Why did the weathermen lie?
Date: January 26, 2015 02:32PM

Forget the fact that I don't want to go to school, the bullshit weathermen really said we would get around 5 inches, then 3, then 1-3 and literally no snow. Why are they not being called out?

I agree. Finally someone else is on the same page. Like I've been saying... Why do we all have our panties up in a bunch about FCPS making a right or wrong call on the weather like our lives depend on it? THEY are not the meteorologists, it's the meteorologists job to predict the weather. Not FCPS. FCPS can only listen to the weather experts and determine a decision based on what they hear. I'm surprised everyone gives FCPS so much heat when the heat should be directed at the meteorologists. If FCPS cancels because they are listening to a weather expert that a storm is supposedly coming, and a storm never comes, that's on the weather experts for not doing their jobs, not FCPS. From here on out, we all need to unite. We need to reconsider the disagreements we have with FCPS and find out who we really should be going after. I say we nominate a leader and start an advocate's group. We have the numbers. In the meantime, just heard we could be looking at over 10" of accumulation throughout the evening. Let's stick together, guys. Thoughts?

It was 50 degrees yesterday. The ground is still warm. No chance we were gonna have accumulating snow today.

OK, this may be a stupid question but.....

....if you don't want to go to school then why not just quit? Well, not technically quit - legally you have to attend until age 18. However, Virginia is notoriously lax as far as homeschooling. You fill out one sheet of paper, have one of your parents sign it, and file by August. A school official comes by once or twice a year and makes sure you are "making educational progress". They basically just want to make sure you can read, write, add and subtract. You don't have to meet grade standards, you don't have to take end of the year tests - it's basically a big joke.

So if you don't want to go to school, and you can convince one of your parents to just stay home and read what you want to read, or draw, or practice music, or whatever interests you? Do it. If you decide later that you do need a high school diploma? Just get a GED.

And if your parents are the ones who won't let you quit school? Well, complain to them. You never know though - if you really don't want to go to school, and you would prefer to focus elsewhere, and you can convince your parents you can educate yourself? It's worth a try. School is not for everyone. If you TRULY hate it, or feel you are not getting anything out of it? Or you are bored and would prefer to educate yourself? You aren't alone. Lots of very intelligent educate themselves at home. They skip all the BS, and focus on the stuff they love. Pass the GED when you are 18. Problem solved.

Here is the paper you would need to file.

Good question. I hate school with a passion, but I actually want to do something with my life(doctor, lawyer, professional athlete, actor) and that's hard to do with a home schooling education. I'll end up homeless if I drop out or end up working minimum wage and living in a shitty springfield apartment. Never fulfilling my bright dream of leaving Virginia.

Depending on how old you are, and how well you have done with standardized testing, have you considered dual enrollment?

George Mason just graduated a 16 year last year I think. NoVA also does dual enrollment. There is also the CHSP. That is the California version of a GED. You have to be 16 (on the test date, you can register for the exam while still 15) and you have to have I think 150 days of enrollment in 10th grade.

You do NOT have to be a resident of CA to take it. People go there, take it, go home, and if they pass - their paperwork is mailed to them. At that point - you can just flat out enroll in college. https://www.chspe.net/registration/

Here's the other option. It's a bit more pricey, but you can do it all at home on a computer, it counts as a real school (it's a private school at the high school level) and you get to skip all the stupid high school drama and volunteer requirements.

Warning. It's challenging. Assume that whatever grade class you sign up for? It is, on average, about a year ahead and that much harder than your typical neighborhood high school. If you are smart and don't mind working hard, you'll love it. But it's not great for average students. We used them for 4 years for our kids. VERY challenging work - but they needed the challenge.

Hope it works out for you.

Actually I'm in the 10th grade and I'm 15. I've never been held back and acing all my classes, so please get your facts straight. I do know you're a pathetic white man that preys on kids to make himself feel better and who makes less than 100k which is less than both my mom and dad haha.

