Blue Crabs at asian supermarkets
Posted by: ITRADE ()

While the wifey and older son go off to soccer or ice hockey practice, I will often take the younger boy to some of the larger Asian supermarkets in the area (Great Wall on Gallows, Super H Mart on 29, etc.). I've noticed that many of them carry live blue crabs for what appears to be the standard price of $2.99 a pount (works out to about $1.00 a crab) or about $12.00 a dozen.

Anyone have experience with them? Are they any good? My impression is that they're mostly live (you can bang on them with a set of salad tongs) but that some of them look on the small side.

Thoughts?

If you have a place to cook them outside, I'd say go for it. My neighbors
(not Americans) cook them in their kitchen and the stench of cooking
crabs isnt pretty.

Yes... Blue crabs are amazingly tasty. Just don't eat the female ones, for a myriad of reasons.

Get about 1-2 dozen, pour a bunch of budweiser beer, bay leaves, and a shit ton of old bay... Put it all in a pot, steam it until they're reddish brown, serve, and enjoy.

Got it. We usually buy them steamed from Captain White's down at the Waterfront, but was curious as to how these work out.

Blue crabs are always sold live...you never buy dead crabs unless they're cooked! There's alway a few dead ones in a bushel, you chuck the dead ones.

Whenever I'm jonesing for crabs, I just hitch up the USS Tubby, grab my 1200 foot trot line, a sack of chicken necks, a case of beer and head for Nanjemoy Creek (Charles Co,, Md) and catch a mess of 'em. I almost always have the recreational limit in the boat by noon. And the neighbors have the water boilin' when I get home.

Damn, I think I'll go tomorrow!

For what reasons would you not eat female crabs (besides their impact on the crab population)? Crab roe or mustard is considered a delicacy by a lot of "true" crab lovers.

The KOREAN Marts that seem to have taken over our GIANTS, WEGMANS, and SHOPPERS are all very bad!!!! They food is not fresh and tend to go bad really quick. Problem is that these koreans do not care if you get sick. If food is about to spoil they have a sale and they have also been caught changing tags on food so that they do not ahve to throw away there profits, As long as they have your money they dont give a rats ass, All the korean stores around this area are linked to the korean mafia, in some type of fashion.

Dont help fund these terrorist KOREANS!!!

Are you sure you just don't like "foreigners"??
It sure seems like a lot of anger in you post.
In my experience the Asian market are cleaner and have fresher food... less prepackaged preservative laden crap.

Better check the sell-by dates on anything you buy in a Korean market. Those mercenary monkey bastards have no scruples.

I noticed in the big Asian supermarket in Merrifield by the school
that they have half-shelled female crabs for sale alongside the
bushels of live crabs. You can tell they are female because they've
been opened up to expose the roe (which is a delicacy). That's the
red-pink stuff. I think mustard might be a different organ.

Just curious, how did this thread go 18 posts long without a mention of crabs at an Asian massage parlor? I am SEVERELY disappointed in all the FFU cretins who have shirked their duties.
