Fairfax County supervisors pick a fight with library supporters

Bulova says the community groups, not the library, should be audited. Then says FCPL is doing just fine, thank you. Prove it. Work with the community. Bulova: stop behaving like the COO of a corporation.

Apparently some of the money is REALLY going to an audit of a volunteer group.

Well assfuck, you wouldn't have to pay more taxes if you didn't have a school system that spends your current taxes however they want to include a bloated administration. A school system that asks for disproportionate increases each budget cycle way above any other county agency. A system that plays on the stupidity of the very people who are taxed to support it.

Then tell us about it, asshole. The KKK was a volunteer group as well, from what I've been told. Is that the sort of group you are talking about? Come on, put your cards on the table, or are you just too fucking embarrassed now to do that?

It would also be useful if FCPS would start working with the community and tell us why their buses won't start. There are never any specifics, but apparently volunteer groups have to be audited for their specifics.

As far as the county goes, we are left to "guess" at what is going on and then we get berated for guessing. Well, just tell us the truth then. We know you're not perfect and that's okay. You look worse when you cover all these things up. We can't solve problems by saying "we are great" day in and day out. You're not fooling anyone.

I was talking about the Friends of the Library group (a very dangerous group here in FFX County). Did you read the article?? Bulova wants to audit them.

All the library assets need to be digitized and go online. Close all the branches, sell the assets, fire all the library staff and administration and hire one web administrator.

Libraries have just become de facto homeless camps during the day for seedy people needing to get their porn on or post anti-government rants on local discussion boards.

Oh, blow me, douchebag! Worthless fucking "bloated administration" bullshit is a sure sign of a know-nothing pre-programmed goober right-wing dumbfuck. You never ran shit. You don't know shit. You don't know anything at all about administration or any other budget category. You are just a worthless horse's ass and pointless piece of shit.

Either move or kill yourself, asshole. FCPS has been seriously underfunded at both the county and state levels for years. Cuts the system absorbed in order to play its part in dealing with the Great Recession (that idiot right-wing goober economics plunged us into) have never been made up. Instead, anti-tax morons try to make those cuts part of the baseline even as the demands on the system continue to increase. The schools that played such a key role in the economic rebirth of Fairfax County are now left bleeding and in danger of slipping from strategic-plus to strategic-minus. Ignorant goober fucktards like you are of course just mainlining more worthless TEA Party nonsense, so you have no fucking clue at all about any of it. Instead, you are just another compromised and completely worthless assfuck. You can just go bugger off with your stupid downscale goober dick-brained notions. Such an unhelpful asswipe!

Your civil discourse has changed many minds here on FFU. Congratulations and thank you.

Also, Sharon Bulova may be tired of these groups and their criticisms, but she will do no good by threatening them. Unless there is reason to believe that they are engaged in illegal activities (and she should tell us what she suspects), an audit is not a good way to spend public money.

1. Communities need real, brick-and-mortar libraries. Online resources and ebooks are great, but are not a substitute. Libraries are as basic a county-level service as schools and courts.

2. An audit of FCPL should focus not only on how the system manages its funds, but should also focus on how the system's leadership manages its operations and defines its core mission, and whether that definition is in line with the needs of the Fairfax County community.

3. Stop complaining about high taxes. Fairfax County residents pay far less in real property taxes than their immediate neighbors do. For the size of our county, the size of the unincorporated parts of the county, the ratio of renters to owners, and the size of the county's core operations, we should be paying a far higher share of taxes on average. Consider the following real property tax rates in Fairfax, Montgomery, and Loudoun counties:

Fairfax County: 1.090 (http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dta/realestatetax_taxrates.htm)
Montgomery County: 1.226536 (http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/Finance/Resources/Files/2014realproperty.pdf)
Loudoun County: 1.155 (http://www.loudoun.gov/index.aspx?NID=1922)

Everyone but right-wing total asshole dumbfucks with an IQ less than 50 already knows why buses don't start when it's fucking five degrees outside. What an Issa-like childish little assfuck you are! Gimme some more of that Benghazi, why don't you, you giant fucking gerbil!

Every one actually able to lift a finger knows that FCPL is now -- as it always has been -- transitioning to keep up with changing needs and changing technologies. The meddling of jerkwad right-wing "populist" groups is not at all helpful. Discovering that the system pulls books that haven't been checked out in two years and discards books that are so damaged or out of date that people simply won't accept them as gifts is hardly Citizen-of-the Year level stuff unless your only real goal is to whine and make a pain in the ass of yourself. Then I suppose maybe it is.