Weatherpeople deal in percentages and have to forecast weather for a large area. If they had to pinpoint it to just your specific city, street, house, parent's basement, etc. the percentages would all change.

If I say there is a 100% chance of snow precipitation somewhere on the planet tomorrow, I would be correct almost 100% of the time.

Just chill out and live in the weather the Earth throws at you. Weather reports are kind of like hints.

Note: I tried to tell a former boss that there would be a 25% chance of my weekly reports being ready tomorrow. That is why he is now my former boss.

Hang in there. I hated high school too (boring, people teaching me stuff I already knew, etc) but it does eventually end.

If you get TOO bored, there is always this.

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/jetstream/

It's NOAA's online meteorology school. I have no idea if it's any good.

I HAVE heard excellent things about MIT's free online courses. Same stuff as MIT, it's free. You don't get course credit, but if you just want to learn.....

You can continue hating school all the way through college, or you can change your mindset and determine to get the most out of it that you can - both in terms of knowledge and opportunity. Your call. Sounds like you don't have to worry about paying for school, which puts you way ahead of a lot of kids - who would kill to be in your position.

Seriously, learning can be fun. College can be fun, but it's really what you make it.

But you are very welcome, and I wish you the very best of luck with your studies and your future. Hang in there, it gets better.

Actually thank you so much for not being a dickhead like the rest of visitors of this site. My problem with education is we're wasting time learning stuff we really don't need. English and History are great, but math and science aren't needed after elementary school. We should learn other things too, like how to raise kids and pay bills instead of those being electives that you can't take because of language requirements.

My parents can definitely afford college, but money isn't a must. My sister's friend goes to Columbia (cheated on SAT) and she's poor but gets financial aid.

What I want to know is which weatherman were you watching that said we were getting 5" or 10"?
Fairfax county was always in the 1"-3" slot that I saw and by last night they were going with the lighter side.

Who the fuck likes school? They give you useless information to see who actually will try and survive in a competitive world after high school.

It's not that school is trying to measure your intelligence through putting useless info in your head it's a measure of work ethnic.

But school is really important. Reading, writing, arithmetic. But I think after you learn reading, writing, arithmetic, that’s it. But what they tend to is teach you reading, writing, and arithmetic then teach you reading, writing, and arithmetic again then again then again, just make it harder and harder, just to keep you busy. And that’s where I think they messed up.

There should be a class on drugs. There should be a class on sex education, a real sex education class. Not just pictures and diaphragms and unlogical terms and things like that. There should be a drug class, there should be sex education, there should be a class on scams, there should be a class on religious cult, there should be a class on police brutality, there should be a class on aparthy, there should be on racism in america, there should be a class on why people are hungry, but there not, there’s class on gym, you know, physical education, let’s learn volleyball. because one day…you know…there’s classes like algebra where I’ve yet to go to a store and gone xy+2 and give me my y change back thank you. I think you can let me out, I’ve lived alone by myself. And the things that helped me were the things I learned from my mother, from the streets.

Reading has helped me, I mean, schools taught me reading, which is, I love. Reading, writing and arithmetic, that’s it. Like foreign languages, I think they’re important, but I don’t think they should be required. Because…actually they should be teaching you English. And then teaching you how to understand double-talk, politicians double-talk. Not teaching you how to understand French, and Spanish and German. When am I going to Germany! I can’t afford rent in America. How am I going to Germany. This is what I mean by the basics aren’t the basics for me.

I'm not asking about why you assumed I was white, but the trash part.

Oh, the irony. I'm just one of many. My entire family is a bunch of computer geeks. Not all computer geeks are male. Granted, I chose a geek and had computer geek kids with him, but not all computer geeks are guys.

Thanks for the smile. And yes, classes on raising kids and being a responsible citizen are valuable. Not slamming math and science (I love both) but raising kids and being a good citizen are core skills too.

