Its only been about 5 years. It started as a PG County hip-hop thing but now the local news reporters are using the term. Most of them are transplants so they probably have no idea that people who grew up in the area would never say DMV.

Mosaic is the name they gave to cheaply constructed commercial exteriors that mimic the look of rundown 1920s factories.

Guess we can start calling Chicago "The ORD" then, and Orlando "The MCO". And we can tell all our friends that we live in "The IAD". That wouldn't be stupid at all.

I always thought it meant the entire tri-state area of Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. Delmarva is preferable since it avoids confusion with Department of Motor Vehicles. Sometimes they say the "Delmarva peninsula" to refer just to the part on the east side of the bay.

Speaking of that government office, Virginia and Delaware call it the DMV, but in Maryland it is called the MVA. So there is no "M"?

That's correct...DC Rapper 20 Bello gets credit for creating the term. Wale & Grind Time DMV Rap Battles took the term nationwide.

Tiny numbers of people pay any attention to the dying genre of rap music at all. There are more people who eat fried pickles.

When WTOP-TV (channel 9) was forced by the FCC to change its call letters, they went to WDVM-TV. That other nonsense is a dumbass hipster affectation that has no history and no future here. It's just a way to say, "Hey, look at me! I'm a stupid shit!"

Like all communities along a line between the Pentagon and IAD, Annandale does have a Vietnamese presence, but it is far more prominently Korean. Vietnamese arriving in NoVa after the war settled most notably in Clarendon, giving us the era of Queen Bee. Then taxes began moving it all further out and eventually to Falls Church, which became a hub of the Vietnamese community here with the opening of Eden Center.

In the DC Metro Area, it is slang term for the DC metro area. It is a term that has been recognized as far back as 2004 when local R&B and Hip Hop stations "WKYS 93.9" and "WPGC 95.5" started advertising themselves as radio stations that play the biggest hits in the DC area. As the time has passed by (and thanks to Wale), it has become a widely known term for the DC metro area. There have been local international calling cards that also bore the name "DMV" as far back as 2000, but never were able to popularize the name for the DC metro area like the way the radio stations did. It is not a popular term in the actual "DMV" area as many people prefer to represent their areas of DC which are: PG, NoVA, Route 1/The Highway (Richmond Highway portion), Chirilagua/Arlandria, South Arlington, and many smaller communities.

The DMV thing is used by chic hipsters, and hip hop artists. DMV is the modern way to refer to the area around D.C.

It will take a little more time - it is correct term to use now.

Surprised no one has mentioned NoVa. I've heard people in the Tidewater area call this area NoVa.

It'll always be the name for the community college that tries to go by NVCC.

You left out pathetic middle age men trying to stay relevant with chic hipsters and hip hop artists. Fortunately many younger people make as much fun of DMV as us oldsters do, so its life may be limited.

If you think about it, DMV is a crappy acronym; and this is not simply because it already refers to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Does it include Baltimore or Richmond or Tidewater or SW VA, areas which are not part of the DC Metro area? How about the eastern areas of West Virginia which are arguably becoming part of the DC Metro area? Also what genius decided to set the order from lowest in population and geographic area to largest?
