Would FCPS Schools Start HS Fishing Teams?
Posted by: foodislife ()

Fishing is a great sport especially for HS students who went through much of their early life not participating in other sports. Starting HS fishing teams would be good for students and their are already high schools doing it around the country and even in Virginia. Their is a Virginia State Championship hosted by The Bass Federation and Student Angler Federation (SAF). The grand prize is a $5,000 scholarship and would be very good. Apparently colleges also give scholarships for top anglers to come to their fishing team. I haven't heard of any school in FCPS participating, why aren't they? Does anyone know any attempts in the past to start it? Would the school allow it, there are many precautions set in place by the SAF to provide insurance for the clubs and from on their website it seems to be an affordable club. Here's the link: http://www.highschoolfishing.org/ What do you guys think

Hooks, knives, boats and other assorted dangers.

And it requires that you be outdoors. Out in the SUN. Near WATER! *shudder*

How about chess or dominoes instead?

Would love to see it happen but poster above about sums it up: they're not going take on all that liability, especially considering the ruling class isn't really into that kind of thing.

I think it's a great idea. The only problem is you would have to travel a lot, because the only place nearby where u can hold tournaments is the occoquan or lake anne. The school will allow you to have any club as long as you can prove it's importance and show plans for funding. Personally i wish my school had a bass fishing club

Fishing is not a damn sport!!!!

What's next? Loading grocery carts???? Pushing a broom? Thumb texting gymnastics?

Fishin' is what you do when you have 5-6 hours to waste.

Puh-leaseeeee get this ish out of here. When I want a fish, I just call Mr. Gordon? Or Long John Silvers.

Fishing is for dolts that can't compete at REAL ATHLETICS.

Not gonna happen because of the costs and the VHSL won't stand for it. No. Northern Virginia schools already have a number of esoteric sports like rifle and crew, and they are VHSL sanctioned because they've been around for decades.

Fishing is a club/hobby/way of life NOT a sport. There are still a lot of people who fish but NOVA is not known for that. Maybe Phishing.....

Crew is as Club Sport, not VHSL recognized. Probably because of cost and not every HS has water readily available.

Have not heard about Rifle for YEARS when I was in HS and assume this is a Club Sport if the anti 2nd Amendment folks get going.

Neither is golf, if you don't sweat its not a sport.

Wrong. Crew and rifle are VHSL sanctioned sports. There was a controversy a couple years ago when the VHSL wanted to drop crew from its list of sanctioned sports. Costs for crew and rifle are covered by many school districts, and students can earn varsity letters. (FCPS does not cover any crew costs, while Alexandria Public Schools covers everything.) Ice hockey is not a VHSL sanctioned sport. Neither is ultimate frisbee.

From the Fairfax HS crew website:
"The Fairfax High School (FHS) Crew Club is a Virginia High School League (VHSL) sponsored interscholastic club activity."

This way the school athletic directors get to control the sport. Same with Rifle. ADs have no control over ultimate frisbee.

So where Crew and Rifle listed on VHSL?

Not seeing it.

Correct that FFX pays nothing for Crew it is 100% paid for by the parents from my understanding.

Would be interested to hear if anyone has Rifle anywhere in NOVA.

Golf is a VHSL sport. It also is NOT a club sport.
See the lists/tables for VHSL activities and sports. Club sports fall under VHSL and pay for their own costs (like crew).

I know Gatehouse reads these threads. This is a little off-topic, but I know they will see it here. We are talking about VHSL vs non-VHSL, so this is close enough.

Band is not a VHSL activity. It is a class. They were requiring sports physicals on VHSL forms to participate in Marching Band. How can they do that? How can they use a VHSL form for a non-VHSL deal? You can't use FCPS forms for anything that isn't FCPS sponsored. How can you use VHSL forms for something that isn't VHSL? There is a release in there, etc.

What would really chap your ass is knowing that there are pro anglers out there making much more money than you do. Like millions more.

Any sport listed on the official school activities websites, which the ADs control, is VHSL sanctioned.

Most Northern VA schools still have rife: West Pot, Woodson, Washington-lee, Yorktown, West Springfield, etc. Maryland public schools dropped rifle in the 90s under pressure from various groups. Privates like Landon still have teams.

There's really no sport. The fish does all the work. Now, Synchronized Fishing. That's a real man's sport. Get on the speedos, the nose guards, and you're ready to go.

you'd probably need to do it as a club sport, like crew and rugby are now.

As a varisty sport, not very likely.

Wrong, rugby is not a vhsl sanctioned activity and you will not earn a varsity letter. Crew is.

Well it's clear you guys didn't bother looking into the link or even bother reading other than hs fishing. The programs that people start at their schools are clubs. And through their schools as a club they register with the Student Angler Federation to compete in HS fishing tournaments. I never said it being declared a HS sport. I just wondering if schools would allow for such a club not just kids sitting and talking about fish but actually going out and competing.

Schools around here are allowed paintball clubs, there was a high school division competing at the collegiate national championships. Winning a regional tournament got teams a free trip to Orlando for the event.

Once I went fishing and I consumed two six-packs of Natty Light in 3 hours.

Nothing else happened. Just me and the beer. No fish.

Yep, call that a sport.....!!!!

Anyone can do that. That's easy. The challenge is making it a VHSL sanctioned sport with official varsity status.
