Maryland has license plate scanners like many other states. Va has been allowing Maryland access to the Va concealed firearm permit database. Zealot police in Maryland have scanned Va plates and others and pulled people over just because they have a CCW permit and begin a search for a gun in the vehicle even though there are none to be found. This bill which has passed the Va Senate by almost a 2/3 vote will stop Virginia from provideing Maryland police CCW permit information because of the abuses. Maryland "The Free State" does not recognize Va CCW permits, many states do and Va will provide the CCW information to those states that do.
In no way does any CCW information help a police officer making a traffic stop
"safer" as all police in this country now conduct traffic stops as though the occupants of a stopped vehicle are armed as standard procedure.
This bill now will be sent to the House of Delegates and is expected to pass.
It will be seen if Gov McAuliffe of Va. supports the people of Virginia and wants to protect them from abuse or will he follow the Democrat party line and support the State of Maryland to contine to abuse Virginians when the bill comes to his desk.
Shame on the Democrat Va Senate members who voted against this bill, against the people of the State they represent and voted instead to continue the abuse by the State of Maryland.

To my knowledge, CCW permits are public information, just like any other type of goverment issued license. All it would take is a FOIA request to get the info.
How big of an issue is this, anyway? It sounds a right-wing Republican/NRA-fueled solution looking for a problem.

The problem is Virginia providing Maryland the CCW info.after some Maryland cops plate reader read a Va license plate. Not after they pull someone over for wrong doing, just a license plate read from a scanner and they see the CCW info and they pull the person over on a wild goose gun search for a gun the person left at home back in Virginia.
Nothing in this bill allows anyone to carry a gun anywhere.

Although there have been some notorious, but limited, incidents in NJ on this issue, is there any data to support the concerns with MD's use of VA's data in this manner? The reason I ask is that scanning a plate for CHP is not probable cause for a Terry stop and would violate the Fourth Amendement. I imagine the case would be dismissed in court because of that element. Moreover, if the state repeated these action, you could make a nice civil rights case out of it. So, if the bill fails, a bunch of us with CHPs could circle the Beltway following all the rules until we got stopped and then take a collective case against MD to Federal court and make some dough! Thanks O'Malley!

Bill SR 948 refuses to provide CCW information to any state that does not recognize Virginias concealed firearms permit so New Jersy would not receive any CCW info as well.
As stated in this thread this bill does not effect officer safety, as all police treat each traffic stop as if the people in the car are possibly armed.

Don't forget if for some reason you are driving through maryland with your weapon, make sure it is stored in a locked container, unloaded and separate from the ammunition.
Keep in mind that you need to be traveling through the state, i.e VA to WV or PA or something, or going straight from home to a repair shop or shooting sports event inside of maryland or straight back home from said places.

You are a fucking moron. The VA CCW permit is only allowed in VA and the other states that have a reciprocity with VA. MD does not so MD does not need access to that information. I too was stopped by MSP for "speeding" in good ole PGC, and was inquired by the cop on the location of my pistol. I told him it was it was somewhere he will never find. He asked to search me. I said no. He called for back up. Three showed up. Now four asked to search me. I asked if they had a Terry case. They would not answer. After repeating their names out loud to memorize I was let go. Those fuckers followed me to the WW bridge. They got the one finger salute once over water.
My gun was locked up at home since I cannot carry in MD, and yes I am a former VA cop.

And Not in The Drivers compartment.Locked up in the trunk of the car or camper shell or toolbox of a truck. No Camper shell or toolbox on a truck you better keep it at home. Or in the engine compartment.

If Gov McAuliffe represents the law abiding citizens of Virgina, Or is he just a party line hack that will defend a few Bad Cops in Maryland, cops that pull Virgina citizens over with concealed firearm permits after reading a license plate scan and make a stop for speeding 56 in a 55 for the purpose of tossing their car looking for guns that were left back home in Virginia as you can not carry a concealed gun in Maryland with a Va permit.
This bill is not a "Gun Rights Bill" It is about protecting law abiding Virginia citizens against abuse.
It does not allow any one to carry a gun anywhere
It does not expand any gun rights. Nor does it pose any threat against any law officers. As they treat any traffic stop as if the persons are armed.
The word is he will veto this bill passed by 2/3rd of the Va House and a majority in the Va Senate.
The Gov does not realize it but this simple bill will define his legacy as Gov. Of Va. And not a veto of the other two.
There are two other gun bills that he may veto that do expand Gun Rights, one to allow felons who have had their gun rights restored in other states allowed to own guns in Va.
The other allows concealed firearms permit people to have a loaded rife or shotgun in their car despite hunting seasons.

McAullife vetoed the bill today. He stated the need for law officers to have the information. Totally Bogus. There were no concealed firearm alerts just a few years ago. And today see what a cop does when they approach your car if your stopped. They treat everyone today as if your armed. Need for Md police to know? Va law officers would still know if some one has a gun permit as well as other states that allow Va Concealed permits, just not Maryland, NJ, NY and the others that caused the problem . Democrats in Fairfax made the totally stupid arguement that these other states would return Va's favor and not let Va have info on gun permits in these other states. Who Cares? This is why any ALPR technology should be strictly regulated for any LE. Obviously, street cops shouldn't be allowed to have ALPR cameras on thier vehicles. All it's meant for is to infringe on the rights of us citizens.

my USA gun policiy is never register a weapon with government workers
they will just abuse the "point of authority" to the maximum