I agree that Fairfax taxes are reasonable, however you need to factor in the average price of a house (because that affects the total tax bill). The mil rates are higher in Loudoun because the house values are lower (yet infrastructure costs are not lower). Their total tax bill could be similar to Fairfax's (given a house of equal square footage and amenities).

I'm not sure about how Montgomery compares in total household tax bill because it's a different state. They may not have personal property tax there (or a similar tax structure for water/sewer, trash, phones, etc.). The comparison has to include more than just the mil rate on real estate. Also, food is not taxed in Maryland (in VA it is taxed at 2.5 percent).

If the decisions are made for practical reasons and people do not agree with them, they need to be explained in a way that does not politicize or attack people. Couching your explanations in extremist rhetoric makes you sound like a "jerkwad right-wing populist". Take a chill pill and learn how to behave. You sound like a lot of fun to be around.

Yes, the money-wasting trouble-makers du jour. Being a "volunteer group" does not convey any sort of beatification of a group's purposes or programs.

Why should they not be audited? They accept donations of county-owned resources and then sell them. Where's the money trail on all that? How do we know that these funds are not being funneled to "islamist" charities unless we audit the fuckers?

She will do no good by paying them any other sort of attention either. They are just self-idolizing populist assfuck-bots. They go from one meeting to another and petulantly whine over completely stupid shit. They serve no useful intellectual purpose or function whatsoever.

You're joking, right? They sell property that the County has donated to them. The amount and uses of the proceeds from such activity should automatically be audited. What a fucking goober asshole troll you are!

You don't know what they are doing unless you do an audit.
Are you saying the libraries let these people sell public property "we" have given them and kept the money to do whatever with? Why? Why are "we" giving them public property? Why are "we" funding a private group? If these people love the libraries, let them work the book sales and have the money go into a county account.

Suspect subdued at Reston Library, Officers had to use riot baton to subdue suspect. Suspect was foaming at mouth, notify animal control possible rabies case. over

"Friends of the library" sell used Fairfax County library books and other donated books people bring to the libraries for them. These people organize the books and set them out in sales areas. Library staff collect money from the sales at the main check ins. The money is supposed to benefit the libraries. Some times " friends" actually sell the books at certain large advertised sales. The "friends " help the libraries with their donated time in the handleing of the books. The libraries are helped by many volunteers at all the libraries that do many tasks other then these book sales. The amount of money collected can be large at times so yes a audit is not something that should be a big deal ,that is for the county to request it to make sure where the money is going, but its not something I would expect a Board Chair to get into a pissing contest in public over either.

Easy solution... as a source/use of funds, that also should be part of the library audit.

Then they can move on to FCPS and the rest.

I've lived here since the late '60s. How about you? My wife and I did do some serious scouting about for a suitable place to retire. Mediterranean, Caribbean, Mexico, West Coast, Hawaii. But nothing really measured up. We can easily afford it, so we're just hanging out here with family and friends for the duration. Virtually anything one could want is either here or close by, so there's really not much reason to move anywhere else. Unless you're some crash-and-burn failure here. In that case, you may want to just paint a big "L" on your forehead and mosey on back to whatever one-horse town you came from.

Yeah, if I were a 70 year old retiree trying to funnel money to an Islamist group I would join the Friends of the Library and try to pilfer some old books to sell.

Way to pee all over yourself asswipe. Target is known to be posting from a seven-figure home in a seven-figure neighborhood located in one of the more upscale areas of one of NoVa's most upscale regions.

I can assure you that the wealthy do a lot of whatever they want. The fact that you don't know anything about that doesn't change one whit of it. After better than 40 years working on it, we've gotten very good at living here. Friends and family are here. So are professional and charitable networks. We can afford to live wherever we want. We and many others in our shoes choose to retire here. Once you pathetic wage-slaves get off the roads, it's all good here.

Nope you can't.

Sorry that you'll end your miserable life stuck here.

You know, the only place that really came close was the south shore of Kauai. Charming little town of Ko-loa just a quick ride from Poipu Beach. In the end, we just decided it was too far away from everything. Really nice to visit. But that was the extent of it.

