Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
Anyone heard anything or been to the Pho 98 off route 50? I heard it's the best Vietnamese food around however I wanted to obtain some other opinions before heading out there. Let me know!
Pho98 is located in the shopping center at the corner of 50 and Centreville Rd. They have a lunch special with a large Pho, spring roll and a drink for around $7.50. There's alway plenty of meat in their Pho and the broth is very good. I think Pho495 may taste a little better, but they skimp on the meat most of the time.

I didn't care for that one (didn't realize the name). Drive a mile further west and there's one that's better on the left (by the 7-11). Not too crazy about the Pho Bistro in Centreville either. Hard to get good pho outside falls church (eden or loehman's plaza).
All that said, hard to think pho in 90 degree weather.

I used to like the Pho by the 7-11 too (Airline Pkwy). That place doesn't have the wait staff to handle a crowd there tho. Last time I went there I had to wait 45 minutes just to get my order placed, while I watched other people come in after me and get their Pho. I ended up walking out before the food ever showed up. Also, their pho is expensive and has little meat in it.
Co workers go there all the time (I am not a big viet food fan). They insist it is very good for pho. Four sisters in Vienna / Fairfax (off Gallows) is great Viet food, pho is just ok. Again, coming from a non viet fan.

I agree. Four Sisters became the best Vietnamese place around here the day after Queen Bee in Clarendon sadly closed it's doors. I never tried their pho, but their Hanoi Roast Pork is stellar. It's a pretty cheap restaurant too.
The Pho joint in the Pam Am shopping center (dont know its official name--just look for the PHO sign) is pretty stellar too. Never a huge wait, and the big bowl is way more than most can eat.
the rest of the menu scares me, though.
(Pan Am is at the corner of Lee Hgwy and Nutley. Pho joint is just down from Glory Days.)

That's odd. I had the pho @ the place in Pan Am and my wife didn't care for it. She prefers the Viet House on Main Street in FFX City. The Four Sisters is at Gallows & Lee in that shopping center sort of thing that includes Panera, right?

Yes, that's the place. They used to be in Eden Center for years, but they moved into that new Merrifield location a year or two ago.
I'm a Pho freak. The most popular place is Pho 75 and a lot will say it's the best because that's the only place they go... but honestly, I've been to a lot of places and they really are the best. It's consistent every time you go in. Like McDonald's, you know what you're getting. Other places have inconsistent broth, not enough meat, more noodles, etc... Pho 75 is dead on every time.
Golden Cow is ok across the street from Pho75 on 50. Pho 50 sucks, Mr. Pho in 7 Corners blows.... the place that looks like a partial library in Eden Center is pretty good, 4 sisters Pho blows (but that's a restaurant), few places in Clarendon aren't worth the trip.
Pho50 does not suck. I think it's one of the better ones around. I think it matters what time in the day you go. If you in the morning, you're more likely to get a bowl that's been from the night before; which is actually a good thing since it's been cooking for awhile. If they start a new batch that day, you're usually screwed.
It's all a matter of personal taste really. I like Viet House, Golden Cow, and 90. The owners of VH and 90 are brothers. There are 3 Viet House locations and two Golden cow locations as well.
