A Fairfax County man has been charged with possessing child pornography after several local youth hockey players were solicited online by someone posing as a 13-year-old girl, according to Virginia State Police and a search warrant.
Timothy J. Bodenheimer, 27, of Fairfax Station was arrested last week after state police served a search warrant at his home. He is facing 10 counts of possession of child pornography.
State police launched an investigation in December after several parents reported that their children were being approached online by a suspicious individual, according to the search warrant filed in Fairfax County. Each of the solicited children plays hockey for local middle schools or youth teams.
In one instance, a boy received a friend request through Instagram from a user claiming to be a 13-year-old girl who played hockey at the Kettler ice complex in Arlington, according to the search warrant.
After conversing on Instagram, the user suggested switching to Snapchat, a service where messages are deleted after a short period, according to the search warrant.
But during a conversation, the boy inadvertently turned on the Snapchat video feature and saw that he was conversing with an adult male. When the boy questioned what was going on, the user said a teacher had confiscated the girl’s phone. The user then sent him a picture of a 12-year-old girl in her bra and panties in front of a mirror. The boy’s parents learned of what was going on, became suspicious and contacted law enforcement authorities.
In late December, a detective from the Northern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC) posed as a 12-year-old boy and engaged the user in conversation via another messaging service, KIK.
Over several days, the user sent the detective 13 images and videos of what appeared to be child pornography, according to the search warrant. The accounts were eventually traced to Bodenheimer’s Fairfax Station address.
Bodenheimer is not facing any charges related to soliciting the boys, but state police said the investigation is continuing. State police said anyone affiliated with youth hockey in Northern Virginia who has information about Bodenheimer should contact ICAC by e-mail at novaicac @vsp.virginia.gov.
