The latest running craze around here

Running in the street when there are sidewalks. And I'm not talking about when the sidewalks are iced or snow-covered. I'm seeing this all over Fairfax County. Many run in the wrong direction, too.

Asphalt is softer than concrete, and is better on the joints. Running in the "wrong" direction, as you put it, lets us see and more easily avoid shit heads like you.

Always a good idea to run on a regular basis where your lungs will be forced into the uptake of the lingering soot, ozone, and unburned hydrocarbons from gas and diesel exhaust fumes. What could possibly be wrong with that? Besides, many people come through knee- and hip-replacement surgery just fine these days.

While that my be correct from a physics standpoint, the impact on human anatomy is negligble. And I have been a runner my entire life (hey eesh, you can find my real name in the Massanutten 100 results).

The "wrong" direction is running with the flow of traffic. Which gives you no opportunity to see shitheads try and run you over.

The road does NOT belong to automobiles alone. For that matter, automobiles have less right to the road. So, SLOW DOWN, MOVE OVER or STOP. GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE WAY and let the people go by you dumbshit! What did you think? Someone was in YOUR way?! Idiot.

Yeah...when we were kids, lo these many years ago, we were ALWAYS told that if we were in the street for whatever reason, to walk/run/levitate against traffic, so we'd have some (small) chance to dive out of the way if someone came straight at us.

I see adults violating this rule all the time, and just don't understand it -- it's no burden on them to use the left side of the street; can we really as a nation have forgotten such a basic rule?

Well, yeah, I guess I can answer that, since I also see people older than I am walking blithely behind cars in parking lots that are backing out *and already moving*, no less. That's just asking for it...

From Boy Scout hikes. Which side of the road do you walk (run) on? The RIGHT side. Which side is the Right side? The LEFT side.

I like it. I guess not many people were Boy Scouts (or were paying attention, if they were...). Or maybe Scouts don't hike any more, because someone tripped over a curb and cut his knee and his parents sued...

If I'm going down a road like Fox Mill Road (no shoulder), and some dumbass is running on the road, I blare the horn as I pass. I usually get the finger in my rear view mirror but, what the Hell, it was fun. There are plenty of places to run besides a narrow road with no shoulder.

Fashion runners who go spend 100s of dollars at Dicks or PRR and run 2-3 people wide only on the weekends. Those that go running with their big dogs and think its cute when it wants to stop and sniff YOU.

Ive run my whole life and here is the deal. Streets are okay if there is little or no traffic and lots of room. You dont run down narrow streets with cars parked on the sides no matter if there isnt much traffic. In the burbs streets can be okay if there is little traffic. This is especially true at night were running on the walks can be dangerous because of lighting, low branches and of course uneven sidewalk.

If the sidewalks are straight and the light is good you should be on the walk. I came across two idiots walking 2 abreast in the street against traffic when the walk was perfect. A holes. I had to drive into oncoming lane to avoid them. The best thing is to find a trail and run on that.

Please! The impact is severe, and many types of "running shoes" only make matters worse. And much of the negative load on the body is cumulative.

Walkers/joggers should not be in any roadway where sidewalks/sidepaths are available. You will receive a warning handout from County Police for violations during designated ped-safety awareness periods. Pedestrians are not specially blessed or anointed. They have the right-of-way only in specially-marked crossings and only when they have not entered such crossings in disregard of approaching traffic.

Bicyles are treated as cars under law. All traffic laws applicable to operators of automobiles are also applicable to operators of bicycles. You must come to an actual stop at all stop signs. You must use turn signals. You may not just cruise through a red light because you deem cross-traffic to have cleared. The spandex-set has really been kind of slow on the uptake here. They are either sort of stupid or sort of a bunch of deliberate scofflaws.

Yes the same kind of scofflaw that does not come to a complete stop at a light or stop sign or same kind as anyone that goes above the speed limit. You sir are the idiot in this scenario.