If you weren't just an old man stuck in suburbia with his money tied up in an over-priced house, then you could afford to have both. But you are. So you can't. Sorry.

dumb ass

#1 libraries are NOW a way for gov workers to hork cash

#2 are a way publishers can sell worthless books for high prices

#3 whenever a spic kicks a whitey out of town, which is frequently

a ton of books gets donated. they have so many they throw them away

some jackass from Washington State has been using library books for recycling waste

yea underfunded.

p.s. chantilly was chartered as a technical library, they never did fund any technical books and the money was all stolen - only books that ever got in the library were used books people didn't want

Yeah, cause you'd much rather be sitting here posting on FFXU in dreary gray 20 degree weather for months than looking out over Waimea or Na Pali. No hyphen in Koloa btw. Probably trying to hard and confusing that with the spelling of Po'ipu you old poser. Figures that you might be looking there while using your Disney time share exchange though since you can't afford anything up around Kilauea or elsewhere nicer.

Sharon Bulova wants the libraries torn down. This is what she needs the space for:

1) Trolley car stops.

2) Turf field setup.

3) Meditation centers run by Tara Brach and friends.

4) Lodging for the Boosterthon people when they are in town.

Bulova needs to be thrown out of office, Ed Clay needs to be fired. His job is to do what the people want, not what he "thinks" a librarian does. If he does not want to answer to the constituents and taxpayers, let him go to work for Ocwen.

Yes, pretty bad off alright. Nearly 60% of those seven figures is equity. You'll never get there.

That's correct. We put them both on the scales and NoVa was the winner.

> No hyphen in Koloa btw.

That's a macron, but FFXU won't swallow macrons. Because Koloa with and without the macron mean two different things, it's typical to use it when you mean the town. Other diacriticals in words like Poipu, Kauai, and Hawaii are rarely used except when writing in Hawaiian.

Left-most unit in the building on the right below. You have to know people. Obviously, we do.

I wake up every morning and pinch myself. My beautiful house is still here. The beautiful grounds still shimmer through the expansive windows. What a long way to have come since then.

No, it's nice for me and the others in my neighborhood to be able to live where and as we do, but otherwise it's just a bit of irony to stuff into the face of moron goobers who resort to attacks such as "drunken homeless guy at a library workstation". There are lots of moron goobers out there of course, and they get themselves painted into corners quite a lot. With their limited intellects, the occurrence of such foolish attempts at personal attack is not all that uncommon.

> Because you're just another upper middle class

As noted, we could afford to live almost anywhere. We toured and evaluated candidate locations over seven or eight years, and came to the studied conclusion that there's no place like home. There still isn't.

Again for the hard of hearing, it is the servers at FFXU that render the macron as a trailing dash. Poipu is meanwhile a single word and it is spelled the same in all its meanings -- with diacritical marks omitted unless one is writing in Hawaiian.

> A condo? lol

Yes, a condo. And gazing longingly at the picture above is as close as you and the other losers here will ever get to it. Not really suitable as a permanent residence though. Had we decided to retire there, a house in town would have been the way to go.

There is at least one, and he is sitting in front of this very keyboard making it go. It burns your materialistic little butt that I've ended up with so much more than what you will ever have. That's life, dummy. The winners beat out the losers. Deal with it.

> What your continual need to boast about yours

I don't need to boast at all. As above, it's merely a "thwack the goobers in the face" thing. I don't mention wealth otherwise. You join the goober club (as you have), and you get some of it too. Eat your heart out, e-boy. You have no alternative.

Not hardly. The sun was shining this morning, meaning that the grounds were shimmering through the expansive windows even more beautifully today than yesterday. Remaining hillocks of snow were as ice floes floating in the green of a polar sea. I again walked into my stunning kitchen but immediately noticed a shortfall in the sound of birds singing around the feeders. They'd eaten all the seed since sun-up! I started a fresh pot of estate-grown Kona, then went out to do a refill. With three feeders, we go through about $100 a week in seed and suet, but it's easily worth it as a way to give back to our many feathered friends.

What many find troubling is the apparently changing mission of the County Library system. It used to be a repository of books which had facilities for use by certain community groups. Arlington and Alexandria libraries still fulfill these functions. In Fairfax though space and resources which used to be devoted to books are increasingly being taken over for other functions. This changeover happened without any serious discussion among county residents.

There may be only a few books and lots of computer stations. Thw libraries will become Grand Central Stations for homeless and people applying for welfare. They may as well install showers and bunk beds 4 tiers high and get it over with.

No, actually you can't. Which is why you're stuck here and why you think that you're something special. I guess it seems like a high bar to you since that's the extent of your reach.

