where's the best 4th of July fireworks in the county?

We've always gone to see the fireworks in DC... but this year
we don't really feel like fighting traffic with hundreds of
thousands of other people

so....

where's the best 4th of July fireworks in the county?

Thanks!

Chantilly National has pretty impressive ones on July 3rd - you have to be a member to get into the club, but most people park along Braddock by the intersection of Braddock/Kimanna.

I havent been in years, but the city of fairfax used to have a good display as well.

You are kidding, right? There will be NO seats at Foggy Bottom. How many trains will you have to wait through? Might as well walk over to Rosslyn and wait there.

The DC fireworks are outstanding and before 9/11 we parked somewhere near Lady Bird Johnson park, enjoyed a picnic dinner and called it a night. We have friends in Rosslyn with rooftop access, but they are out of the country.

The fireworks in Fairfax City are pretty nice, but again, the crowds are insane the idea of catching a shuttle at 7pm and waiting for two hours isn't really enticing either.

Our reliable fallback is Fairfax Country Club. Park along 123 and walk in. You also get a (partial) view of both Fairfax City and Centreville if you pick the right spot.

Of course, we end the night with a neighborhood display that is nearly as nice as any of the local shows. A quick trip to Phantom Fireworks near Breezewood and $500 buys enough fireworks for an awesome 20-30 minute display.

You fairfax people complain way too much!

There never any seats on the orange line, if you ride the metro - you would know that. I usually get 2-3rd train and in 20 minutes I am at Vienna.

Damn good display in CVille HS, closed 3 years ago after an accident. People would sit in the stands and on field, and they shot em off at braddock park.

Find a roof in DC (parkin garage) or on the shore of VA.

I reccomend the FFX City show. A shitload of people and cops, just get there early and tailgate.

Does FFX City still do them at FFX HS? I remember parking at Fairfax ice arena with friends a long time ago- and we had a perfect view.

One place I sometimes ended up was at the top of the Landmark Plaza parking garage in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County. You can see several different fireworks displays from that vantage point.

4th of July events in town

After doing a search, I found a pretty good list of local fireworks schedules for downtown and some surrounding areas at About.com. If you go to page 3, it gives a decent list of some of the Virginia fireworks, if anyone's gonna be going to any local places as opposed to the madhouse that is DC.

http://dc.about.com/od/specialevents/a/4thofJuly.htm

I also read on there that they're doing the Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the Mall in the days prior to the 4th. Anyone know of any other activities/festivals happening in the next couple of days?

On the Metro, Yes it is crowded on the 4th after the fireworks.

BUT... by accident one time we walked a stop or two before the main Federal Triangle and Malls stops and were amazed that nobody was in the station and the trains bare. We walked right on to the train and got seats.

Make sure you walk to stations before the crowded stops, not after Which ever direction your going walk the opposite way to the station. ha ha ha

If you go to a crowded Metro stop expect a 15-20 minute wait.

I heard it was an accident, and that's what I figured. I was at the show, and after about 10 minutes or so, they just stopped. It was supposesed to be a 15-20 minute show. People start leaving, I hear some sirens, and they start up again in about 15 minutes to finish up.

***

In DC I saw an ambulance every 30 mins our so. Probably some guy got heat stroke.

Dude, that sounds like afternoon rush hour on Metro, especially on a 90-degree day.
