Financing at Carmax
Posted by: Hplar ()

For those who want to pay off their auto loans fast, Carmax financing simply seems evil. Found the following Q&A on their website:

============
7. If I make a payment for more than my monthly payment amount, how will the additional amount be applied to my account?

Any additional amount is applied to future payments, up to the next 3 payments, unless otherwise required by law. Any remaining amounts will be applied to the principal balance owed on your account.

If you have a $100 payment due February 1st, and you send in $500 on February 1st, your payment will satisfy your February 1st $100 payment, your March 1st $100 payment, your April 1st $100 payment, and your May 1 $100 payment. The remaining $100 is applied to your principal account balance, and your next payment will be due June 1st.
============

Just get pre-approved by a local credit union *before* going to Carmax. Can anyone give any additional advice from your past experience with Carmax?

that is the "default policy"

if you don't want payment applied to principle YOU KEEP IT and save it for payments

OR TELL THEM AHEAD OF TIME it is for payments not principle

if it's all over $100 i don't hear EITHER of you jokers

I think the idea is to pay down the principle instead of making more payments and that is why OP is pissed.

You are so stupid...

A financial institution should treat any extra amount you pay today as an additional *principal* payment BY DEFAULT, and that's today's standard. Any financing rule that prevents/manipulates this implementation (Like one I found at Carmax website) is a scam. Explain why you would want your bank to use your extra money for their profit first instead of repaying for your car? You got my point? Probably not...

Off topic. Carmax is actually pretty good when it comes to the quality of cars they sell. Carmax established nice protocols that all of their cars go through before they are put back on the market. The protocols essentially make all the vehicles sold at Carmax "Certified-grade." Every good dealer has an inspection protocol of their own.

On the other hand, Eastern Motors or whatever dealers from the dead-end world are not worth good consumers' time, money, and effort, because they just sell what they got from auctions "AS IS."

I am a 26 year old professional, and I never buy used cars. The best way for me is to lease a car for 2 years. This is how I get a new BMW every 24 months.

I also have never been laid, and have dinner with my mother every Saturday night.

You're such a sucker. You're probably the kind of "professional" that goes to upscale steakhouses, yearns for the sirloin, but because you haven't succeeded in life...settles for the cheeseburger and STILL complains about how expensive it was.

Do you know what kind of people lease cars? People who can't afford to buy cars. Big deal...you have a new BMW every 24 months. Where do you think you are living Butt-scratch, Iowa? Owning...sorry, leasing a BMW is not status here in NOVA. It's just not.

In closing, you will never have anything concrete to show for the money you've plowed into these new every 2 years BMWs. 2 years of payments, turn the car in, 2 more years of payments turn the car in...ad infinitum.

Buy a gently used Accord, save your money and then walk in with your suitcase full of cash in a few years and BUY the BMW, you fucking mope. And unless you've had formal training in Munich...get the fucking extended warranty, too. BMWs are very unreliable cars that perform great when properly maintained. This is not a car you WAIT for shit to break before taking it in.

Young man, a kiddo like you almost always pops up in this kind of auto-related thread. It's very funny because they unanimously mention that they drive BMW. An example is an online Honda Civic review page where someone gives Civic one star claiming his BMW is superior. Let me put it this way: Right now you are just another particle of dust in the air. Can you dig it? You have no control of yourself, notably, your mouth. Hope you grow up and realize one day that the world has no reason to need you; instead, you have to work hard to be needed. It doesn't happen overnight, young man.

You sir are an idiot. I posted that crap about the BMW to see who would bite. You did.

I have something else for you - How would you like to have my sirloin shoved up your ass?

Sort of a bonus for taking the bait.

Awwww...why so mad, brother? I know...we ALL know.

Tell you what...

Why don't you go down to your room....errrr, I mean your parents' basement? Don't worry Mommy will be down soon to smother your genitals with marshmallow fluff while Daddy plays hide the nine iron in your ass and watches you lick your own shit off the end of it. Then you can all watch Leni Riefenstahl films together.

I have purchased four cars at Carmax. Two were paid for in cash, the other two, I financed. I put some money down on the financed purchase, and because I have good credit (and for Carmax, an income they rarely see, or so they tell me), each time they came incredibly close to matching the credit union rate.

I find Carmax to be a decent (but not great) deal because they have a number of low mileage, typically just off lease, cars. It is a great place to get young drivers decent, safe, and affordable transportation. With Carmax, I don't pay for the depreciation which comes with new cars (although I have bought new cars lately too), and am satisfied, but not necessarily ecstatic, with Carmax. I wanted to buy new with my latest purchase but Carmax had a two year old vehicle with 15,000 miles for 30% less than its new counterpart. It just made sense to buy that vehicle.

