George Mason Fires Basketball Coach

George Mason has fired men's basketball coach Paul Hewitt on Monday, the school announced.

"Mason made a significant commitment to its athletic programs, especially men's basketball, when the university moved to the Atlantic 10 Conference two years ago,” said George Mason AD Brad Edwards. “The university has high expectations for the program and thus determined a change was needed."

Over his four seasons at George Mason, Hewitt went 66-67 and never reached an NCAA tournament game. The Patriots struggled mightily this season, going 9-22 with a 4-14 record in conference play. Over the last two seasons, George Mason went 8-26 in the Atlantic 10.

Who will replace him?
What about the assistant coach? Is he gone too?

Assistant coach is in the running. Hewitt really sh!t the bed on this one. He used to put out a reasonably competitive team at Georgia Tech in the ACC, which is why Mason brought him in. He basically ran this program into the ground.

He was a bad hire from the start based upon a friendship and a faulty reputation of his performance at Ga Tech. With Hewitt's hire GMU has squandered the opportunity to firmly entrench the university into the Mid Major grouping in basketball. Instead, they are essentially starting over again.

Annual salary $744,000. Should have given Larranaga a raise.

They Never should have let Larranaga go. His son is actually up for consideration to replace Hewitt.

Would Hewitt have been fired if he was white asked the barrista at Starbucks today.