The server doesn't render anything. It errors on the alternate character set when you attempt to post with:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function phorum_ob_clean() in /web/fairfaxunderground/html/phorum/common.php on line 2191

Why would you try to bs about it? If you choose to substitute a dash, that's your choice. If you're going to do one, then do the other. Let your error go and move on.

I lived in Kauai for about a year after I got out of school and have been back many times so I know it well.

They're rental units for tourists. Because you (maybe) stayed there once on vacation doesn't qualify as considering moving there. If it's not where you were intending to live as an alternate choice per the discussion, then why the fuck would you have posted it? Along with your bs about 'having to know people' like it was something exclusive? lol You're so full of shit.

Now if you actually did have any significant money, then you very easily could have both and go there whenever you wanted. As do most of the rest of the owners there who have more money than you. Not that expensive and you'd even have the rental income to help you stretch to meet the cost. Or you could have just posted one of the nicer places there to begin with. But I guess even you realize that's out of your small-ball league.

The only thing that I might feel in your case, if you weren't such a typical pompous dick, is pity. But you are. So I don't. It actually makes me feel satisfied in a way that you've ended up as a bitter old man with nothing but what little you've been able to buy who's down to spending his day trying to impress people on a second-rate local Interweb forum. And that you'll never have anything more than that.

It was the purpose of our visit. We'd been in the islands before both on business and for pleasure. But never to Kauai -- The Garden Isle. A fortnight to have a look-see. Really nice. Finished ahead of everything else we saw, but still behind the green, green grass of home.

Yes, and we will go there again or anywhere else in the world whenever we decide we want to do that. That was never an issue. The question again was over where in the great wide world we wanted to LIVE in retirement.

Many of the owners may have more money than we do. It's not a matter of much interest. As you will never understand, past a point, the how much of it all becomes utterly meaningless. It's not like Scrooge McDuck and Uncle Pennybags would have nothing better to do than sit around wondering whose vault contains more.

Of course. Poor, poor, pitiful me living here in a soft-spot in the lap of contented luxury. What a sad thing -- for those who will never be able to swim in that pool.

Keep telling yourself that. Your delusion of being envied by complete strangers on a tasteless little two-bit local forum like FFXU is all that you've got.

Uh, no. Nothing is sent from your browser to the server here until you hit the "Post message" button. If in the text of a message you include a character from an unsupported character set, then the Phorum software will choke and return the error above.

Among other ways, anyone here can prove this for themselves very simply by copying the word Koloa containing the alternate character from the page here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koloa,_Hawaii or elsewhere into a message and then attempting to post.

Try it now and let us know how that works out.

Maybe you'll get the hang of this new fangled Interweb thingy one day old man.

WTF? In which case it makes absolutely no sense to post a pic of a weekly vacation rental. Dumbshit. lmao!

So in other words you went to Kauai on vacation for two weeks once. Congrats.

It is a great place. Too bad you can't afford it.

I use the libraries all the time, and often donate books there. I recently was at Pohick Library and wanted to buy a paperback book on a rack near the door. When I went to the counter to pay for it, I was directed to a machine that had been installed just for that purpose. How much did those machines cost? I couldn't believe it. The staff members there are busy, but not so busy they couldn't stop what they are doing to take my dollar. I was appalled at the waste of money to put in those machines.

Clay and his sycophants are replacing people with machines as fast as they can. Most of the people you see working in the branches are volunteers. Staff members and volunteers hate the new policies; morale is shot. It's not the place I worked in twenty years ago.

I too, encountered one of those no-doubt multi-thousand dollar machines when I went to pay a .60 fine and I was directed by a person at the checkout desk (who was not helping any patrons) to one of two new machines at the library entrance.

Just how much, I wonder do those damn machines cost?

your taxes are probably going up because the middle class is rich and needs to support the lazy people who can't work but own smart phones and subscribe to cable tv to entertain their 9 children who can't find a nutritious breakfast in the bug infested apt due to lack of cleaning. i saw a bunch of people returning a kid bike after christmas, probably had the kid put it on a wish list so the parent's could credit to buy beer. one kid asked for an American girl doll from a kind hearted naïve christian, surely that was headed to ebay or craigslist.

state of the union address is this week, the middle class is income bracket is a joke and does not account for regional cost of living. does anyone know if law school offers math classes? all those idiots in congress went to law school, none of them have any math sense. middle class is sure to rebel by quitting their jobs to drop below the level of freebie qualification. who doesn't want to stay home, ignore house cleaning, ignore feeding the kids, go to community college part time for free, get free backpacks, free clothes and toys, waived out of every school fee, get free lunch, free language lessons, invite all the other relatives to cross the border to join in on the free fest.

