Yes Its Cold! And A Rare Site To Be Seen
Posted by: The Riverman ()

Take a ride down to the Potomac River Belle Haven Marina anywhere along the GW Parkway from up Chain Bridge to Mt. Vernon. Froze all the way across to the Maryland side , a Rare site to see!

Dont try walking across though!

It freezes plenty of time along the shores and some way out, but rare to freeze all the way across.

I'd like for every complaining parent to shut the fuck up until you go out tomorrow morning at EXACTLY 6 or 7am not 8am not 9am not 10am. And if really want to go there, it snows feet multiple times in the Dakotas and they still have school, but we don't follow them for a reason.

That is an insane picture, I was over Key Bridge today and it looked frozen solid.

When I was a kid in the 70's there was a serious freeze like this too and rumor was a guy tried to drive across the river by Fletchers and lost his car in the water.

Never confirmed.

LOL. The Potomac freezes over fairly regularly in this area. This is hardly a rare occurrence.

It froze over just like that last winter at least once. It froze just like that several times between 2003-2013. IIRC, it never froze in the 2001 - 2003 timeframe. But it sure as hell froze over for weeks at a time in the 1999-2000 timeframe.

If you think this is rare, you're not paying attention.

I went outside and the left side of my face I think got brief frostbite. My hands felt frozen and hot for 20 minutes after getting home. Colder than my heart.

That May Have Been In 1977

We had a serious winter in 1977-78. The Sharpes Island light house on Chesapeake Bay was tilted sideways by ice. The river was froze over also that year.

Bullshit, it freezes by Chain Bridge pretty often, not by the WW where the water is more tidal and the river much wider.

Where are you from, tourist?

Febuary 1977. My girlfriend and I walked across the river and back. We were trippin' and the ice was talking. Eddie Bauer expedition parkas, Sorel's and nothing could stop us.

Time frame sounds right, I heard of people doing it but I was still riding Schwinns back then.

Yes It was cold that year 1977 , that was the year Jimmy Carter was sworn in and he and his wife got out of the car and walked on PA. Ave. Wicked winter of 76-77 it was. And No the river does not freeze regularly ALL the way across on the streach from the WW down.

LOL, dumbass.

I lived in the south side of Old Town for years. And worked in the Canal Center buildings for years, as well. I kinda, sorta know the river.

No it does not freeze over fairly regularly unless you consider a few times in the last 15 years 'regularly.' Not rare in my opinion but certainly not common.

I would think that an event occurring, on average, in 3 out of every 5 years counts as a "fairly regular" event.

I remember winter 76-77 as well. Temps didn't rise above freezing for like a month. The Bay was frozen all the way across, and salt water freezes at a lower temp than fresh water.

The river froze at least a foot thick. There were lots of stories about mysterious car-sized holes the ice but I'm here to tell you we drove my '68 Jeep down the boat ramp at Colchester Marina (Occoquan) and all the way across the river to the Sweden Point crab house on the Maryland side.

Young, drunk, and stupid!

more like once every 5 years - not frequent, could be 'regular' if it was on a set cycle but its not. Hailey's commet is 'regular' but not frequent. Anyway it does not freeze over every 3 or even 5 years. Last time was 2004 - thats ten years.

Interesting. Since Glen Echo is UPRIVER of Georgetown, that would mean an approximately 50 mile roundtrip.

You folks sure were tough back then, unless you were referring to a different amusement park closer to Mt Vernon on the Md side...

Well this was a long time ago but it was almost directly across the river from Mt Vernon. I thought it was Glen Echo?

The sailor on the Sunfish is one of the best sailors on the river. Belle Haven Marina is a great place to be in the summer on a windy day to "mess about on small boats".

Now if I had a ice sail boat I would like this cold. Yes they exist they have a sail and sleigh runners. If this cold keeps up! Give me the summer day!

So Even if the river froze once a year thats a rare event but it does not, It happens now and then Last year was a extreme one too in Jan. This one is a bitch coming in late Feb. In a week and a 2 days its March. We get snow all the way to April Ya Ya, But not that often, a snow in March is somewhat rare but it happens It seems like winter now wants to drag its ass on along here and not give up. Global Warming?? WTF? but these things happen, Its just the way it is.

Snow in March I wouldn't really call rare. In more than half of the last 100 years we've had some accumulating snow in March. In some years it's been the largest snow of the year.

Snow in April is rare. Not many in the last 100 years. I'm too lazy to go back and count again but it was something on the order of less than 10-ish times.

Hey I can go with that, but the roaches it will not faze them a bit so Apts known as Roach City will Still be known as Roach city.

When I lived in Roach City I brought a cardboard box with something in it to my mothers house, She was suspicious of my Roaches. I told her the box was clean, No Roaches and brought it in. All of a sudden she yelled theres one there, In the tubes of the card board a Roach was sticking his head out! Damm!
Wish I had some serious pointed toe cowboy boots then. Get um in the corners! No Escape.

It's cool. Cold is when you take a breath and feel the lining of your nose freeze. Cold is when you spit and it crackles before it hits the ground. We're not there yet.

Having said that, living in this climate does leave you more sensitive to the cold. When I lived in the north I wouldn't have minded this as much as I do now!

Aren't February and March normally the two months when this area gets hit the worst with cold snaps and snow storms?

All I know is that I'm ready to set up a fishing hut, drill a hole, and get some ice fishing action in the Potomac.

Have the Great Falls frozen over this year?

I've walked across the river dozens of times, in all seasons, and never had a problem.

Ebb and Flow, freeze and thaw. That old man river just keeps rollin'.
Anyone crazy enough to try ice-fishing? Would have to fish deep.

Go talk to them at Belle Haven Marina. They have a sailing school and rent the sail boats if you take the sail class, you get a card and can rent small sailboats all over with the card. If you have a acrd from another sail school they will take that. You have to have a school to rent the boats. They will be open for the sail boat rental in early April. It is a lot of fun and there easy going good people there.

That's a great map.

I wonder if they have historical data from other years.

I don't think the Potomac freezes more than once every 8 to 10 years. I'm skeptical that anyone walked across it down by Mt. Vernon.

BTW I saw the Chesapeake Saturday morning and there was a lot of ice except near the channel around the center of the bridge. NFW was anyone walking across this though.
