FCPS Drafts 2015-16 Calendar If State Grants Pre-Labor Day Start

If Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has one more day of school cancelled this year due to inclement weather or an emergency situation, the district could apply to the state for a waiver, allowing FCPS to begin school the week prior to Labor Day. In order to give parents and community members an idea of what the calendar would look like, FCPS has drafted an alternate calendar. This alternate calendar would allow FCPS to begin school on Monday, August 31, and end on Thursday, June 16, 2016.

This alternate calendar is not currently under consideration by the Fairfax County School Board. Any change in the proposed 2015-16 calendar that the School Board will consider at its business meeting on Thursday, March 26, would require further School Board approval.

FCPS does not currently qualify for a waiver. In order to apply for a waiver, a school district needs to average eight full days of school lost due to inclement weather, energy shortages, power failures, or other emergency situations in five of the previous ten years. FCPS students missed 4 days during the 2006-07 school year; 10 days during the 2009-10 school year; 4 days during the 2010-11 school year; 11 days during the 2013-14 school year; and 10 days during the current school year.

To qualify for the waiver, FCPS must be closed a total of 11 full days during the current school year. <--Now we know why there were so many school closings this year.

And anyone doing fall sports or band or anything like that should expect to start on August 1st.

How is it that a $2.5B entity is unable to develop a calendar for school more than 6 mos in advance? This used to be put out in January - now it cannot get done till March? They already have the 1st day of school posted, and I'm sure a lot of folks have already book flights/vacations/camps based on what they've already put out. Expect a lot of moaning of it goes before day after Labor Day.

Schools should be taught year round. Here's the schedule(Elementary, Middle, High):

1. Pick a day to start.

2. Every 3 months students get a week off.

3. The exception to #2 would be where the "every 3 month a week off rule" if it falls either in June/July/August. One of these months the students get 2 weeks off so the family can do the family thing.

4. Weekends/holidays are still days off.

5. Snow days would be eliminated since the students are going year round so if they close becuase of it then they close.

So it looks like students will get 5 weeks off, plus weekends, plus holidays, plus snow days.

Need to do something to increase the failing state of the U.S. when it comes to it's education system.

Unlikely that FCPS would make this kind of an adjustment on a one-time-only basis. What would be the point if they would not qualify for a waiver the following year? Just to experiment? They would get monster push-back.
