Excellent point. No one wants to click from an email to a web page, then to a story. They want to read a sentence or two about each story in their email, then click to go to that story for more.
Today is a good example. Patch has a number of stories online that many people will not read because the little bit of information in the daily email is not enough to engage them:

Virginia State Police: Those Flashing Lights Were on Fake Cop Car

Imagine if each of these headlines was followed by a sentence or two about the story... which restaurant closed, where the new Wegmans will be, etc. That would cause more clicks to the article, and once there, clicks to other articles, and even (gasp) clicks to the ads that fund the whole thing.
They also need to get past the idea that Burke, Fairfax, Annandale, Fairfax Station, etc. are their own communities deserving their own Patch. It's Fairfax County (like FxU) or Northern Virginia (like Inside NoVa) or Metro DC.
