Do any of these private "police" groups operate in Fairfax County?

You have to be kidding me!

Non sworn "officers" in PW county "arresting" people?

I guess this happens in HOAs with private roads. No jurisdiction on State owned roads/property.

Aquia Harbor has their own force, and so do areas of Manassas. Any of this going on in Fairfax County?

Aquia Harbor is a pretty big enclave of homes. I am sure in Manassas, it's in some of their apartment complexes. Could happen in Fairfax. Does it?

And he is not alone. Like more and more Virginians, Youlen gained his police powers using a little-known provision of state law that allows private citizens to petition the courts for the authority to carry a gun, display a badge and make arrests. The number of “special conservators of the peace” — or SCOPs, as they are known — has doubled in Virginia over the past decade to roughly 750, according to state records.

Does this mean they can receive military surplus like the regular police? Im all in if that's the case. MRAP here I come!

At THE Reserve in McLean they have a private security company with armed guards who run the gatehouse and patrol every property in THE Reserve at least twice a day. They can and will arrest people.

Yea so? Whats the average price at the reserve, 4 million? It is a prime target for crooks and if you can shell out huge HOA fees to have armed security so be it.

ok, so in a gated community like the Reserve, I get it. They can do what they want on PRIVATE property, but it sounds like some of these guys (and gals) may roam on public land. Is this the case?

If this is true, I'd say we have a problem.

I especially like the part where is said in the article, a nail tech has more training than the private "police". Classic.

I like the way this "cop" made himself a sergeant...why not "Captain," or "Commander?"

If an SCOP tried to arrest me I'd sue them for every fucking penny they had, and would absolutely win.

Playing wanna be police will eventually land you in jail in a suburban area like PW county. Particularly this story about this guy, a extremely violent run in is bound to happen in those housing project he patrols. Those developments are nasty ghetto open air drug markets. One day he will waste a skittles and will be left high and dry. he is not covered by a department so is open to huge litigation charges if his arrest don't hold up in court. Lucky for him he deals with poor people that cant afford or are to ignorant to challenge what he has done. A good attorney would chew him up and spit him out.

I can understand some of these counties that solely rely on the state police to have a deputized officer that is willing to work without pay or armed security but calling themselves police is overdoing it.

I've seen these SCOPs all over Vienna. They are a para-police force protecting the many mattress stores. They were at Vienna's 125th birthday yesterday too. They were guarding the vintage steam powered mattress manufacturing exhibit set up next to the petting zoo and the model train exhibit. Lots to see and do in Vienna.

Uh yea,
I live a .25 miles from the Reserve. I really believe A bunch of Cartmans "respect my Authoritie" are going to scare away criminals.

When you can't get a job as a real policeman and you get fired from being Tyson's Mall guard become a "private cop".

I hear train holdups are down 95% since the new Reserve Sheriff started. He has the fastest donut record in the East. Clint Eastwood and is going play the role in the spaghetti-o Drama with Lee Van CLeef.

Give me a break.......

Why is there a gatehouse into the community if you come from Old Dominion, but you can just drive right in from Georgetown Pike?

This is reprehensible...at least with Fairfax County Police, there is citizen oversight, complete transparency, and police officers are held to high standards....oh...never mind....

A lot of jurisdictions in Northern Virginia intensely dislike Conservators of the Peace. They are much more popular in Central VA and the Tidewater region.

What happens if you are approached by 1 of these guys and you don't comply? Are they allowed to just shoot you, as in FFX Co.?
