Please...allow me to open The Jaguar School. Especially what with you being a "niggar" and all.
You're right. $135,000 is quite a bit for an E-type. And you're right again...a (and I quote) "minty" one can indeed be had for $50,000.
But what I am looking for isn't "just" an E-Type. What I am looking for specifically is a 1961 model year E-Type. This was the first year of production. These cars had their hood latches on the outside of the hood which require a manufacturer supplied tool to open. (This was a holdover from its racing heritage which was abandoned on later model years) Other features specific to the 1961 model year were a flat floor pan, glass lenses over each of the headlamps which were sculpted to complement the car's front end and finally knock-off style hubcaps. (Note: Knock-off in this context referring to hub caps that could be physically removed and secured by pounding on the "wings" of the center hub nut with a rubber mallet.)
In conclusion, when you factor in my requests for a drop-head coupe, British racing green, tan leather interior, wire wheels and a manual gearbox...$135,000 puts me well within the ballpark as well as thoroughly compensating any third-party such as the OP, 007 here for his/her time and effort in running down this car.
The trouble is...like many cars of this vintage, everything I've seen that meets my requirements is a barn find for $10,000 and requiring full restoration OR...a low mileage trailer queen selling north of $200,000.
