Car wont pass emissions...who can i pay to have it done?
Posted by: Sav ()
Date: April 09, 2009 05:22AM

car will definitely not pass emissions...I have been told the best way to do this is register the car in a different county where emissions is not required but before I do that...I would rather pay somebody to pass it if there is a person that can do that for me.

Anyone can help me?

You know, I bitched in another thread about how sarcastic and mocking people can be on this forum, but I can see why people get so snappy with questions like this..

Why don't you fix your car so we don't have to breathe your fumes? Anyway I'm pretty sure nobody wants to jeopardize their emissions testing license, so take yourself and your stinkbucket car on down to Spotsylvania County or whatever and register it down there.

You gotta know somebody.

I used to....the guy would hook up a good car to the machine and punch your car's shit into the computer. But he sold his garage a long time ago.

Of course, you can't just walk in and wave $$$ at an inspector. If he's honest, he might rat you out.

Like I said, you gotta know somebody that knows somebody....

Do what a friend of mine did several years ago - just register your vehicle as a truck. Your Civic weighs more than 10,000 lbs, right?

That don't work anymore. DMV computer checks the VIN to see if the GVW is over 10,000. I tried it just the other day with a F-250 with a GVW of 8600 lbs and tried to put 10500 on it...they said nope, it ain't capable of that weight, which is true dat.

What are you rambling about?

If it wasn't for "liberal environmentalist" you lungs would sucking in car fumes and living in smogville.

If it was up to me we put all these "conservatives"(Biggest misnomer ever) trash dumping smoke belching non-technology bastards in their own county. Then these conservatives could enjoy acid filled streams, smog, strip mined land and freaks of non-healthcare.

I have never flunked an emissions test.
Make sure your car isw hot,I used to get the test on the way home from work.
I've heard that changing your oil before the test can help.
Check your airfilter, pcv valve. These are easily replaced items.
You didn't say why your car won't pass inspection.Unless its smoking it should be easily fixable.
Auto partz stores used to sell a can of juice which was garanteed to pass your car.

This.

My first emissions test here in 2005 was done on that car treadmill thing. The shitheads doing the test didn't know to turn off traction control so the car wouldn't shut down when the front wheels weren't turning.

Two years after that one, they just hook up the computer and just read that there are no active codes and that there is enough history to trust it. They still charge the same despite having much less work.

They still test the gas cap despite the vehicle already being able to report leaks in the evaporative emissions control systems (the idiot light that comes on if you don't fully tighten your gas cap)

I'm sure that someone can simply put something in their car computer that reports everything as being okay.

The Clean Air Act

2010 marked the 40 th anniversary of Earth Day. Held on April 22, 1970, the
first Earth Day is likely to be seen as one of the major turning points in the
American public’s opinion about the issues facing the environment. However, an
equally prominent event occurred later in the year on December 31 when the Clean Air Act of 1970 was signed into law by President Richard Nixon.

I just want to say that I was told that my breaks were out at the sunoco gas station in saratoga. I had it checked by a mechanic and they were honest enough to tell me that this should have not failed the inspections should have been passed. It is best to contact the State Police and inform them of this matter and make sure your right before you go the inspection inspector was proved wrong and he's not there anymore.

A number of years ago my husband took his El Camino in for inspection. (In the days when you had to get inspections every 6 months) It was rejected for brake pads. Husband being a mechanic replaced them but thought there was plenty of pad left so he saved them. The following month my Camaro needed to be inspected and did need brakes. Just for giggles he put the rejected ones that had come off the El Camino on the Camaro and took it to the same inspector. The inspector passed my car. Just goes to show that it depends on the kind of day an inspector is having on what is going to pass and what is going to get rejected. The inspection process in Virginia is too subjective.

Do you know what is wrong with the car causing it to fail? If the Check Engine Light is on, you just cannot reset the light cause the inspector can see that. If it is failing because of visible smoke or fumes, there are engine and fuel additives that will gaurntee you can pass emissions. You can get those at the auto parts store. a busted fuel cap can cause it to fail, an O2 sensor, so many things. You need to figure out what is wrong first. If your a Check engine light is on, auto parts places can ususally read the code for free. The code might not tell you what is wrong, but can sometimes point you in the right direction.

My car failed emissions, too.

Had an O2 sensor & the EGR valve replaced, and it passed.

Resetting the ECM will also require about 60 miles for all the sensors to adjust so the car can get the emissions test performed. While the goal of passing a test - or paying someone to pass the car might seem logical, it really just hurts the owner of the vehicle. Most likely if the car is mis-firing, then the gas mileage has to be horrible. If it's just $60 for new plug wires, then they will pay for themselves in a few months. If the misfires are caused by the plugs getting fouled with oil due to internal engine problems, then the car is probably on the outs. Don't despair though, as auto parts places sell anti-fouling devices for spark plugs. They are threaded and put some space between your plugs and the cylinder to minimize oil fouling of the plugs. If that's the cause, one could try them at about $8 for 2.

I still think though that if someone's vehicle is not getting the correct gas mileage and there are engine issues, it's wise to resolve them. Getting stranded somewhere in the middle of nowhere or on I-66 in rush hour isn't my idea of fun.

