Federal prosecutors sought a sentence of more than 10 years for McDonnell. The judge game him only two years, hoping that would be low enough to avoid an appeal.

Prosecutors are concerned that the appeals court will find that the trial judge defined an “official act” too broadly, which could cause a reversal of the conviction. They are also worried that Jonnie Williams' testimony, provided under a broad immunity agreement, might not have been entirely truthful. Such a finding would nullify the agreement and Williams would not testify in a second trial due to 5th Amendment concerns. Without Williams, their case collapses.

The appeal is expected to take up to two years.

You are both partially correct. To remain free, the judge had to find that all these conditions were true:

- the appeal raises a substantial question of law or fact that “if decided in favor of the accused” is “important enough” to warrant reversal or a new trial.

- that McDonnell is not a flight risk or a danger to others.

- that the appeal is not just a delay tactic.

Of the Eastern District of Va. soon as Jan 2017 rolls around with a new GOP President . After his convictions have been reversed by the higher court this summer.

Pays pretty good I hear and Bob is a former A.G of Va. It would be nice to See US Marshal Bob McDonnell putting the cuffs on the Fast One. Remember the Fast One still has a couple years to screw up!

Rob in his early days running for office in cheap (but not too cheap) sweats when it's way too cold to run in sweats (unless you live and breath chicago).
