As a radar detector user in Fairfax and VA, that is my favorite law.
Only high end undetectable detectors can be used in VA. Those which do not leak any emissions, those which do not false to other detectors. Keeps the crap out of VA.

Don't waste your money on a detector if you dont buy jammers, LIDar is used a lot around here, and you can't detect it before its too late. You have to jam the fuck out of it,

Other users tell Waze where the speed traps or road hazards are and it tells you before you get there if it's on your route. It sets your route (fastest or shortest) depending on congestion or accidents. You can use it to depart on time so you can get where you're going when you need to be there and not waste time leaving early unnecessarily so you're not late as driving times around here can be a crapshoot. residential roads could be straight and flat enough for us to go 120 mph but that doesnt make it safe. Where pedestrians are present (not on the highways) it is simply never safe to go 80 mph - there are too many variables. People and animals around the roads need to be protected. At 80 if you go off the road (heart attack or stroke) you could injure/kill people that are inside their homes. Especially you pick-up truck and large suv crowd.
So relax and go the speed limit on residential roads. Empty highway - go for it. See how fast your car can go on an empty highway the only person that gets hurt is you if you mess up. That is why there is an Autobahn

To be perfectly honest, I don't know why it is illegal for me to 'intercept' radio/light waves. Those signals are trespassing onto my property. They belong to me at that point.

There is only one reason why radar detectors are not legal in Virginia. It is because no resident or group has ever gone to court to overturn the law. It should not be illegal to pick up random radio waves across the radio spectrum.

I wondered what page my video was on. I saw the hit in my statistics. 5lIonCrTalE is my video. I use Waze and my Escort Redline on long trips.
I've been working to get a collection of speed traps on my dash cam as I run around town.

Back to the original question:
The only reason that radar detectors are illegal in Virginia is because no one has ever gone to a state court to protest the damn law. There should be nothing illegal about picking up random radio signals in the air that are in your vicinity. That is the case in 49 other states.
