The attacker was a nutcase who tried to carry out a "citizen's arrest" upon Cowen as he lectured. Cowen "fended off" the attack by fleeing from the classroom in fear for his life, bolting down a hallway, and trying to hide in a women's restroom. The attacker was not far behind however and burst into the restroom through a makeshift barricade, whereupon a struggle ensued, during which Cowen was pepper-sprayed before help could arrive. No motive for such bizarre behavior was forthcoming at the time, but it was later reported that the attacker was angry at Cowen for having hacked his computer and sexually harassed him. Prior to the attack, the two principals had never met.