"There should be a class on drugs. There should be a class on sex education, a real sex education class. Not just pictures and diaphragms and unlogical terms and things like that. There should be a drug class, there should be sex education, there should be a class on scams, there should be a class on religious cult, there should be a class on police brutality, there should be a class on aparthy, there should be on racism in america,"

Amen. This is so true. The reason schools don't have classes on these things? Is too many parents are uncomfortable with the idea of their children knowing about this stuff.

They are also uncomfortable admitting that it even exists.

I teach my kids this stuff at home - I know the schools won't. Yes, my kids have read articles on meth labs, how they get busted (by the smell) and what meth does to you, long term. I knew the schools wouldn't teach them what a jerk Columbus was, so I did. I got them books on Rosa Parks, b/c I knew the schools wouldn't cover that either.

Sadly, many kids in religious cults ARE homeschooled - to keep them even MORE ignorant, but yeah, it would be nice to see it covered in schools. I'm not holding my breath on that one though.

The day FCPS teaches about sex workers and STDs and how to navigate both dangerous situations? That will be a day to celebrate. It needs to happen, but again, I'm not holding my breath on that one either.

Not anymore. We had them in a virtual public school for the first few years. They taught themselves how to read/do math before they were old enough for kindy. But they were REALLY immature. And they were rude. Not mean, just like "way too honest" rude. They had no filter.

Once they grew up a bit, we switched them to a regular public school. We lucked out. They skipped them a grade, and gave them more advanced work, and access to computers.

I did NOT enjoy homeschooling, don't recommend it unless it's a last-case option. I only did it until they were ready to go to school without horrifying everyone. I think most people who do it? They are doing it for the wrong reasons. The ones I can agree with? It's special needs, or gifted - or......both.

We lucked out. They still say that school is too easy, but they got good teachers and they are allowed to work ahead, etc.

Nope. I'm Priapus. I was just fucking with the kid. She/it doesn't belong on the site anyway.

Sorry, kid. I was too harsh.

Another middle aged Mom. It comes naturally.

Honestly, you're too young to know what you'll need.

Not necessarily - especially if you want to be a doctor. I took the first programming class ever offered in my high school. Only girl in the class. Had no idea what I was getting into, but I loved every second of it (despite the guys trying to bully me). I was a language major in college, but I also studied anatomy and physiology, computer science, accounting, and other less conventional subjects. I eventually got a MS in IT. You really just never know where life will lead you.

Not sure what you mean about the language requirements, but otherwise you are absolutely correct! There really should be more emphasis on real world life skills in high school. It would be especially helpful for kids around here who, frankly, have no idea what they're about to face in the real world.

Well, that's not exactly a role model. In any case, financial aid can mean loans - which need to be paid back. Far as I can tell, debt is the norm in college, not the exception, except perhaps around here where kids are exceptionally lucky (aka spoiled).

Bottom line - you can choose to enjoy learning, or you can resent it. It's a lot more interesting if you enjoy it.

Well, you have two middle aged moms cheering you on. It could be worse.

Seriously, hang in there. Take it day by day, it will be ok.

Don't Waste Opportunity - that was exactly how I felt about drafting classes and electronics! I was the only girl in both classes. Both classes changed my life, and after the first year the guys stopped harassing me.

I took courses in early childhood education too, though (my high school had an on-site daycare for teen age moms who came back to high school) and those classes were also VERY useful.

Try lots of stuff - you never know what you will need.

But high school is really, really difficult for some kids. It was constant misery for me, but it does end eventually.

A kindred soul! Funny you mention drafting...when I was in high school all the boys took drafting and the girls took home economics. Although I loved home ec, I begged to be allowed to take drafting instead. The school eventually let me (first girl ever), but the peer pressure was so strong that I had to drop out. Still regret it. If there are any guys still reading this, I hope that they realize that we were the first feminists - not wild eyed zealots, just women looking for an equal shot at life.

Drafting was awesome. I was lucky and had a good teacher. Also, a junior in the class was nice to me. He was a jock (a smart one) so eventually I made friends with his friends and I took 3 years of drafting. Those were some of the good memories I had in HS.