Start with new plugs and a wire set, inspect/replace cap and rotor if your car has a distributer

Resetting Codes can take over 200 miles once you disconnect the battery and replaced the Oxygen or Cat sensors ..never run high octane ,,,87 only , Chevron or Shell with Techron additive ..Rev before test , keep tank fairly full , but never cap it forcing gas into the tank . Try a new distributer cap and rotor , check the number 14 fuse, replace air filter , and gas filter ..last step if OBD codes are not what you want , then take it to the dealer , you may have a lazy switch , dealers usually always know if all else fails. If you can pay a star dude , cool do it , I could not find anyone with balls...

While this might be an apocryphal story, Inspectors certainly do check brakes, and in fact, years ago, inspections in Virginia were twice a year.....asshole

The OP is probably long gone. Depending on what the emissions issue is, there may be things that some shops can do that will get the numbers low enough to pass.

Mike O'Meara Show Fan is clearly a troll looking for a fight. Those of us who owned cars in Virginia in the 1970s remember having to take them in for inspection every six months, as well as the fun of figuring out when your inspection expired when they switched to one year inspections. As for brakes, if you look on the inspection form, it clearly indicates they are an item checked. On mine they even indicate the specific brakes checked. I always ask them to use the tire tool rather than an impact wrench to tighten the lugs back on.

I do not understand the deal with repair shops and brake pads these days. Most pads have wear indicators on them which show when the brakes need to be changed. On a couple of occasions I have had shops or inspectors tell me the pads needed to be replaced, but when I pulled the tires the indicators showed there was plenty of pad left.

Register it in one of the counties outside NOVA that doesn't emissions test it....

OR....

Go to autozone/advance. Get the codes read. Google the codes. Buy whatever parts you need to fix the problem ONLINE, it is ALWAYS cheaper than buying from NAPA or whoever OR if really cheap, use car-part.com to find a junkyard part (but if it's electrical, PLEASE dont waste your time and buy the NEW part ONLINE).

Find a cheap mechanic (look in DC proper or Maryland there are plenty, ask the cabbies) that have a lower labor rate (most shops in Northern VA charge 100+ per hour, I have found shops in DC that only charge 50-60 per hour) and get your work done there. That is, if you don't mind not getting a reciept...or a warranty...but the work will be done and it should pass emissions.

I know because I got a problem quoted to me $1,100 to fix...fixed in Maryland for only $450. 2 years later, the fix is still holding (catalytic converter/some welding) and I JUST passed emissions again- only spending $450- and $200 of it was the part.

You're welcome. Just don't be afraid to go in the hood (hence the cheaper labor rate) and you will be fine. Just don't expect comfy couches, coffee, and wifi in the waiting area (what you are paying for).

But if you're scared- go ahead and go to the NOVA shop full of white people who will charge you for the privledge.

Fuck my spelling I am in a rush gotta go to work now.

You can try to get it registered in a different locality. I know in fredericksburg you dont need emissions and its cheaper.

How some people think they know what they are talking about.

Yes, VA used to have 6 month Safety Inspections, I used to do these before the Emission Testing even came about.

Then I also performed Emission Testing once this was phased in. I was out of it by the time the IM240 and dynos came around, funny how things have changed!

For the misinformed there is now an effort to have "Drive By" Emission Testing. Not sure if it is fully implemented, but there are trucks that can set up on the road with cameras and sensors and the emission levels can be tested as the car drives by.

Most reasons car cannot pass Emission Tests or have the SES/CEL on is more often due to simple things like vacuum leaks rather than bad sensors.

O2 and MAF sensors are needlessly replaced all the time when something much cheaper is usually the primary problem.

Also a "good" car can usually clear Emission Readiness Monitors in 2-3 drive cycles and driving between 10-20 miles on the highway.

My car wont pass emissions because my sensor is bad there is nothing wrong with my car no matter how many times i gake it to a mechanic they say there is nothing wrong with it. You must be retarted or something. Go somewhere with your bad attitude and stop talking shit behind a computer screen.

These days they just hook up to your car's computer and scan for codes. I've gotten a car to pass emissions multiple times by using my scan tool to erase the engine codes, then drive the car for 20-30 miles and then get it inspected before the CEL light comes back on.

If the car is failing because of codes or it has a check engine light on, just drive past the Rapidpass sniffer on the side of the road. You can find the locations here:

Use rapid pass and you will likely pass, if you're still having issues run your gas down to a coulple gallons and add a couple quarts of 90%+ Isopryl and drive drive through the rapid pass multiple times.

My friend put black tape over the "check engine light" and it's passed emissions for the past 10 years. True story.

Put your plates on a different car and run through rapid pass.

Then go online to rapid pass and print the results.

my last inspection the inspector made my car more dangerous

broke a hubcap and then put it on crossthreaded with ONE plastic screw - unseated on the other side by 1/2"

(if it flew off on the highway it would hit a windshield and might cause death)

? in fairfax it's my job to have illegals make my car more dangerous - because they outnumber me, no ?

a few years back an inspector didn't tighten my RF tire well, and months later was making noises - the lugs were all loose. sounded like an under dash noise - luckily i traced it down before it became a problem

it's a pisser because that was already "a weak zone" (held tight by two plastic threads, loose on other two)

i'll have to get a new one - and xxxxx wants likely $100

thanks for the $15 inspection !!
