Fairfax County police investigate light aimed at helicopter
Posted by: Herndon Hornet ()

Who did it?

March 3, 2015 10:25 am

HERNDON, Va. (AP) — Fairfax County police are investigating what they say is a dangerous incident in which someone shone a bright light into the agency’s helicopter.

The department said Tuesday that the incident occurred last week in the Herndon area. The department says the helicopter was returning to its base around 8 p.m. on Feb. 24 when someone trained a bright white light on the aircraft and followed it.

The department says the beam lit up the entire cockpit, creating dangerous visibility issues for the pilot and crew. If the pilot had been wearing night-vision googles, the department says the light would have caused temporary blindness and been extremely dangerous.

Police are working to identify the person responsible.

Perhaps if the helicopter had been flying at a safe altitude the light wouldn't have been an issue. The helicopters themselves shine "bright lights" at the ground. Guess they don't like their own medicine...

Lasers are another thing. Lasers are illegal to shine at aircraft and anyone aiming a laser at an aircraft deserves have their eyes burned out as punishment.

Always wondered if that was illegal or not.

I believe Virginia Code Section 5.1-22 covers it.

While a it is illegal to point a laser device at any aircraft, it appears it is also illegal to point a bright light where it interferes with the operator, as in the article.

§ 5.1-22. Interference with operation of aircraft; penalties; venue.

Any person who interferes with or threatens to interfere with the operation of any aircraft, unless he is authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration or the armed forces of the United States, on or over the territory of the Commonwealth shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. Where the act or acts of interference or threatened interference are of such a nature as to endanger the life of the aircraft's operator or the life of any other person, the person interfering or threatening to interfere shall be guilty of a Class 6 felony. Any person who knowingly and intentionally projects a point of light from a laser, laser gun sight, or any other device that simulates a laser at an aircraft is guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. Venue for the issuance of a warrant for the arrest and trial of any such person is hereby conferred upon any court having criminal jurisdiction in the political subdivision in the Commonwealth where the aircraft either took off prior to such offense, or where it lands or comes to rest subsequent to such offense, or in or over which the offense occurred.

Bull shit. My gen1 NV goggles that were made 22 years ago have a light filter. The bright light would have dimmed out the goggles. What a load of lies. Anyone who has served in the military can contest to this.

The code specifically says laser, or "any device that simulates a laser". The fact that the wording is so narrow is a giveaway. If the law was intended to apply to searchlights/spotlights, it would have said so. In fact the legislature deliberately omitted spotlights when the law was originally passed. As it is, § 5.1-22 applies to lasers and similar devices. Period.

I'd be more concerned about the police flying helicopters at low altitude over densely populated areas while wearing night vision goggles.

They found the source of the bright light-

It was a bright search light used to attract people to the grand opening of the new mattress store in Vienna.

How about investigating why the helicopter was flying too low, thus making it possible for a simple light from the ground to light up its cockpit.

Bill.N. you are a typical idiot, one would realize they where flying low in Herndon as its right next to a major international airport, and big airplanes with 300 people on them don't have to worry about helicopter getting in their way.

It is much more dangerous to fly a helicopter at low altitude over densely populated areas, especially at night. A helicopter doesn't need to fly under 400 feet over Herndon in order to avoid other aircraft approaching or departing Dulles airport; that is absolutely ridiculous.

Im sure they are using something like newcon NVS 6 or something similar with auto brightness adjustment. Fairfax only buys the best, whats 20k for a gen 3 or 4 headset in a very bright city. I doubt they are using gen 2 goggles.

some dickhead is getting $1,000,000 or $2,000,000 a year grant money to edit the FBI website

the damn DC niggers put up allot of crap about the FBI seeking anyone pointing cheapass chinese lasers at planes

well. i've had one. they loose cohesion just 1/2 block away. no way by the time they get up that high they are still "powerful". and pilots - i doubt if their line of sight ever lines up except while landing - they can't see the ground.

i also know if a laser is pointed at the eye you WILL NOT SEE IT unless looking at it straight on. (mostly - in most cases)

your money: hard at work. $2M / year for fucking lying and bad blogging: federal pay

these niggers were suggestnig on the web that you turn in any friend who has a a cheap chinese laser-pointer (YES, the kind you tease a cat with) who as even talked about pointing it at a plane - that's right - even mentioned it

i am suing all that: your a lying nigger fed getting overpaid for neurotic web bloogging and were threatining the public - and like nazzi asking people to turn each other in.

go to hell btw

i've seen a laser pointer they are crap that couldn't light up a cats ass from a block away. and i have a hole in my eye from a real laser - which i never saw

i was told: do not build lasers. they are commercially avail. for ~ $5,000 so it is never worth spending (a year) developing a custom laser - you loose $20,000 at least just making it.

so who is "funding" atlanta "lasers" ?

and what do they have anyone is buying? NOT INCL some fuckign gov contract.

and what the fuck is atlanta doing in VA ?

Wow, I thought shining a laser or light at an aircraft was a very serious crime. Instead it's a Class 1 misdemeanor (unless it endangers someone's life).

Flicking a cigarette butt out the window is a Class 1 misdemeanor. This is the same thing?
