college with very few masters programs

my friend went to GMU, graduated and couldnt find a job.

Once he removed GMU from his resume and just put his degree on there, he started to get offers.

So yeah....gpa my ass

The average GPA for students @ GMU cannot be 3.9 unless the only degree they offer is elementary reading or basic arithmetic.
GMU has become a breeding ground for liberals taught largely by professors with communist and socialist ideals. They teach you what to think as opposed to thinking for oneself, thinking "outside the box" or critical thought.

Much of the colleges and universtities in the US are quite the same, with pontificating professors, who quite literally believe they are some sort of gods, and should you disagree with their ideals, you will fail the class and be ridiculed openly by them.

There are a few schools of higher education which still value the uniqueness of every student and their unique potential to use their brains a bit more for things like ingenuity, critical thought, improved problem solving and creativity.

You knuckleheads are all living in the past. GMU is actually pretty difficult to get into these days if you are not in roughly the top 20% of your class. I know a number parents with kids that did not make it into GMU this year. They got accepted at 4-5 other VA schools but not GMU.