There are people who are mechanically inclined who know automobiles very well. I am not one of them. These types likely can do better than Carmax in terms of value. Again, not something I can do well.

CarMax is not a buy here pay here used car shop, which only notionally sell cars. What these entities sell is financing, and in particular, high cost, stiff terms financing (some insist on weekly payment). I feel badly for those forced into this corner of the market.

I have found it essential to find an independent and honest car repair shop, too. This likely is more important than anything else.

Once you go BMW or any German auto maker(except maybe VW), you just can't go back. That said, they are expensive and have there shortcomings, I still respect those Jap cars.

Here are my rules for buying a car,

- Must be used, under 5 years old, over 2 years old
- Under 50,000 miles
- I have to be able to pay with cash and it must not be more than 3 months of my gross income.

IMO if you have to finance a car you can't afford it. I have owned many cars over the past 15 years, never have I had a car loan.

What the hell are you going to do when the supply of Dodge Neons and Chevy Cavaliers dries up?

3 months gross for a Walmart employee comes out to about $2200.00

Those two sentences are not necessarily synonymous--if it's 0% financing, better to take the loan (if your credit can take it) and put the money aside, pay it off gradually.

But in general, yeah, agreed.

I used to firmly believe that one should not buy anything that depreciates over time with a loan. I still believe the concept is right in principle. However, auto financing started making sense to me a little because even though you have the ability to pay a car in full by cash, it is still true that you lose a chunk of money in your savings in a day, which could be a risk factor because you never know if you will need $$$ tomorrow. I think auto financing is a reasonable option as a risk avoidance measure. A term doesn't really matter; you just gotta be able to pay off your loan in less than a year by making early payments, say, $1,500/mo. This way, only a few hundred dollars goes to interest (=profit for financial institution), but only a few hundred dollars of insurance cost is not that bad at all if you think this way. Anyone with an average intelligence should get my point why Carmax financing term is a deal breaker. Still, as a used car dealer, Carmax is one of the best places where a risk of you grabbing a junk is essentially non-existent. You just cannot find a steal deal there; you only get a reasonable deal. If you want to minimize risks during your used car shopping, go to Carmax. Just don't finance with them.

Myself buy only used cars in excellent conditions which are typically right off lease, at a FAIR MARKET VALUE, not at a bargain price. It's all about avoiding risks without having to spend too much time on the hunt.

I went to carmax and saw several black people there. That was the deal breaker for me and I left immediately.

Only poor people buy cars from Carmax and only the poorest of the poor finance the purchase.

I am also a fan of paying with cash. However auto financing has its place. There are people on the low end who need reliable and flexible transportation so that they can work, who have the income stream but don't have the cash saved up. For them financing a vehicle on reasonable terms makes sense. Likewise at the high end there are people who could afford to buy the car for cash, but who can come out better off on a cash flow basis by financing it.

The problem comes from the abuse of financing as a way to sell and buy cars that the purchaser cannot really afford. IMO any time the conversation switches from the price of the vehicle to the monthly payment, you are talking about something the buyer should not be purchasing. A $25,000 loan is still a $25,000 loan regardless of the monthly payments. If the loan has to be stretched to 5 years or more to make it affordable, that delays the time the buyer can start saving for the next car.

This country was built on financing purchases of many items. Autos, Trucks, Furniture, Braces for a child's teeth, not to mention the whole real estate thing. Middle class folks can have items today, and pay over time. The problem is not with the borrowers, but with the lenders or bankers. The shit that went bad in 2008, the S&L crap years ago, and rumor has it that credit cards will be the next big thing for the Gov't to bail out greedy lenders. Just another way that they will exploit the little people - AGAIN

I don't know about the finance department as I've not financed a car since I was in my 20s but I've bought and sold about 6 cars from carmax and they rock. They are not a rip off. Cars have low mileage very clean and no haggling which I love. Everything is very straightforward. I highly recommend them. And no it's not only poor people buying cars there. Sheesh

Fairfax has better car dealerships than Falls Church or Tyson's Corner. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a goddamn retard. Who probably voted for Hillary. Also, what is going on with Fairfax Circle near the Jeep dealership? Is Arthur Treacher's still there? And I hear they are closing down the Breezeway motel there. I had some good times there. And what about Kamp Washington in Fairfax? Anybody remember that?

Is it an old video of the trolley line that used to run through Fairfax? Or is it a video of the Howard Johnsons's off route 1 near Alexandria? Love those old-time Fairfax videos.

Anybody remember the 3 chefs?