LOL! My work here is long done. Stupid library-haters rebuked. Dumbass BOS-haters rebuked. Goober school-haters rebuked. Know-nothing asshat liars and dipshits reduced to barely intelligible and horribly misinformed babbling and muttering. So it goes.

Meanwhile, the sun was shining once again this morning over the broad expanses of my equity-laden seven-figure estate, meaning that the beautiful grounds were again aglow through the expansive windows -- a vision now of a landscape yearning for the first signs of a new Spring. A fox trotted by as I made my way into the simply stunning kitchen, and since I filled the feeders yesterday, I was as usual serenaded in that soft glow of dawn's still breaking light by the happy sounds of birds flitting and singing around the feeders. I of course started a fresh pot of premium estate-grown Kona, and as that incredible aroma began to waft its way around the room, I had a few moments to reflect on my own good fortune in life as compared to the dingy, low-grade, K-Mart existence that so many of the dopes who post on FFXU are justly consigned to. It pays to be successful in life, my friends. The rewards are both many and satisfying. You'll just have to take my word for that, as there is no path open to you that leads this way.

Taxes are at their lowest levels since the 1950's, part of the reason why they do indeed need to go up. But it won't be the middle class that will pay -- they can't. Contrary to your foolish assertion, they simply don't any longer have the resources necessary to do that, this thanks to the direct and indirect effects of right-wing corporate economics.

They have done a better job in Europe. They have much higher tax rates, but unlike here, the Europeans have been clever enough to assure that the middle class is paid enough to be able to afford to pay the taxes needed to fund their own income support and benefit programs. In this country, it is only the wealthy who can now afford to pay for the programs that the middle class needs, and they of course hire armies of propagandists to convince goobers and stooges that taxing them would be a bad idea. Many morons actually fall for this schlock. It's ridiculous.

The benefits of the above fall to all those empty red-state Republican strongholds. How likely is it that a bill to penalize those folks is going make it through the small-state dominated Senate?

What's a "good" library? One that keeps books on the shelf that haven't been checked out in years? I don't see how that would help anyone. Do you actually have an active library card, by the way?

No. Only those you want to hear.

BTW, only 3 years late now...

D.C. streetcar opening delayed again; no date scheduled

By - Associated Press - Friday, January 16, 2015

WASHINGTON — The District of Columbia’s new streetcar line won’t open next week as the previous mayor had promised.

Former Mayor Vincent Gray announced before he left office that the streetcar would open the week of Jan. 19.

But the new acting director of the District Department of Transportation, Leif Dormsjo, said in a statement Friday that there is no opening date. Federal safety certifications haven’t been completed, and Dormsjo says the department won’t “set arbitrary deadlines” for that process to be finished.

The 2.4-mile streetcar line will be the first working trolley in the nation’s capital in more than 50 years. The project has been beset by delays, and with a price tag of $190 million thus far, some have questioned whether the benefits will outweigh the costs.

And in other news...

Another mishap for the D.C. streetcar system

By Lori Aratani January 8

D.C.’s beleaguered streetcars have taken yet another hit — literally. In the eighth incident since the cars began their test runs last October, a streetcar rear-ended a car Wednesday night.

According to Reggie Sanders, spokesman for the D.C. Department of Transportation, the driver of the car pulled in front of the streetcar and slowed down. The streetcar then rear-ended the car. This follows crash Saturday in which a streetcar also operating in test mode, hit a car.

Right. Being years late, over budget, ridiculously and unnecessarily expensive versus other more practical alternatives, inflexibly tied to a rail, subject to collisions with, taking lanes away from, and other effects of and on traffic, questionable ridership and cost per ride, etc., all is "senseless fluff."

Meanwhile, proponents don't like to talk about anything along those lines. They like to stay in fluffy realm of "reviving corridors," "bringing the community together," "climate change," and other esoterica accessible only by the enlightened which the ignorant masses paying for it are just too fucking stupid to appreciate. Just as you did in your response. lol

Descriptors with no standards. This is how hapless stooges argue. "Liberals" argue for light-rail, therefore you hate it. It's all just "global warming" all over again. You can't fix stupid, but you can sure laugh at it.
